There are a number of shows premiering in the US in what they call “mid-season” – that is, from January 2012 onwards. Shows listed include the US network they will air on, and only a few are known to be airing here in Australia at some stage – Australian network indicated where possible.
Many of these shows may never make it here – all depends on how they perform in the US.
Fashion Star, NBC
Premieres: Tuesday, Mar. 13, 9:00 p.m. ET
Elle Macpherson hosts the reality-competition show where 14 aspiring fashion designers compete for a multi-million dollar prize: to launch their collection at Macy’s, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue. Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos serve as mentors
Scandal, ABC
Premieres: TBD, Expected late-Feb./early-March
The series stars Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope, former media relations consultant to the President. After leaving the White House, she opened her own firm, hoping to start a new career and personal life
GCB, ABC – will air here on Seven
Premieres: Sunday, March 4, 10:00 p.m. ET
Amanda Vaughn (Leslie Bibb), former “Queen Bitch” in high school, a recently divorced single mother of two children who returns to Dallas where she grew up. She meets her former school friends, who she used to mock: Carlene (Kristin Chenoweth), Sharon (Jennifer Aspen), Heather (Marisol Nichols) and Cricket (Miriam Shor). She and her children live with her fifty something mother Gigi (Annie Potts), who still acts like a twenty something.
Touch, Fox
Premieres: Monday, March 10, 9:00 p.m. ET (Preview episode Jan. 25)
Kiefer Sutherland stars as a single father whose mute, 11-year-old son communicates through numbers. Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Undercovers) and Danny Glover co-star in the drama from Heroes creator Tim Kring. As Glover explained to Sutherland in a preview: “Your son sees everything in the past, the present, the future. He sees how it’s all connected.”
Missing, ABC
Premieres: Thursday, March 15, 8:00 p.m. ET
A retired CIA agent, Rebecca (Ashley Judd), takes it upon herself to find her missing son (Nick Eversman) who disappeared while on a summer internship in Italy. And she’ll use every means necessary to get him back.
The River, ABC
Premieres: Tuesday, Feb. 7, 9:00 p.m. ET
A found footage thriller from — who else? — Paranormal Activity creator Oren Peli, documents a small crew’s ill-fated search down the Amazon for a missing nature explorer.
Smash, NBC – will air here on W from Mid Feb (Pay TV)
Premieres: Monday, Feb. 6, 10 p.m.
Former American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee leads an ensemble cast, including Debra Messing, Megan Hilty, Jack Davenport and Anjelica Huston, in the story of making a Broadway play about Marilyn Monroe. The show, which counts Steven Spielberg among its executive producers, will feature both original songs and popular covers, and has already landed cameos with Nick Jonas, Bernadette Peters and Uma Thurman.
Luck, HBO
Premieres: Sunday, Jan. 29, 10:00 p.m. ET
From Deadwood creator David Milch, Luck delves into the world of horse racing and showcases the various industry players, including the owners, gamblers and jockeys. The drama stars Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte and Gary Stevens, with Michael Mann and Carolyn Strauss joining Milch as executive producers.
Alcatraz, Fox – will air here on Nine – possibly very soon, given the level of promos.
Premieres: Monday, Jan. 16, 8:00 p.m. ET
Lost gurus J.J. Abrams and Elizabeth Sarnoff hope for success on another island with this supernatural mystery about Alcatraz prisoners returning modern day San Francisco after disappearing when the notorious prison closed. Sarah Jones, Jorge Garcia and Sam Neill headline the ensemble trying to figure out (or cover up) what’s really happening.
Napoleon Dynamite, Fox
Premieres: Sunday, Jan. 15, 8:30 p.m. ET
Nearly 7 years after the indie comedy about an awkward youth with unparalleled fighting skills hit theaters, Napoleon Dynamite is now a cartoon series. Original stars Jon Heder, Tina Majorino, Aaron Ruell and Sandy Martin among those lending their voices to their old roles, now forever preserved in high school.
Finder, Fox – should air on Ten here
Premieres: Thursday, Jan. 12, 8:00 p.m. ET
A loose spin-off of veteran procedural Bones, creator Hart Hanson takes a more whimsical approach to crime-solving with this series about an eccentric war vet who can find anything. Starring Geoff Stults as sleuthing Walter Sherman, Michael Clarke Duncan joins as his right-hand man and legal representation.
Rob, CBS
Premieres: Thursday, Jan. 12, 8:30 p.m. ET
Rob Schneider stars (and created) this comedy series about a bachelor who has just married into a thight-knit Mexican-American family.
Are You There, Chelsea?, NBC – will air here on Arena
Premieres: Jan. 11, 8:30 p.m. ET
Based on Chelsea Handler’s best selling books, the half-hour comedy stars Laura Prepon as a young semi-autobiographical Handler. Jack McDorman (Greek), Ali Wong (Breaking In) and Mark Povinelli (Water for Elephants) star as Handler’s co-workers at a local sports bar, while Lenny Clarke (Rescue Me) portrayers her father. Handler herself will recur as her real life born-again Christian sister, Sloane.
The Firm, NBC
Premieres: Sunday, Jan. 8, 9:00 p.m. ET
Based on John Grisham’s best-selling 1991 novel, the dramedy stars Josh Lucas as the young associate who brought down his prestigious Memphis law firm 10 years earlier. Juliette Lewis, Tricia Heifer and Natasha Calis also star.
House of Lies, Showtime
Premieres: Sunday, Jan. 8 at 10:00 p.m. ET
Starring Don Cheadle as Marty, a successful and cutthroat consultant who stops at nothing to get his way, House of Lies stands as one of the cable network’s first series orders under new entertainment topper David Nevins. Kristen Bell and Parks and Recreation’s Ben Schwartz co-star.
Work It, ABC
Premieres: Tuesday, Jan. 3, 8:30 p.m. ET
