How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother is set to return to our screens on the week commencing October 23rd.

In a suprisingly sad and moving episode, we see the on and off relationship between Barney and Robin take an unxpected turn. It is heartfelt and heartbreaking.

But as usual it is Jason Segal’s portrayal of Marshall that provides the laughs – and yes there are many in this first episode of season 7.

How I Met Your Mother will air on Seven. More details coming soon.

Katie Holmes (Mrs. Tom Cruise) has landed a pivotal role on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother.

According to Vulture, the actress has been cast as the mysterious Slutty Pumpkin, a character first referred to during the show’s freshman season (she was the one that got away from Ted at a Halloween party).

“Katie is a lovely and talented actress, which is why we’ve saved for her perhaps the most classily named character in our show’s history,” exec producer Craig Thomas joked to Vulture of the part, which he noted was “literally six seasons in the making.”

Holmes’ last TV series gig was a recurring role on ABC’s late legal drama Eli Stone.

Ashton Kutcher is a success. The season premiere of the new look Two and a Half Men on Monday night, in the USA,  drew a series-high 27.7 million total viewers, almost doubling the audience of the sitcom’s year-ago opener.

The much-anticipated outing also scored massivly in the coveted 18-49 demo, more than doubling its tally there from the 2010 premiere.

What’s more, Men‘s mighty return represents ths most-watched season premiere for any scripted show since Desperate Housewives circa 2005.

All told, CBS’ sitcom line-up had much to smile about. A double helping of How I Met Your Mother delivered 11.7 million viewers, up some 34 percent from a year ago and both all-time highs, while 2 Broke Girls cashed in on their one-time lead-in by premiering to 19.2 mil — up 57 and 79 percent from Mike & Molly‘s series debut. (CBS notes that 2 Broke Girls marks TV’s most-watched comedy premiere since 2001′s Inside Schwartz.)

The night’s other big gainer was ABC’s Castle, which with 13.6 million viewers. Elsewhere in the 10 o’clock slot, Hawaii Five-0 returned to 12 million viewers (shedding half of its lead-in and down 10 percent from its 2010 debut, but besting Castle in the demo), while NBC’s The Playboy Club (5 mil) only drew two-thirds of the numbers Chase chased a year ago – which we never even got!

And lastly, in the reality-TV realm: The Dancing With the Stars premiere (18.6 mil) dropped 12 percent from last fall’s opener, while NBC’s The Sing-Off didn’t even manage Chuck numbers, mustering just 5.2 million viewers.

Two And A HAlf Men is on Tuesdays, 8.30 on Nine, 2 Broke Girls will air on Nine, Hawaii Five – O will air next Wednesday at 8.30 on Ten, How I met your Mother will air on Seven and Castle will air on Seven. Pan AM on Nine!

Now how is this for a “What to watch on TV Tonight” post? The first night of US ratings for 2011/2012

Here is how it was summed up by tvline.com, with Australian times inserted where appropriate.

8pm Dancing With the Stars (ABC) | Season 13 kicks off with 12 new (varying degrees of) celebrities taking to the parquet. TVLine readers ranked the contenders, from “Thanks for stopping by!” to “Start thinking about where you’ll keep that ghastly trophy.” Seven will air Australian version mid-year. We won’t see the American version as Seven have a strict policy of not airing internationaly versions of these shows. Why not let Foxtel do them?

8 pm The Sing-Off (NBC) | Like DWTS, this reality competition will also run two hours every Monday night on US TV. Nick Lachey will once again serve as host, while this year’s panel of judges will be populated by Sara Bareilles, Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman. Check out the 16 groups in contention. Doubt we will see this in Oz. Maybe on Pay Tv?

8 pm How I Met Your Mother (CBS) | The new season launches with back-to-back episodes featuring a funky wedding and a sexy dance number (watch video). Get caught up on TVLine’s legendary amounts of scoop. Seven will hopefully fast track, right?

8 pm Hell’s Kitchen (Fox) | To make room for all of the fall debuts, some shows have to go bye-bye — as this cooking thing does with its two-hour Season 9 finale. Nine or GEM for us?

8 pm Eureka (Syfy) | The penultimate season’s finale features the Astraeus mission launch and the arrival of a new out-of-this-world threat to this Northwest burg. Our Sci-Fi channel soon.

9 pm Two and a Half Men (CBS) | Sheen out, Kutcher in — this we knew. But tonight, see how the swap happens. (Let’s just hope it doesn’t disrupt the show’s complex mythology too much.). Iar on Nine hours later, Tue Spet 20, 8.30pm

9:30 pm 2 Broke Girls (CBS) | This well-reviewed new sitcom, starring Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, is getting a very special premiere here, leading out of Men. (It will normally air Mondays at 8:30.) Read my First Impression preview. Nine will air at some stage…

10 pm Castle (ABC) | The season of “explosive” secrets begins now. In case you missed it over the weekend, here’s a piece I did with that jokester Nathan Fillion; check TVLine after the premiere’s West Coast airing for a special something to help lift your jaw off the floor. Seven willl air at some stage – no clue as to whether they will fast track or not.

10 pm Hawaii Five-0 (CBS) | McGarrett’s in jail, but have no fear: John Locke (aka new cast member Terry O’Quinn) may hold the key to his freedom, as Steve’s Navy SEAL mentor. Watch the trailer here. Airs on Ten, Wed Sept 27, 9.30pm. New night, new time. Sundays 8.30 will be Terra Nova. Ten are notorious for moving shows into different tiemlsots!

10 pm The Playboy Club (NBC) | Since offering my First Impression of this ’60s-set series, the pilot’s undergone some changes — largely for the better, I’d say, though I do miss the original, “Ewwww” version of the opening death scene. One thing that hasn’t changed: Tony winner Laura Benanti, as “mother bunny” Carol-Lynne, owns every damn scene she is in. Will air on Pay TV in Australia, but not for a few weeks or longer so they can promote it.

10 pm Roast of Charlie Sheen (Comedy Central) | Because not one joke has been made about the guy in the preceding eight months, right? Channel Nine – Tuesday Sept 20, 9.30pm, after The Joy Of Sets, which airs at 9pm after new Two and a alf Men at 9pm on Nine.

10 pm Fashion Police: The Primetime Emmy Awards (E!) | As long as Nina Dobrev is crowned Best Dressed, it’s all good.

Coming up on Tuesday: NCIS (which we will see on Ten Tue Sept 27, 8.30pm), Glee (which we will see on Ten Wed Sept 21 8.30pm – noy long to go now!), The Biggest Loser…. (next year for us in Australia), NCIS: Los Angeles (after NCIS on TEN), New Girl (Fox) (Australia? No idea at this stage!!!), Raising Hope…(Ten / ELEVEN when? We don’t know yet!). Body of Proof (Seven envetually) and Unforgettable (CBS) (which will air on Nine soon).

Looking at Seven’s advanced TV Guide for the week of September 18-24 and it’s TBA’s for 7.30pm Monday to Thursday.

On Monday September 19, there is a two hour TBA from 7.30pm which will almost certainly be the first X Factor Australia live show where the top contestants perform for our votes.

That will be followed by a Castle repeat at 9.30pm, then Suits at 10.30pm, and the first seaosn finale of Teen Wolf at 11.30pm.

On Tuesday September 20, my guess is 7.30 will be the X Factor result show. Packed to the Rafters is at 8.30, then Dinner Date at 9.30, followed by Hung and Parks and Recreation at 10.30 and 11.10 respectively.

Wednesday September 21, the 7.30 TBA is most likely to be World’s Strictest Parents. Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour airs at 8.30pm, Law & Order: LA at 9.30 and Great Escapes at 10.30.

Thursday September 22 sees a 90 minute TBA from 8.30 – 10.00pm. This will almost certainly be the 90 minute premiere of Beauty and the Geek Australia season 3.

Back an hour – the 7.30 TBA on Thursday September 22 could well be NEW How I Met Your Mother as it premieres in the US Sept 19. If Seven fast track Mother, that will give them a fast track point, in line with Nine (Two and a Half Men) and Ten (Glee) for the week.

Law & Order: LA also airs from 10pm that night.

To Friday night, and it is the last Friday night AFL for the year, the week before the Grand Final (which will air on Ten this year). Most likley to be aired live in AFL markets. In Sydney, live if the Swans make it that far.

As soon as we have defnite confirmation of the TBA’s, we will advise!

How I Met Your Mother season 7 should air on Seven later this year.

Wow! Here is a sneek peek at next seasons How I Met Your Mother.

When we left off, season 6 ended with a flash forward to Barney’s wedding and there was a great deal of uncertainty as to the identity of the bride. Robin apparently toys with coming clean about her renewed affections for her ex in the season premiere, but given Season 7′s apparent status as Robin-heavy, we’re thinking she’ll probably hesitate over those feelings for a little longer.

Now we see Barney Stinson and Robin Sherbatsky looking intimate at the wedding of Punchy, Ted’s mate from Cleveland. As for knowing who Barney will marry, all the exec producer says is “We’re going to keep revealing little details about this wedding as we build toward it, within the chronological story of the show.”

HIMYM will be back on our screens on Channel Seven either later this year or in 2012.

Seven have made a number of changes to their line up for next week.

The TBA on Monday August 22 at 7.30pm is a double episode of Border Security. Late night Monday sees a double How I Met Your Mother from 10.30pm, with Teen Wolf starting at 11.30pm.

Packed to the Rafters will return to Seven August 23, at 8.30pm, not August 30th as predicted. As a result, the season finale of Winners & Losers will air after Packed to the Rafters at 9.30pm. Dinner Date will not be seen that night.

Seven will also be replaying the six episodes that aired earlier this year, with three on Monday August 22 at midday, and the next three on Tuesday also at midday.

Onto Wednesday, and World’s Strictest Parents airs over a 90 minute special, finishing at 9pm. Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour and Covert Affairs move back half an hour to compensate. Covert Affairs is supposedly a double episode, but only goes for 90 minutes, while Detroit 1-8-7 at 11.30pm is half an hour only.

The week commencing August 28 is filled with TBA’s at 7.30pm Monday through to Thursday, suggesting that The X Factor will premiere at 7.30pm Monday August 29 with a 90 minute episode.

Dinner Date Australia returns on Tuesday night August 30, after Packed to the Rafters, while Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior will be a double episode on Wednesday August 31.

Seven will confirm timelsots for The X Factor probably as the date draws closer.

Seven have also started airing promos for Wild Boys, which suggests that show is set to air soon as well. As it is already known that Wild Boys will air on Sunday night, could Wild Boys premiere on Sunday September 4?

Some tweaking to 7mate programming from next week.

From next Tuesday, August 9, the double How I Met Your Mother that usually airs at 7.30pm moves to 8.30pm Thursday, swapping timeslots with Mythbusters which now moves to 7.30 Tuesdays.

On Sunday August 14, the Sunday night movie has change to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl, instead of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

On Monday August 15, No Ordinary Family will screen as a double episode with the 8.30 episode of Family Guy and the 9pm episode of American Dad out.

Finally, Fridays get a work over from August 19, with double How I Met Your Mother from 7.30pm, Family Guy at 8.30pm and American Dad at 9.00pm. These shows replace current programming of Pimp My Ride and My Name is Earl.

And what happened to the Friday night AFL on 7mate in regional NSW and QLD? Seems to no longer be airing – for those with access to 7mate in those areas, live Friday night AFL was often a good option.

How I Met Your Mother
Kal Penn, from House is set to join the cast of How I Met Your Mother this season as a love intrest for Robin. Penn left House to work in the Obama administration as an associate director in public liason. Penn’s arrival of course reunites him with Neil Patrick Harris, who played, well, “Neil Patrick Harris” to his Kumar in the Harold & Kumar films.
HIMYM exec producer Craig Thomas strongly hinted to TVLine in May that Robin would jump back into the dating scene, especially now that her maybe-soul mate Barney had moved on with Nora: “Robin didn’t do a hell of a lot of dating at all [last season]; she was more [immersed in] switching careers,” he said. “Now, Robin, who’s single and is looking forward a little bit, can’t help but wonder if what happened between her and Barney could have been something more had they been more ready.”
Barney growing up a bit via Nora “has not gone unnoticed by Robin, who did not have a serious love interest this past year. She’s definitely going to have to wrestle with that at the start of Season 7.”

Teen Wolf
Teen Wolf has been picked up for a second season by MTV in the United States. Airing here on Channel Seven at 10.30pm on Mondays – it has not had the same success here as it has there, even though reviews were posotive for the show that was a mild spin-off of the 1980′s film. Maybe a move to digital would be better for the teen targeted show.

Being Human
Being Human that debuted on Eleven earlier this month has also been picked up for a second season. It airs Mondays at 9.30pm.

House
In other House news, Aussie Jesse Spencer has signed on for Season 8 of the medical drama. The producers were apparently desperate to keep him after the departure of Lisa Edelstein who is heading to “The Good Wife”.

Grey’s Anatomy
Even if Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey decide to leave the show at the end of this season, creator Shondra Rhimes says the show will still go on. “Just for the record: This is not the last season of [Grey's Anatomy],” Rhimes avowed on Twitter Wednesday, in response to a handful of followers suggesting it was. To underscore her resolve, she added: “Definitely. Not.” She later added that she hopes that Pompeo and Dempsey will stay on and that no new cast members will be added this season.

Castle
Penny Johnson Jerald, known as the wife of President Palmers wife on 24 (One, Mondays at 8.30pm) is to join the set of Castle as Captain Victoria Gates. Gates will be a no nonsense Internal Affairs investigator who clashes with Castle. Jerald replaces Ruben Santiago-Hudson, who played Captain Roy Montgomery. astle airs on Seven on Sundays.
