ABC TV today announced it will broadcast two of the Matilda’s toughest football games – against FIFA Women’s World Cup Winners, Japan, and South Korea, – in a 2012 London Olympic Games qualifying tournament in China.
ABC TV will broadcast Australia’s clash with Japan on Monday, September 5th at 11.35pm on ABC1, and the Matildas match against Korea Republic on Monday, September 12th at 11.35pm on ABC1.
ABC TV Sport’s Stephanie Brantz will host the broadcast with match commentary from Peter Wilkins and special comments and analysis by former Matilda, Alicia Ferguson.
The two top teams from the gruelling six team, 11 day round robin tournament will progress to the 2012 London Olympic Games next July.
Australia have reached their highest ever World Ranking in football and capped off an exciting 14 months which included a second quarter final appearance in consecutive World Cups and winning the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in May last year.
Japan’s incredible performance in winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 brought them much closer to the coveted number one spot currently held by the USA with further change to be greatly affected by the 2012 London Olympics and preceding qualifiers.
Korea Republic (South Korea) are currently 16th in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings.
Australia’s road to the Olympics begins when the Matildas play AFC Women’s Asian Cup runners-up DPR Korea (North Korea) in their opening match on September 1 at the Jinan Olympic Sports Centre – the first time the players have played a competitive match since the team’s quarter final exit from the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany last month.
Matildas head coach Tom Sermanni has selected a talented 20-player squad more than capable of competing for a place at the 2012 London Olympic Games with their extensive experience and knowledge of playing big matches in Asia.
