Mel departs Packed to the Rafters in crash

On an emotional episode of Packed to the Rafters last night, Zoe Ventoura’s character Mel was killed in a car crash on her way to meet on-screen husband Ben. The event signals the end of Ventoura’s stint on the popular Seven show, having decided to leave the series to pursue career opportunities in Los Angeles.

Top Gear host describes the show as a “sitcom”

Top Gear host James May has described the show as a sitcom nowadays as opposed to the motoring show it once was. May expressed his frustration that him and his co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond have to play “characters” on the BBC and that often the trio’s technical expertise is sacrificed in favour of comedic setups and challenges.

Love Hewitt plans TV return

Jennifer Love Hewitt is lining up plans to return to TV following the cancellation of The Ghost Whisperer. The actress is planning to develop a half-hour comedy titled Bad Taste in Men along with a romantic comedy project. 

Vosloo joins Bones

The Mummy and 24 actor Arnold Vosloo is joining crime series Bones for a recurring role in the show’s next season. The actor, whoplayed terrorist Habib Marwan in the fourth season of 24, will play a villain on Bones.

MTV forced to apologise for Jersey Shore scene 

MTV has had to apologise to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation following a scene on a Jersey Shore special. One of the male cast members was filmed flirting with a nightclub patron who his friends described as a “tranny”.  GLAAD described the segment as “one of the most blatantly transphobic scenes aired anywhere on television in the last few years.”

Big Bang’s Penny written out temporarily

The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco, who plays Penny, has been temporarily written out of the show due to a broken leg she suffered outside of work. The writers of the comedy series will rewrite at least one episode while Cuoco recovers enough to return work.

Avatar actor possibly heading to Terra Nova

Avatar’s Stephen Lang is reportedly in talks to appear in the new Steven Spielberg series Terra Nova, which shoots in Australia. Lang was initially pursued for the role but had to pass due to his workload, but is available now since the airing of Terra Nova was pushed back until 2011.

Jennifer Love Hewitt for Castle?

Jennifer Love Hewitt has been linked to a role in Castle, with the show’s executive producer saying the part has already been written for her.

Lopez signs Idol deal

Jennifer Lopez has reportedly inked a one-year deal to sit at the judges table on the next season of American Idol. The singer, whose previous attempt to seal a deal failed last month, has secured $12m for the gig.

Coming up in September, Arena premieres the very latest seasons of hit series Project Runway and Top Chef, returning favourites Ellen and Celebrity Rehab with Dr Drew, the second season of Models of the Runway as well as two new Arena-exclusive series from Bravo, Launch My Line and 9 By Design.

Project Runway, hosted by supermodel and fashion maven, Heidi Klum, gets back to its roots in New York city when it premieres September 13, Mondays at 8.30pm.

Season 7 sees judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia return to weigh in on the best and worst on the runway. Under the watchful eye of mentor, Tim Gunn, budding fashion designers compete for the opportunity to launch their careers in fashion.

Models of the Runway, hosted by Heidi Klum, returns for its second season on September 13, Mondays at 9.30pm. An exciting companion series to Project Runway, Models of the Runway gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at the reality competition from the models’ perspective.

When Top Chef season 7 premieres on September 12, Sundays at 7.30pm, 17 new contestants come to Washington D.C. for the ultimate power play to determine who has the chops to become ‘Top Chef’.

Padma Lakshmi returns as host, and is joined at the judges’ table by Tom Colocchio and Gail Simmons. Award winning chef Eric Ripert joins as a regular guest judge.

Capturing the varied tastes of the US capital, Top Chef: Washington D.C. features appearances by some of the town’s top names including; Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and White House chef Sam Kass.

Emmy Award-winner Ellen DeGeneres returns on September 7, with the eighth season of her hit talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Australian television premiere episodes will air weekdays at 11.00am.

Dr Drew Pinsky puts celebrities Dennis Rodman, Heidi Fleiss, Joey Kovar, Kari Anne Peniche, Lisa D’Amato, Mackenzie Phillips, Mike Starr, Mindy McCready and Tom Sizemore through an intensive 21-day detox and treatment program in Los Angeles, when Celebrity Rehab with Dr Drew returns for a third season September 16, Thursdays at 9.30pm.

All-new to Arena is Launch My Line where celebrities will design, cut and stitch their way through a one-of-a-kind creative competition to determine who has the vision to go from icon to fashion star and launch a trendsetting clothing label.

Premiering September 8, Wednesdays at 8.30pm, the celebrity contestants will each be paired with a fashion expert, who will supply the technical know-how to implement the celebrity’s creative vision.

Another Arena premiere on September 14, Tuesdays at 9.30pm, is 9 By Design. The series follows husband and wife design team, Bob and Cortney Novogratz and their seven children. Owners of New York based design firm, Sixx Design, this young, hip and artsy couple have developed and designed unique properties in Manhattan, rebuilt entire blocks in the city, and turned funky into fabulous with taste and confidence.

Viewer favourite Ghost Whisperer also joins Arena’s weekday afternoon line-up, starting with the very first episode on September 13 at 5.00pm. Newlywed Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) discovers her unique ability to communicate with the earthbound spirits of people who have died and need her help.
