CSI: New York

CSI fans, pay attention! Nine adjusts Tuesday night programming.

This week, the Top Gear repeat at 9.30pm barely managed to rate better in four cities than Underbelly did in Melbourne only. The low ratings for Top Gear on Nine helped the network to an easy defeat that night, reminiscent of those bad old days in 2009 when Nine were regularly third in ratings on Tuesday nights behind Seven and Ten.

Instead, in all markets except for Victoria, will be the series return of CSI: NY, in NEW episodes. It returns with episode 6 of season 6 called “It happened to Me” at 9.30pm, Tuesday May 10. Following CSI: New York will be the Nine New Special discussing this year’s Federal Budget.

In Victoria, double Underbelly series one plays from 9.30pm, with the Budget News Special at 11.30pm.

Now who wants to place bets on how long CSI: New York will remain in that timeslot? Hopefully some promos over the next five days will alert fans to the New York franchise’s return to Nine. Although I wonder how many of them are no longer interested given its on again – off again programming of late?

CSI: New York, Nine 9.30pm, Tuesday May 10, except for Melbourne.

Massive changes to the schedules of both Nine and GO! have come through overnight. Judging by the time they came through, it was a late night for programming staff at the Nine network last night.

Friday April 29.

Coverage of the Royal Wedding starts at 4pm in eastern states. News and ACA at 6pm and 6.30 respectively, Wedding coverage from 7pm.

In NRL markets, Brisbane Broncos Vs Canterbury Bulldogs airs from 8.30pm, South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Cronulla Sharks at 10.30pm. Wedding continues on GEM. Elsewhere, the Wedding continues on Nine until 11pm.

GEM is Nine’s third channel and the channel that took away Nine’s main channel HD simulcast when it launched September 26, 2010. The announcement for the new channel came two weeks after Seven announced it would launch its third channel 7mate on September 25, right after the 2010 AFL Grand Final.

Unlike ABC News 24 and 7mate, GEM did not move to a different LCN (logical channel number) than the channel it replaced Nine High Def or 9HD, causing some confusion to viewers not familiar with the change.

From the outset, GEM promised viewers a mix of general entertainment and movies “in stunning high definition”. Using Lisa McCune as the face of GEM, the channel was planned to aim more towards a female demographic while still providing sport on high definition in order for Nine to meet their HD sporting commitments.

As the channel went to air, questions were raised about how sport would fit into a female skewed channel and what would happen to being able to see Nine’s main channel content in HD. GEM was to air the Four Nations Rugby League in HD, as well as Nine’s summer of cricket in HD including the Ashes and One Day series but the network back flipped on these HD simulcasts, in favour for GEM’s own unique programming which would supposedly deliver more ratings to the network as a whole than HD simulcasts of sport would.

GEM has been used on occasion to provide sport coverage when the main channel has provided rolling news coverage of major natural disasters and events.

Before GEM went to air, many of Nine’s regular programs were simulcast in HD on Nine’s HD channel. Nine even rebuilt some of their news studios to look better in HD. Regular shows like Two and a Half Men, Top Gear, The Big Bang Theory, The Mentalist, all of the CSI franchise as well as local productions like the various Underbelly series were all able to be seen in HD on Nine High Def or 9HD. During prime time, there was generally more content in HD than there wasn’t.

With the advent of GEM, that is no longer the case. Other than ONE HD, GEM is the only HD multi channel promoted as being a HD channel. While the content of GEM does not appeal to the majority, there are a number of shows on GEM in HD including repeats, encores or simulcasts of content from Nine.

HD programs on GEM include Today 5.30am – 9.00am weekdays, The Closer, Law & Order, The Ellen Degeneres Show at 5pm weekdays, The Mentalist, the Harry’s Law replays on Friday nights as well as the CSI’s on Saturday nights. Most of the movies that GEM play are in HD – even some of the old movies that fill weekend day time timeslots are in HD as such – which of course is possible, using the original film as a source. Gone With the Wind for example – made in 1939 – plays on GEM in HD (next airs Sunday April 10, 3.30pm).

McLeod’s Daughters which airs on weekdays at 3pm is in HD, as is hit sitcom Friends, now airing in double episodes on weekdays at 6pm – having been remastered to both wide screen and HD.

Including Friends, there is 27 hours of HD programming per week on GEM during the prime time hours of 6pm to midnight. That amounts to an average of just under 4 hours per night out of the 6 prime time hours. Saturday night has the most, with movies from 6.30 and three CSI’s after the movie, while the Thursday night line up is devoid of anything HD after 7pm.

During the day, there is a further 6.5 hours of HD content on weekdays and varying amount on weekends, depending on which of the movies are made in HD.

In terms of a free to air source for HD content, GEM exceeds that of ONE HD, but still leaves a lot of the more populous content from Nine’s main channel that the network has available in HD, airing in standard definition only on Nine’s main channel.

Nine say that where ever possible, they source all content in HD. Good news for the future perhaps. Nine even has HD versions available of content that airs on GO! Many of the movies in their library are in HD.

An interesting side point, with the current programming on GO! being made up of mostly movies and Big Bang Theory repeats, if GO! was a HD channel, it would have just as much, if not more content in HD than GEM does.

If providing HD content was the focus here, between GEM and GO, Nine could have a channel that is 100% HD in prime time, leaving all the non-HD stuff for the second standard definition channel.

Next time: 7mate – the channel that occupies Seven’s HD stream.

Note: HD programming details based on the week April 10-16, 2011.

Thursday Jan 20 sees an Australia Day special of Getaway Summer series at 7.30pm, followed by NEW CSI: NY (so we get two in that week). A CSI repeat follows at 9.30.

Thursday Jan 27 features the 2011 return of Getaway at 7.30pm. New CSI: NY follows, then CSI repeat and Cold Case repeat.

Keeping the Two and a Half Men count per week to Nine’s standards, is an extra episode on Friday Jan 28 at 7.30pm. That is followed by Motorway Patrol, then a yet to be named movie.

All information correct at time of posting, but is subject to change.

Nine are set to “burn off” the remaining four episodes of Cops LAC over the next two weeks in two weeks of double episodes.

Next Thursday, November 4, Cops LAC will be a double episode from 9.30pm, the same the following Thursday November 11 – which will be the last two episodes of the show.

Due to low ratings, it is unlikely Cops LAC will be renewed.

The double episodes mean that CSI: New York repeats at 10.30pm will not be seen for those two Thursdays.

Cops LAC on Nine, 9.30 Thursday Nov 4 and Thursday Nov 11. Double episodes.

Undercovers – US Wed Sept 22. Another one part of Nine’s 2010 shows but not known if it will air in 2010 or not. Like many of these Nine acquisitions, whether they are rushed to air or not will depend on how they perform in the US. THIS HAS BEEN AXED – so if Nine keep the rights, expect it on GO or GEM.

V – US Jan 2011. GO plan to fast track – so possibly on air soon after the US date.

Note: I have not yet included new shows where the Australian network the show is likely to air on is not yet known. These I will add as I find out, and hopefully keep up to date.

Some of these titles include: Lone Star, Running Wild, The Cape, Detroit 1-8-7, Better With You, The Defenders, Outsourced (possibly one for Seven), School Pride, Outlaw, and No Ordinary Family.

If you there is something left out that you know about, or have questions about any of the content, please let us know.

Fast tracking score sheet (0-7 days after US air date):

Australian ratings for 2010 ends November 27. Pretty well everything new, fast tracked or semi fast tracked after that date on the main channels will either go into repeats or disappear until 2011. Therefore, all networks revert to having 0 fast track points after that date with the exception of Survivor and Amazing Race, possibly the Event will continue on Seven due to low ratings.

Ten – 0. Comm Games sees Ten lose their fast track points.
GO! – 2. Hellcats and The Vampire Diaries
Seven - 2. The Event and The Amazing Race S17

Semi-fast tracked (between 7 and 30 days after US air date):

Nine 5 – Survivor Nicaragua, CSI, CSI: Miami, Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory. Note Mentalist now outside what I would consider fast tracked. Also Fringe on GO outside of what I consider fast tracked.
Ten 4 – The Good Wife, Glee, House, NCIS – all starting or back in the week after the Comm Games, from Sunday Oct 17. Note – I won’t count new Simpsons, as it looks like the new ep on Friday Oct 15 is a one off, and not regular programming.
Seven 1 – 30 Rock. Criminal Minds misses out as it is more than 30 days after US air date. Bones now gone into repeats from Nov 14 – so no more points there.

Here I’ll define Fast Tracking as airing within 7 days of US date. I’ll have a second category for semi-fast tracked if shows air between 7 days and 1 month of the US air date. Anything beyond a month I would consider not to be fast tracked. The networks may see it differently, but to me, the less than seven days rules is most appropriate as it means we see an episode of a show before the US sees the next one. Whereas, after 7 days, we end up episodes behind, which means it is easy to see spoilers across the internet.

Updated as at Nov 9.

Well, it had to happen one day, didn’t it?

Two and a Half Men is about to hit GO – with double episodes after Big Bang Theory at 8.30 Sunday nights from July 4. This is the first week that Underbelly is not on Nine so Nine’s strategy here could be to build up the Sunday night on GO further to help the network win the night even if the primary channel doesn’t do so well.

This means, that between Channel Nine’s weekday 7pm strip, the recently added (on and off though) 9pm Tuesday night ep, 7.30pm Monday Two and a Half Men episodes, and the two now added to GO, the show is now on NINE times a week! Back to how it was last year, and further dilution of the GO brand into something more like 9TWO.

Meanwhile, Nine and GO’s other hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory is down to three episodes a week on GO and one on Nine with the Sunday night double on GO from 7.40 remaining, an episode at 8.40 Thursday on GO and 8pm on Nine – four times a week.

But wait – there’s more. Top Gear in some markets also runs four times a week. The main episode on Tuesday night on Nine – always promoted as “supersized” or a “Top Gear Special Event” – then two on GO – Sunday night 6.30 and Thursday 7.30. The 4th is Friday night on Nine at 7.30pm, which is not seen in NRL markets due to live NRL coverage.

Three Nine shows on both Nine and GO. Three shows played over and over. Three shows that are rating well enough on both channels to justify their over exposure.

Two more shows airing on both Go and Nine now are CSI and CSI: Miami. CSI: New York currently is on GO only. CSI is not rating that well for either channel.

The five shows played on both GO and Nine occupy a combined total air time of 15 hours per week – and that excludes any last minute changes and encores that cross from Nine to GO like V, Australian Druglords and The Footy Show (AFL) as well as any children’s programming that appear on both channels.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn’t “After the Olympics” mean the time when the Olympics have completely finished – closing ceremony and all?

Nine are using “After the Olympics” to promote a number of shows at the moment. 60 Minutes is being advertised as returning after the Olympics, but, it will actually return on Sunday, February 28 at 7.30pm, after Domestic Blitz at 6.30pm.

Given that the closing ceremony of the Olympics is March 1, our time, the night of Feb 28 is not quite “After the Olympics”. Although, one could argue, that it is close enough given that the majority of the competition is over by then anyway.

That, however, cannot be said about Millionaire Wizz kids – a 2 hour show using the same format as the original “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” with school kids answering the questions in an attempt to win a million dollars for their school. Millionaire Wizz kids will air at 7.30pm, Saturday Feb 27, after Australia’s Funniest Home Videos which airs at 6.30pm Saturdays. It is currently being promoted as “After the Olympics”.

On Monday, March 1, Nine will play the closing ceremony of the winter Olympics live during the day, and replay it at night at 10.30pm. At 9.30pm, Monday March 1 on Nine is a new episode of CSI: Miami.

Definitely after the Olympics: Tuesday March 2 at 9.30 at this stage is “TBA”. It is the most likely timeslot for Survivor: Heroes and Villains.

Tuesday March 2, 7.30pm is a new ep of Top Gear. At 8.30, is a previously aired ep.

Wednesday March 3, sees new Cold Case at 9.30 and new Without a Trace at 10.30pm. Thursday March 4 at 9.30 will be a Mentalist repeat, following Adults Only 20-1 (why is it still on?) at 8.30pm. 10.30 maybe CSI: NY, but not sure on that one yet.

UPDATED: The TBA for Sunday Feb 28, 8.30pm is the telemovie “Wicked Love” – the story of Maria Korp, played by Rebecca Gibney.

10:30pm – Thursday, January 28 on Channel Nine

When a marine is found dead in Central Park, Mac uses his military wits to solve the crime. Across town, the team investigates the death of a woman found in a burned out car.
