Housos

It’s pretty rare that a feature length movie for theatrical release is spawned from a single series of a television series but that’s exactly what the Australian comedy series Housos has done.

Housos vs. Authority is based upon the stories and characters of the Housos television series, created by Paul Fenech. After taking over half a million dollars when it opened in cinemas on the first of November 2012, Housos vs Authority is now out on Blu ray and DVD.

In the movie, Franky (Fenech) and his best mate Dazza (Jason Davis) travel in a drug-laden campervan from the western outskirts of Sydney to Uluru so that Dazza’s foul-mouthed girlfriend Shazza (Elle Dawe) can be reunited with the dying mother she hasn’t seen since she was three.  You can imagine the drama and comedic value throughout their journey!

In case you haven’t seen Housos, the series is a satirical parody of low income Australian residents of fictional suburb Sunnyvale, who are living in Housing Commission public housing.

A second season of Housos has been announced by SBS which will return to air in 2013.

A petition boasting thousands of signatures is doing the rounds asking for SBS to abandon its upcoming comedy project Housos.

The Paul Fenech-created series is still in the post production stage but already there has been criticism of the way the series will depict housing commission residents.

Residents of a Department of Housing block in western Sydney have launched the petition which calls for SBS to pull the plug.

‘I think it’s a poor show by SBS to single out a group of decent people for derision,” Mount Druitt MP Richard Amery said. ”What are we going to have next, a program making fun of people with disabilities or a show aimed at cultural backgrounds? It may be tongue-in-cheek but for the 5000-odd people in Department of Housing homes in Mount Druitt, it’s offensive.”
