Junior MasterChef Australia

The full list of 2011 Reality Television Stars is now out- but there are a few notable exceptions. Some of those who didn’t make the list do deserve a mention, and here are those mentions right now!

EMMA DUNCAN (The Biggest Loser)

Second female winner of The Biggest Loser, which is saying something after being allowed back into the competition soon after being eliminated. She came from the very strong Duncan Family, who were trained by newcomer Tiffiny Hall. Her magnificent feat definitely needs some recognition.

SARAH MOON (The Biggest Loser)

Another Biggest Loser finalist, and this fiesty nutter kept giving us excuse after excuse to watch the show! Her continued outbursts of rage aimed at the Commando’s training regime, as regrettable to say, brought tears of laughter to our eyes while at the same time made us feel for her and what she must have been going through. She never gave up though, earning a cool fourth place in the competition.

JOE CHALLENOR (The Biggest Loser)

The villain of the season, Joe was most famous for putting his nephew Nathaniel up for elimination in his place and depriving his brother Damien of a much needed immunity opportunity. He was able to stun viewers though, with his stunning transformation and hard work.

JOSH DENSTEN & JENNA WHITEHEAD (The Block)

This bickering couple were probably the most outspoken couple on this year’s season. Having the only double fronted home, it seemed the unique position they were in lended them a hand as the couple went on to controversially win a good handful of challenges and money! Their most infamous moments included the finale proposal by Josh and Josh’s clashes with site manager Keith.

KATRINA CHAMBERS & AMIE GODDE (The Block)

These pair of sisters were something else on The Block. The third most successful couple on this years season, there was a lot these girls did for the audience- most of it revovled around laughter. Whether it was admitting themselves into self-created Women’s Clubs or singing along to Dynamite, these girls were just so entertaining. When they were down, the nation was down in the dumps with them.

TANIA & ROD WALSH (The Block)

Tania & Rod were the strong couple of The Block this year- both professionally and mentally. Having to deal with a recent death in the family, it wasn’t easy for these two to keep a brave face and renovate to their professional standards at the same time, but somehow they managed it and the nation was happy for it.

MO EL-LEISSY & MOS HAROUN (The Amazing Race Australia)

Mo & Mos were this year’s stereotype breaker. As two Muslims, it was hard to find them in a situation that didn’t challenge your beliefs on the religion. These fun loving, dopey characters proved to be continuous comic relief from the serious challenges and it was equally as sad to see them leave the contest half way through.

ANNE-MARIE BROWN & TRACY READ (The Amazing Race Australia)

The Big W ladies from WA were the first notable characters of the game in my opinion and had they stayed in the game for just a little while longer they may have made the list, but like Mo & Mos, their thirst for fun never parched and they continued to deliver strong comedic moments of television right up to their elimination early on.

DAVE & KELLY MILLER (The Amazing Race Australia)

These bikies were never short of laughs either, but at the same time, they were some of the biggest competitors the game had. When Dave wasn’t going off at an ice- Hockey Player who blocked all his shots, they were out to seek revenge from those who underestimated these two bikies!

JOEY TOUTOUNJI (The Amazing Race Australia)

Less her partner, Richard, Joey was the true villain of the series. Having betrayed former allies Mel & Alana, her ‘Focus, Believe, Achieve’ quote was one of the most annoying cliches of 2011. Good riddance to this one I say.

TIMOMATIC (Australia’s Got Talent)

Timomatic came 21st on my list in the end due to his incredible talent and the chills he sent up my spine when I saw him perform. He has since gone on to perform nationwide and is recieving a lot more notabilty after his stint on the show.

COSENTINO (Australia’s Got Talent)

For his death-defying stunts and his calm and collected nature. YouTube him. ‘Nuff said.

BENCHMARK (Australia’s Got Talent)

Another close call, but these group of oldies had it all- voice, charisma and inspiration. Despite their hardship, these guys taught Australia that anything is possible. It’s a shame they didn’t win the show in my opinion.

BEN PRICE (Australia’s Got Talent)

His funny impersonations will forever be stuck in my head, the head of Dannii and no doubt your head. If only I heard him on radio a little bit more, I may have moved him up and into the list of faves.

ROBERT DAVIDOV (Top Design)

Special mention for winning Top Design. Probably the show’s only winner.

GRETA YAXLEY (Junior MasterChef)

Special mention for winning Junior MasterChef Australia.

SAMMY & BELLA JAKUBIAK (My Kitchen Rules)

Special mention for winning My Kitchen Rules.

TROY THOMPSON & MACKENZIE GOGO-SMITS (Beauty & The Geek Australia)

Special mention for their engagement. Are they married yet?

SARAH LAWTHER & LACHLAN COSGROVE (Beauty & The Geek Australia)

Special mention for winning Beauty & The Geek Australia)

Special mentions also go out to those who are still notable for their work on reality television this year but their disclusion from my list was not terribly regrettable:

CHRISTINA PARIE (X Factor), JOHNNY RUFFO (X Factor), PAMELA COOKE (X Factor) ANDREW WISHART (X Factor), DECLAN SYKES (X Factor), CHRISTIE BLIZZARD (Renovators), NATALIE BROADHEAD (Renovators), AUGUST SMITS (Renovators), DANI VENN (MasterChef Australia), JOHN HUGHES (MasterChef Australia), ELLIE PAXTON-HALL (MasterChef Australia), TEAM ROCKET (Australia’s Got Talent), NATHANIEL CHALLENOR (Biggest Loser), MATT NUNN & TOM WARRINER (Amazin Race Australia), FARMER KEV (Farmer Wants A Wife) & HALEY BRACKEN (Dancing with the Stars)

Can’t list everyone, but there’s the who’s who of reality television 2011. All that there is to do today is to announce the 2011 Personality of the Year. That announcement will be up shortly.

Last night; reality television bowed its head for 2011 with a lovely finale for Beauty & The Geek Australia. In a blog post; I went through the key aspects that went into making the final week of reality for this year a success while also hinting at future prospects for this blog. In the final recapping blog I will be posting for this year, I will detail the year that has been; the highs and the lows. Pretend it is one of those lengthy recaps shows attach to the top of their finales. Then I will preview what is in store for the coming months and into 2012.

The year began on 30 January 2011 with the launch of The Biggest Loser Australia’s sixth season- the first in the ‘families’ format. The season began with four trainers; Shannon Ponton, Michelle Bridges, Steve Willis (formerly ‘The Commando’, now a fully fledged trainer) and new ninja warrior Tiffiny Hall, all heading to the homes of their respective families to eat what they eat, do what they do and most importantly, live how they live.

It was an eye opening experience, and the perfect way to introduce the four families- the Westren family containing Leigh Westren, fiancée Lara Whelan, mother Sharlene and father Craig. We also had the Moon family, containing sisters Sarah, Jodie, Rebecca and Kellie. The Duncan family contained Emma, Jarrod, Sarah-Jayne and Meg and the Challenor family contained Damien, Nathaniel, Joe and Greg.

One by one, these families competed for immunity and power. Joe became a villain after making his nephew Nathaniel enter an elimination when it should have been him and also giving away immunity to someone other than his brother, Damien.

Despite being eliminated, a twist in the show saw Lara, Nathaniel, Rebecca and Emma return to the show. Two of these four were supposed to be eliminated, but after gaining weight at a weigh in, previously safe contestant Joe joined the line up and was eliminated with Lara, meaning three people were allowed back into the competition.

After 13 long weeks, Kellie, Sarah, Leigh and returnee Emma returned for the finale and despite great odds, Emma Duncan was crowned Australia’s second female Biggest Loser, with Leigh coming in second and Kellie and Sarah coming in third and fourth respectively.

In the same era, My Kitchen Rules returned after a highly successful first season. Its second season seemed to tap into the success MasterChef saw in 2010, and won pretty much every night it was on.

Amongst all the teams, we had High Achievers Kelly and Ash Cooke, Newlyweds Anne-Marie Battista and Nick Sharp, urban hippies Mal Gill and Bec Saul and of course, sisters Sammy & Bella Jakubiak.

It was a toughly contested battle, and MKR became something of a phenomenon. In the end, it was sisters Sammy & Bella who took the crown and have been close to Seven’s heart ever since, even making a few appearances on Dancing with the Stars.

Speaking of which, Dancing With The Stars made its 2011 debut with a big cast. Well, it wasn’t so big, but those people in Seven’s controversy department were prepped and at the ready. A change to the judging panel saw Josh Horner take the place of Mark Wilson, someone who seemed all too keen to create a stir.

The dancing line up consisted of newsreader Samantha Armytage, Home & Away’s Dan Ewing, bungled model Lara Bingle and most infamously, socialite Brynne Edelsten.

Brynne was at the centre of two very public controversies that helped lift ratings for the show. The first saw new judge Josh Horner describe her as a ‘bedazzled sack of potatoes’, causing her to cry after only her first dance. The second saw co-host Sonia Kruger comment on her and her husband, Geoffrey Edelsten’s age gap, referring to the latter as the former’s dad.

Despite all this, the country was ‘bedazzled’ by Brynne’s story, and also that of Samantha Armytage who was also given a beating by the judges. Both stayed in the contest for quite a while longer than many would have thought, with Samantha only just missing out on a place in the final.

Another contestant, Haley Bracken, who’s husband Nathan competed on the show only to be eliminated first, delighted the judges and scored herself a few ten’s, regularly winning challenges.

She made it all the way to the finale with singer Damien Leith and chef Manu Feildel.

While her dancing skills were enough to ward off Damien into third place, she was not able to beat Manu, who won the public vote and therefore the very controversial contest for 2011.

Back to TEN, and their reality ratings juggernaut, MasterChef Australia, returned for its third season. Branded as the biggest yet, a massive mystery box in Sydney Harbour was enough to herald in that promise to viewers watching at home.

The new season had a Cerebral Palsy sufferer, a surfer pin up dude, a few at home mother cooks and a fighter pilot.

Ratings for the season opened fairly high and fairly consistent, but the series was never going to reach the success of 2010. By the end of the season, it was also clear that its days of creating a 3 million plus viewership finale were over.

But there was plenty to celebrate in between. To make up for a lack of inspiration found in most of the dishes presented this year, the contestants headed to the likes of Margaret River, Busselton Jetty, a mine, Malaysia, New York and Melbourne for challenges and episodes.

The production team were in overdrive, and the production of the series was insanely great.

Storytelling also played a big part as many events grabbed news headlines. Firstly was that little fling between Ellie and Hayden which resulted in nothing. The second, and probably the biggest controversy to ever hit the MasterChef kitchen came from contestant Mat Beyer, or more frankly, his smart phone.

During one challenge, it was suspected by the judges that Mat had brought in a smart phone that could have been used to find information on recipes. Their suspicions were somewhat confirmed and he was kicked out of the competition.

Other stories also attracted attention. The shock elimination of CP sufferer John Hughes in the top 50 round, the deletion of fighter pilot Paul Lombardi before the top 24 round even started and the shock walking of contestant Adam Bowen all left viewers with something to watch.

Moving into finals week, and Ellie, Dani, Alana, Michael and Kate were left to fight for the title, although Ellie was eliminated just before all this.

It all came down to Michael and Kate in the finale where mother Kate beat out SA Michael, 87 points to 84. It wasn’t a very memorable finale, and Kate hasn’t been heard of since, but it was still another successful slate for TEN.

Reality television was Seven’s forte in 2011 with Australia’s Got Talent also on the rise. All three judges; Kyle Sandilands, Dannii Minogue and Brian McFadden returned and found the likes of The Old Fella, Ben Price, Jack Vidgen and Cosentino and launched them into the spotlight.

Also launched into the spotlight was comedian Jordan Harris where, after a successful first round of auditions which was based on jokes ‘borrowed’ from other joke makers, he managed to alienate his audience in the semi finals with a less than impressive and rather cringeworthy performance of his own.

They also ‘re-found’ Timomatic who, after modest success on the second season of So You Think You Can Dance Australia in 2009, returned to this competition to place third.

In the end, performer Cosentino placed second to singing schoolboy Jack Vidgen, who was famous in his own right for those veneers.

Seven also launched The Amazing Race Australia, which brought out probably the most diverse range of characters seen on reality television this year. We had Muslims Mo & Mos, Big W employees Anne Marie and Tracy; reunited sisters Alana and Mel and dopey farmers Tom & Matt.

The first season saw these guys race to places like Indonesia, South Africa, Czech Republic, Poland, Singapore and Hong Kong, and face challenges ranging from playing a famous Chinese casino game, to stacking crates of beer to skydiving!

In the end, it was surfer duo Nathan & Tyler, the former of which dated Erin McNaught, won the show over Perth models Renae & Sam. Surprisingly, it all came down to a race around Perth.

But I’m sure you’re all sick of hearing about Seven and TEN for now; so lets visit some of Nine’s reality offerings.

Well, most famously, we had The Block. Now in it’s forth season, the producers mixed things up a bit and introduced a new stripped 7PM format. The show also moved out of apartment renovating with this year’s contestants asked to renovate four houses on a block!

Lastly, there were eight teams, not four. Four of those teams however were eliminated in the first week, but they all made appearances in challenges throughout the series.

The four main couples were Josh & Jenna, a bickering boyfriend/girlfriend duo who were in charge of the only double fronted house on the street; Polly & Waz, a very quirky, young and savvy couple who had nil background in renovating; Katrina & Amie, two sisters with emotions made of concrete and a very stylish yet obscure design technique, and seasoned renovators Tania & Rod.

They were all a bunch of laughs with only a few moments of sadness. There was a time when Tania & Rod were called off the block to attend a family funeral, and there was also a time when Katrina’s Crohn’s disease overtook her emotions a bit. But in the end, these couples, with the help of host Scott Cam, new host Shelley Craft, sometimes embattled onsite manager Keith and a whole set of reward winning challenges, were able to manage four great houses for auction.

The only disappointing thing about this season, was most probably the only thing that the producers didn’t want to end in disappointment- the finale.

After last year’s ‘shock’ announcement that Chez & Brenton’s apartment was to be passed in, it was a surprise to everyone watching when three of the four houses were passed in. It was even more of a shock that the winning house, selling for $15,000 profit, belonged to novice’s Polly & Waz. And it was an EVEN BIGGER shock to Jenna, whose night was turned upside down by a proposal by Josh. She said yes!

Nine also had Top Design, a brand new show by Jamie Durie, once Nine’s love child and host of The Block. The series failed to fire and was at one point shown first run on GEM ahead of a Nine screening.

Robert Davidov won the show, beating out Lisa and Steve at the finale, which was quite a high key affair for such a low key performer. I guess for me personally, the thing I will remember about this show was minutes after blogging the finale of the show on a Friday, news that Big Brother Australia was to return on Nine surfaced.

Nine also had two seasons of The Farmer Wants A Wife, however I only watched the second, which was the series’ seventh overall.

In this season, containing farmers Wil, Trent, Frank, John, Kev and Tim, a seventh mystery girl was added to the picked girls the farmers chose as potential wives. This seventh girl was chosen by the families. The farmers had to decide whether or not to take her back to the farm with him and two others.

Some jumped at the opportunity, some did not.

The show saw numerous exits; most notably, Farmer John’s favourite Belinda. The finale also saw a shocking outcome for Kev, who after two eliminations, his chosen girl got cold feet and left, leaving him with no one to pursue. Potential season eight candidate, anyone?

The season end showcasing the wedding of former contestants Nathan and Amanda.

To end the year, Nine debuted the oftentimes controversial Celebrity Apprentice to a stripped 7PM format. The series contained celebrities including Jesinta Campbell, Deni Hines, Jason Coleman, Julia Morris, Pauline Hanson and Shane Crawford.

Deni became an instant villain; constantly attacking Polly for her lack of celebrity, and generally acting like a spoilt brat and damaged diva. She was soon eliminated.

Pauline Hanson would most likely be considered as the most unlikely hero of the series after showing real integrity and a real maturity towards challenges. She was constantly saved from elimination due to her work ethic and public support backing her, especially after washing some guy’s car in underwear, was shiny.

Another surprise characterisation came from Jason Coleman, who while showed great leadership and well-spokenedness, constantly lost challenges and began to be deemed a villain in the eyes of the contestants who saw his constant need to be in control and his somewhat demeaning mannerisms to be quite rude and somewhat crippling to the receiving contestant’s place in the competition

In the final week, eliminated contestants Polly, Didier, Deni and Max returned to help out finalists Jason, Julia, Shane and Jesinta in what was an explosive and controversial week. Mad Max Markson, who was known for his immaturity, outspokenness and time wasting abilities, somewhat ironically eliminated after competing in a challenge sober of these qualities, returned to give Julia and Jason one more test of patience and control.

But it was Deni Hines who stole the show, seemingly playing up for the cameras and using the villain persona she received in her first stint on the show, and arguing with people, mostly Jesinta, at any opportunity she got.

She later admitted that she did it for fun, and even commended enemy Jesinta on her smarts. It wasn’t enough to let Jesinta and Shane win, and in the end, it all came down to Julia and Jason. Julia Morris won the show, but decided to split the money with Jason Coleman and his charity; a rare show of such true honour and dignity. Julia will be one contestant who’s ‘brand’ isn’t damaged by this show.

TEN also experimented with The Renovators; but it turned into an overall flop, despite showing signs of life throughout its run, and even giving TEN a second place position on finale night. The renovation show saw host Brendan Moar and judges Peter Ho, Barry Du Bois and Robyn Holt guide 20 renovators through challenges, which included a 24-hour makeover of a house on wheels, carted into the show’s massive warehouse studio, and a week trip up to Brisbane to help flood victims, and eliminations which I personally noted for their initial lack of imagination.

Despite the low rating performance of the show, it was generally well received by the public, with many of you suggesting contestants for the Top 20 Reality Contestants of 2011 competition. While it was able to shake comparisons to The Block; its similarity to MasterChef remained and became the show’s only lowlight. Despite all this, I would say that where the Renovators was different was in its increased personal approach to its contestants and its laid back approach to the whole structure of the show.

There were plenty of team changes, but ultimately, Natalie from the sixties suburban (formerly, the shop), August from the shop, Peter from the half done house, Michael from the fibro cottage, Mel from the weatherboard and Luke from the terrace became the show’s finalists for auction night.

While not many houses sold for profit, they did all sell, and it was SA’s Michael Lynch’s fibro cottage that sold for the most and gave the tradie from Laura a win!

Junior MasterChef Australia was generally a miss for TEN, after initially debuting a brand new Top 50 format. Matt Preston took leave for the series, but Matt Moran took his place and Anna Gare returned as a solely Junior MasterChef judge.

The show continued the celebrated production of the main show, and the trips to Disneyland and the inspiring dish after inspiring dish of tasty food was a massive bonus; possibly making it a better season than the first, but the viewers didn’t come, and this is one show that will most probably be forgotten.

For those of you who don’t forget it, Greta Yaxley won the show, with 92 points over Jack’s 84 (if I recall).

Back to Seven and it was another year for The X Factor and it was going to be big. Natalie Imbruglia and Kyle Sandilands didn’t return, but they were replaced by the gorgeous and talented Natalie Bassingthwaighte and singing superstar Mel B. The rest returned.

This year, it was the likes of Emmanuel Kelly; a talented Iraqi orphan and Luke O’Dell, an untalented Adam Lambert wannabe who stole the show; but none of which made it to the finals.

Out of the twelve who did, Mel B’s lot soon disappeared. Tyla Bertolli and Jacqui Newland were both eliminated early on and despite a promising first half for Christina Parie, she wasn’t able to make it into the top 5.

Conversely, Guy Sebastian kept all of his three acts until the final five, with Declan Sykes leaving in fifth place. His other two acts, Johnny Ruffo and Reece Mastin, both became finalists along with Natalie Bassingthwaighte’s Andrew Wishart.

After winning last year with Altiyan Childs, Ronan Keating did not renew his success this year, with his final act Three Wishez only making it to the final four.

In the end, SA’s Reece Mastin beat out Andrew Wishart and Johnny Ruffo (runner up and third place respectively) to become the winner of the show’s third season.

Seven also had The One; a show that briefly saw the light of day in 2008 and pits psychics against each other to find out who is the most gifted.
Judges were Richard Saunders, a sceptic, and Stacey Demarco, a psychic, whose bickering became a somewhat entertainment staple for the show.

Challenges these contestants faced included anything from in studio readings, finding of objects as small as gold to as big as helicopters using only their abilities; and ended in a now controversial challenge which saw them try to locate the body of missing, presumed dead woman, Kerry Whelan.

Greg Riley, empath Heidi Hanley and detective Debbie Malone were awarded finalist positions, and you at home got to determine the winner. Like the psychics themselves, you all chose Greg to be The One- Australia’s Most Gifted Psychic.

The last show of course, was Beauty & The Geek Australia which returned with Bernard Curry as host for its third season. The twist this year was a simple one; a male beauty paired with a female geek in the form of Troy and Helen.

Other than this, the show didn’t deviate away from its usual format of humorous storytelling, classy cutaway quotes, wonderful production and just plain stupidity. There was a time when the human twists, Helen & Troy, were eliminated quite early, but they were able to return via a twist. One episode later and they were eliminated again.

The season saw geek Lachlan and beauty Jordan, who both went on to be apart of the final two teams with their respective partners, hook up, break up and make up throughout the course of the season. The main problem came when Lachlan got his partner Sarah’s name tattooed on his arse. Pardon my French.

During makeovers, which were a dazzling array of spectacles, Dolly announced her decision to quit on medical grounds, leaving previously eliminated contestant Jacelle to fill her void with Gilbert.

In the finale, Mackenzie and Jimmy were eliminated after an exam challenge; Gilbert and Jacelle were eliminated after a formal challenge and Julian and Jordan were eliminated after a quiz, leaving Lachlan and Sarah as this year’s winners.

Lovebirds Mackenzie and Troy also announced their engagement throughout the final.

And that my friends, was the year in reality. Quite a hefty one wasn’t it. But enough about 2011; that was so last year (well, technically it was this year, but you get my drift)- let’s talk 2012.

The only show from the above list confirmed not to be returning is Top Design, but grave fears are being held for The Renovators, which despite being announced by TEN as a returning show, has since fallen victim to second thoughts. The only other show that will probably not return is Junior MasterChef Australia- but it would be for the best. Oh, and The One.

The Biggest Loser Australia will return and revert back to a ‘singles’ format. Dancing with the Stars will return with a new host after Sonia Kruger’s defection to Nine; possibly Nat Bass. My Kitchen Rules returns with a Kiwi pair. MasterChef returns with Matt Preston.

The Farmer Wants A Wife, Celebrity Apprentice Australia, The Block, The Amazing Race Australia, Australia’s Got Talent, The X Factor and Beauty & The Geek Australia will all return, or are all set to return based on viewer satisfaction and ratings.

To join them are a sleuth of new Nine shows. We have The Voice, which features blind auditions and battle rounds. Judges will be Joel Madden, Delta Goodrem, Seal and Keith Urban.

Big Brother returns to our screens on Nine with new host Sonia Kruger and a new ‘Secrets’ format where every housemate has a secret. Location, spin off shows and narrator are yet to be confirmed.

Excess Baggage will be a new celebrity weight loss show where eight overweight celebs pair up with ordinary contestants to lose the flab. Celebrities include Darryn Lyons who has previously competed on Celebrity Big Brother UK, causing a stir after revealing his ‘six pack on top of a beer gut’ formed stomach which evolved due to ‘contouring’. Having watched this season myself, I will warn you now; just in case he takes his top off, don’t eat dinner through this program! Kate Cebrano hosts.

And that is just a taste of what 2012 holds in terms of reality television! It’s the substance which makes up these shows in between which will really determine the flavour. And we won’t know what any of this ‘substance’ is until these seasons debut.

Over the next few months, Throng will still be delivering important reality news. Of course we have the Top 20 Reality Television Contestants of 2011 competition which will run from the 16th of December right through until New Years Eve.

I will then be taking a break for the first half of January before returning with some opinion pieces to get you in the spirit of the 2012 reality ratings season. This will also be my last post before December 16 less any important announcements. I’m sure the other lovely writers here on Throng will be keeping you up to date anyway. There’s always an excuse to log onto Throng.

Then, in 2012 I can officially announce, Throng will be returning its episode-by-episode detailed recaps of EVERY episode of EVERY season of reality in 2012 (minus any last minute disruptions or planned events), so keep an eye out!

That’s all from me; a few last minute thank you’s before I sign off- firstly to AndrewB and Regan for letting me post my thoughts on reality onto this site in the first place. You have given me so much support and I have loved every minute of it.

Johnson, as many of you would know, has helped in nearly every single episode of MasterChef, Junior MasterChef and The X Factor; and has even helped out in other random episodes. I truly thank you for that, Johnson, as you have enriched my knowledge and therefore my love of this genre and this job.

And Ryno; who offered his complete support and helping hand throughout September, and while it didn’t all go to plan, I think your offer to help was the most exciting thing about this year.

And to the rest of the readers, who have commented kindly or constructively, or have just read my work, I am motivated by your continued support and I am proud to be able to do this for such a loving and intellectual community.

I’ll see you all soon; for now, it’s time to take a break.

The sheer amount of times I have mentioned this moment must be enough for you guys to just say ‘thank god it’s over!’ but yes, with this blog post comes the end of the 2011 Reality Television Calendar as we all delve into the silly season ahead. Over the next two days here on Throng; I’ll be looking back at the week and the year that was in television, what you can expect over non-ratings and what 2012 holds in terms of reality television and Throng reality recapping.

Tonight; it is all about the week that was and as we all brush off a night of geeks and beauties, lets remind ourselves of the week of cooking that began on Sunday.

Yes, like all shows mentioned, Junior MasterChef was coming to an end; but it was doing so over the course of four nights! It all began on Sunday where Chandler, Lily, Indigo, Jack, Zac, Harry, Alysha and Greta entered as the final eight.

It was going to be the first of three double eliminations to be had this week and the first challenge was to create ‘The Perfect Pavlova’. After all attempting their very best, it was announced that based on the results of this challenge, Greta, Zac, Indigo and Jack progressed to the final six, leaving Indigo, Lily, Alysha and Harry to battle it out in a second round.

Here, they had to recreate Guillaume Brahimi’s Turban of Scampi. While a bit of a scandal ensured when a cast member left shell in some of Lily’s pre-prepared scampi portion, this was not aired, and Lily was eliminated probably because of it with Chandler.

To Monday and the final six entered to find a massive conveyor belt coming out of a massive mystery box. One contestant, after today, was to be given a free pass to the finale while two more would be asked to leave the competition.

After winning this challenge, which involved picking ingredients as they emerged from the mystery box on the conveyor and creating a meal, Greta was able to pick the core ingredient for a Thai food inspired invention test. She chose Duck and was also given five minutes more time than everybody else. This was also the first challenge not to use a score boarding system.

The added time and advantage proved well for Greta as she won the night; progressing through unto the final. It was the end of the road for Indigo and Alysha.

On Tuesday, and the semi-final, the boys were asked to cook two dishes of their choice; a main and a dessert; with only one hour allowed for each dish.

They all impressed as they cooked along the Port Jackson coast on Bennelong Point but only Jack had what it took to face off with Greta in the finale. Zac and Harry were eliminated.

In the grand finale, we saw two rounds worth 50 points each. The first round saw them cooking a Donna Hay inspired dessert while the second saw them cooking a Tetsuya spider crab dish. In the end, Greta won the Junior MasterChef Australia 2011 crown with a record breaking 92 points to Jack’s 84 and was awarded the trophy by last year’s winner, Isabella Bliss.

It was a heartwarming conclusion to a doomed show; one we will miss dearly if and when it is given flick.

To Celebrity Apprentice Australia on Monday, and the first actual finale of the week, the first part of this episode was simply a continuation on the previous Wednesday’s Yellow Brick Road advertisement launch. It included more cross promotion, more Max Markson and more Deni Hynes.

In the end, Jesinta and Shane lost the challenge with Jason and Julia crowned finalists, but there could only be one winner and the title went to Julia Morris. She was nice enough to split the $100,000 prize money with Jason for his charity; a rare show of such gratitude on shows like this.

Safe to say that this show WILL be back in 2012, as per Nine’s 2012 line-up announcement. But will it be the same?

The X Factor has a massive four hour finale split over two nights. Andrew Wishart (Natalie Bassingthwaighte), Johnny Ruffo and Reece Mastin (both Guy Sebastian) battled it out in a star studded performance show which saw the trio perform four different songs, tour the country (the week before, of course), duet with the likes of The Fray, Salt-n-Pepa and a little known star, Kylie Minogue and of course, pitch their new winner’s single.

On Tuesday, Johnny Ruffo’s early elimination saw an unlikely finalist candidate emerge in Andrew Wishart, making SA’s Reece Mastin’s win all that more predictable. Mastin’s winner’s single, Good Night, which sounds a lot like Pink’s Raise Your Glass, began topping charts as early as that night; but the real stage stopper was a performance by Kylie Minogue. And breathtaking it was.

Luke Jacobz did rushingly say at the end of the show, ‘see you next year’ and with ratings as high as they were; I’d say he aint lying.

The One also ended on Wednesday with Heidi Hanley, Greg Riley and Debbie Malone trying to collect your phone numbered votes while taking part in an odd but interesting challenge- to locate a missing body. As of today, the body of Kerry Whelan’s body has not been found; but the subject matter of the challenge alone pretty much dwarfed the appeal of the in house challenge that preceded it; trying to find gold in cases. Some may wonder why two amazingly different challenges were scheduled for the same episode.

Richard and Stacey bickered for what will probably be the final time, due to poor reception and tumbling ratings, before the psychics and Australia predicted and voted respectively for GREG to be The One 2011 and crowned Australia’s Most Gifted Psychic. Yeah, don’t feel so special now, do you Charmaine Wilson!

And of course, the week ended tonight where after an exam challenge eliminated Jimmy & Mackenzie, a formal challenge eliminated Gilbert and Jacelle and a quiz eliminated Julian & Jordan; Sarah & Lachlan were crowned winners of Beauty & The Geek Australia 2011. A quirky show that will most probably return next year. Its finale also included the announcement of the engagement of beauties Troy Thompson and Mackenzie Gogo-Smits.

So with that, the final week of reality for 2011 is over. It has been an emotional, nostalgic but hectic week. Tomorrow, we will delve briefly into the year that was for reality television; revisiting shows like The Biggest Loser Australia, My Kitchen Rules, Australia’s Got Talent, Dancing With The Stars Australia, MasterChef Australia, Top Design, The Block, The Renovators, The Farmer Wants A Wife, The One, Beauty & The Geek Australia, The X Factor, Junior MasterChef Australia, Celebrity Apprentice Australia and The Amazing Race Australia.

I will also talk a little bit more on the Top 20 Reality Television Contestants for 2011 competition which debuts on 16 December. To conclude, we will also talk about the upcoming reality highlights in 2012 including returning series’, The Biggest Loser Australia, My Kitchen Rules, Australia’s Got Talent, Dancing With The Stars Australia, MasterChef Australia, The Block, Beauty & The Geek Australia, The X Factor, Celebrity Apprentice Australia and The Amazing Race Australia, and debut or returning series’, The Voice, Excess Baggage and Big Brother.

But for now, relax and have a good night!

In the third out of five finales for this week; we head to the Junior MasterChef kitchen where it is a battle between Jack and Greta! Who will win this very epic title and cook their way to victory? Find out now! Hope you can stay up till 9.30!

We are given a recap of the finalist’s journey before we get into it.

The top 20 kids arrive at the MasterChef kitchen and after a fleeting visit to the petting zoo; they enter the MasterChef kitchen where the judges are awaiting them. We get to see a recap of these guy’s successes, as we did with Jack and Greta before.

Gary announces the day as the finale (as if we didn’t know) and with that, we welcome in the two finalists- Jack and Greta!
George welcomes the two to the top two and tells them that shortly, one will be crowned, Number One Junior Masterchef in
Australia! Anna asks how Greta is feeling and she thinks this is all amazing and surreal.

Jack feels like being here is a dream come true. I believe it is Caroline who then expresses her excitement for the two of them before we hear some comments from the other kids about their favourite dish from the finalists.

They then get rousing compliments from the judges to round off the introduction.

Gary tells them that today; they will cook in two challenges worth 50 points each totalling 100. They are both, of course, on zero to begin with.

George tells them that challenge one is an invention test- a fabulous fruit dessert. Matt tells them that they will have to impress a legend…Donna Hay. She is expecting enormous results from them today. Gary tells them that they need a core ingredient and tells them that today; there is a surprise. They enter and two big trees await them. The fruit trees are apparently ‘magical MasterChef fruit trees’ because they have multiple fruits growing on them. They will have a minute to pick all the ingredients that they want. They can also choose stuff from the rest of the pantry. Greta wants some citrus fruits and Mango. She thinks about making a tart.

Their time in the pantry is soon up and they head to their benches. They have an hour to create the dessert and their time begins!

Donna and George go to Greta who is hoping her tart turns out right. She says she is only going to serve a rectangle from the tart and Donna is concerned that it would fall apart over the curd’s wobbliness. Donna suggests serving it whole but to go one step further- she decides to go against her wishes.

After the break, Jack is making a deconstructed version of a childhood favourite which I will get to later. That dish is a strawberries and cream. His dish impresses and even blows away Donna but George wonders if he can get it all done. He is confident he can.

45 minutes remain and the crowd upstairs are howling at them; seemingly split between Jack and Greta. Matt goes to visit Jack who is making Chocolate Cylinders by rolling chocolate with plastic. He is confident despite being messy which Matt confirms will happen in the industry.

Greta is blending her mousse elements together and we see that she actually has a lot of things going on.

30 minutes remain and Greta is stirring her curd which just isn’t thickening. She begins to panic but George comes over to help her out. After adding a few dashes of cornflower, he breaks her out of her panic and tells her she is doing great. It is a heartwarming moment.

The contestants are talking about the progress of the contestants before we head back to Jack who has put his chocolate coated plastic into the blast chiller to cool which, as Matt tells him, is wrong. He must roll them THEN blast chill them. He gets them out and breathes on them but it is too late, so he starts again. He is shaking so much, it isn’t working!
After the break, Jack is still having problems with the chocolate cylinders, so instead of wrapping the chocolate cylinders together, he just rolls up the plastic and then coats the inside with chocolate. Will it work?

It seems to be. And he gets a round of applause for his efforts.

Greta is working fast, but not fast enough for Donna. Greta’s mousse isn’t coming out but after help from Matt, it comes out onto the board and it looks great. She can now move on to other things.

Jack has piped mousse into the cylinder but he can’t remove the plastic as there is too much chocolate. Matt starts having a little go at him but it was his bloody fault. Matt gives him a hand and soon enough; he gets it off.

Greta’s tart is taking too long, so she decides to do a deconstructed version of it. It still looks nice, but now we will have two deconstructed versions of dishes.

Jack finishes his cylinder off with a drizzle of chocolate and it looks amazing. Soon enough; the time is up.

Now it is time for tasting and Jack is first with his creation. He has a deconstructed strawberries and cream. It looks amazing and the judges know it was a frantic hour in the kitchen.

After a bit of a talk where he says he is confident and hopes he can win them over, the judges judge. Anna thinks the dish is sophisticated looking. They taste and George loved the taste of the strawberries and Matt just compliments the entire dish to nice piano music. They all love the presentation however Donna doesn’t like the colour of the mousse. They score his dish and with that, judging is done for Jack.

Greta is next and she has deconstructed citrus tart which she reveals is a new decision of hers. She thinks the flavours should impress. George loves how she was able to adjust and Donna did think she was going to change her mind in the end.
They love it and George loves the short bread and calls it a dish for a restaurant. Anna loved the textures and the flavours and Donna compliments her bounce back.

It is now time to score Greta and then it is off to the result.

Jack is first to have his scores delivered and Donna gives him an 8 (out of 10) with Anna following suit. And for that matter, so does Matt with George giving him a lovely nine! Gary gives him an eight to end up with, leaving him with a nice 41/50 to start off the scoring.

Greta is next. Donna gives her a 9 with Anna giving her an 8 and Matt giving her a 9. George gives her a 9 out of ten, leaving Gary giving her a 9 and the crowd goes wild. She has gotten 44 out of 50- putting her in first place.

Jack has more determination heading into round two. Gary tells them to prepare themselves as this is the final challenge. He describes the following pressure test ‘their personal Everest’ and will be the mastermind of a cooking icon. It is none other than TETSUYA!

He arrives and the judges welcomes him to the kitchen. Jack notes his dishes is complicated and hopes it is not seafood. Greta is petrified. Tetsuya will also be judging the dish. So, what will they cook?
The answering cloche is brought out and Tetsuya goes to open it up. After the break, the crazy looking dish is revealed to be Tian of Queensland Spanner Crab. Jack is amazed and petrified by the dish with Greta calling it amazing; presentation wise. They go off to taste the dish so they know what to recreate.

They think it is delicious and Greta particularly likes the textures and can’t believe they are about to cook it.

George gives them both pressure points before they are told that they have only 80 minutes to reproduce this dish. And guess what, they have to make it THREE TIMES!

With that, they head to their stocked up benches and their last challenge begins!
Jack begins work on his stock and mousse and it seems Greta is following suit; probably per the recipe.

Kieran says it doesn’t take long for Jack to messy up his bench while Greta has a nice shiny bench to her disposal.

Gary and Tetsuya go to Jack who is aiming to up his scores by one to win the show. They are looking forward to his dish.

Greta is looking worried as Jack is ahead of her which shouldn’t be too much of a concern as it isn’t a bloody race. She is working on her stock and leaves it to boil. As she does some other stuff, the other contestants point her back to the pot which is steaming!
The judges head over to Greta who asks them if her stock boiling is OK and Tetsuya says it should be fine and tells her not to panic. Aww.

Jack however is making her panic by whirling ahead behind her. The judges talk amongst themselves about the challenge and they note how they are doing OK and not too stressed. Tetsuya notes Greta is a little behind but is clean and organized; the complete opposite to Jack.

Gary thinks it will be the small differences that will make or break the contestants.

An hour remains and the contestants up ahead are clapping her on. Tetsuya continues to dish out his advice. Greta hits a snag- he’s added all the crab mousse to the meat which is wrong because it will make too much for what is needed. Tetsuya tells her it will be OK to feed the five dishes.

Jack, who isn’t getting much air time, is doing OK however Matt interviews the contestants who notes he may be stressed but hiding it.

Jack is using tofu from plastic wrapping and has no idea how to use it and doesn’t see that you have to squeeze it out a tube. The contestants laugh at his ignorance.
George takes this time to talk about what Tetsuya was doing when he was their age and he says he was still going fishing!

45 minutes remain and Jack is starting to mould his mousse and again, Tetsuya gives his advice. They then put it on to cook. 30 minutes remain and they are all still powering ahead with no problems until Greta begins to measure her oils wrong! Oh dear! Another snag for Greta.

After the break, we see Greta’s stock measurements are all wrong. She has a litre of stock when she was only meant to have 200mL. She tastes her stock as she adds soy sauce and hopes she can get the same taste as she remembers the taste from the dish which she remembers.

15 minutes remain and Jack is working on his veggies. Tetsuya gives him some tips on how to slice his veggies and it looks very delicate. Soft music ensures as he puts the final steps to his dish.

We’re down to our last few minutes and Gary invites Greta with Anna and she says she thinks she will finish on time. Gary loves the look of her mousse moulds and Greta begins her garnishes and hurries the judges away as she has little time.

Gary and Anna then get Jack to stop and talk about his progress. All he has to do is julienne his shallots.

With that, they leave and they let the kids do their last bit of cooking which is, of course, the plating up. Applause ensures as the components of the plates come together nicely.

The ten final seconds sees the most progress on these dishes and for the final time, time is up- ‘step away from your benches’.

Jack thinks his dish looks similar to Greta’s.

In to the tasting and Greta hopes they like her dish. Greta tells them time was the hardest part of this dish. She cannot believe she has completed a Tetsuya dish and the fact he will be tasting it- ‘oh my god, I am so nervous’.

They plate up and taste.

Gary loves the cutting of the ingredients and loves the texture of the crab and mousse. He thinks it is a great representation of the dish. Tetsuya says the dish has what he wanted from it. Matt loves how it focuses on the crab.

They then score the dish for Greta’s final time.

Jack is next and he says he thinks we went pretty well and would have liked more time. He is very proud with what he has done. Three points behind Greta, he does think he has done enough to take out the title. With that, he leaves for the final tasting of the season…ever?!

The judges note that it looks different from the actual dish and sees the mousse looks firmer. George loves the cooking from the crab meat and they all think the dish bursts out with flavour. Matt calls it a ‘class act’ and Gary thinks he has done the julienne brilliantly. Anna loves how he can do something amazingly well the first time and Tetsuya thinks it is well packaged.
For the final time, the judges score. George doesn’t want any peaking from Anna.

With that, it is results time and as the music intensifies, the judges walk out to a crowd of contestants and the final two. It is as if this is the biggest event of the century.

George reminds them that even the runner up will receive $10,000 to the winner’s $15,000.

Jack hopes he wins and Greta says whatever happens she is the top girl. We remind ourselves of the scores:

GRETA: 44

JACK: 41

And now to the scoring of the final challenge. Again, each vote is out of ten.

Jack goes first and Tetsuya gives him an eight. Gary gives him an eight as well. George gives him a nine; a very generous offer. Matt scores his dish a nine as well, leaving Anna to give him a rounding off nine. This means he has scored 43/100- taking his score to 84.

To Greta and Gary gives her a nine out of ten. Tetsuya gives her a nine as well. Next up is Anna who scores her a massive TEN! George gives her another TEN! Matt rounds it off with a winning score of TEN!

GRETA IS THE WINNER OF JUNIOR MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA 2011!

She may be the final one at that.

Tetsuya tells her he wants to see her working in a fine dining restaurant and she hugs him. She reveals that she wants to continue with food and show the world her passion.

Jack, the second ‘Jack’ to come second in Junior MasterChef Australia, says he has made himself proud. And with that, their families come in; the most heartwarming moment of the season filled with a nice operatic score in the background.

Greta’s mother, Liz, says the process has helped her grow up and Jack’s mother Kaye thinks he is amazing.

The prizes are then granted to them and with that; a surprise! Last year’s winner Isabella Bliss comes in and gives them a trophy. Wow, she looks so grown up. In a way, I wished this series kept going strong so we could have a day in the future when we could revisit some of these past winners.

And with that, the possibly final season of Junior MasterChef comes to a close. Despite the length of the episode, it seemed to finish very quickly and the ending didn’t feel unimportant. This shows the truly spectacular production values this program offers. The ending was an emotional one and the added surprise of Isabella was a true indication that MasterChef acknowledges its past; a very good quality to have.

It is a pity more people didn’t warm to the show. I know it was boring at times and there may be an oversaturation of MasterChef on television and TEN’s schedule doesn’t help things either; but I do hope one day, this series returns as this was one of the most funniest, smartest, most well produced, proudest and delicious piece of television I have watched; even moreso than original MasterChef.

Courtney’s Verdict: 9.9/10

Courtney’s Junior MasterChef Australia Season Two Overall Verdict: 9.3/10

In a closely fought race, Greta, [11], from WA, was tonight crowned Australia’s Junior MasterChef 2011 over Jack, 12, from Queensland.

The grand finale saw both Greta and Jack compete in a series of challenges under the watchful eye of judges Gary, George, Matt Moran and Anna as well as special guest judges Tetsuya and Donna Hay. Winning with a total score of 92/100 to Jack’s 84/100, it was Greta who impressed the judges with her Deconstructed Citrus Tart with Tropical Mousse on Macadamia Nuts with Fresh Fruit and then, her replica of a famous Tetsuya dish – Steamed Tian of Queensland Spanner Crab with Bean Curd, Water Chestnuts and Junsai – judged and praised by Tetsuya himself.

It’s already been a hectic week with Greta into the final and Chandler, Lily, Alysha and Indigo already getting the boot. Tonight, two more leave as either Jack, Zac or Harry will be thrown into the final two. Who will it be?

After some fleeting views of Sydney Harbour, the three boys to compete tonight head up towards the Sydney Opera House as we are reminded of how they all got to where they are today.

The four judges welcome them to Sydney Harbour and those shots are amazing. George runs through all the famous restaurants around the area as Matt spruiks his very own.

Gary tells them they are all world class and they have to cook the best food possible to get into the final.

We are reminded of Greta’s win yesterday. Gary tells them that two will be eliminated today.

Anna tells them that today, they will be cooking from the heart with no restrictions and can be their signature dishes.

They will have a whopping two hours to create a main course and a dessert. Anna tells them that the catch is, they can only spend one hour on each dish. They tell the contestants what they expect before their time begins. They rush to their benches which are fashionably placed near the harbour. Can you go to any famous location in Australia without seeing a set of MasterChef benches?

They are all grabbing stuff from their open pantry behind them and Gary jokes for them to just wheel the whole thing over to their plates.

Harry is doing a Rabbit Rack by the sound of things and Zac is doing a beach inspired dish. Gary goes over to him and he says he loves cooking despite only knowing how to do it for the last couple of years.

Gary then goes to Harry and realises he has a lot of mustard marinade but Harry says it is needed. Of course, it is for the main course but Harry confirms he has never made the dish before. He just wanted to go out on a limb.

To Jack and he is making a smoked rack of lamb, something that impresses Gary. He warns him not to overcook the lamb. To Jack, it will be a different experience smoking the lamb.

After the break, we are back in Sydney where they have 45 minutes remaining on their first dish. They are all working furiously with Zac working on his dip. Gary tastes his dip and thinks it is too eggy and asks him to put in more oil.

Harry has a lot of rabbit for a backup dish but finds he is cutting too much rabbit off the bones. Gary gives him a hand and he is soon onto cooking it. It looks beautiful!

They have 30 minutes left on the first portion and Jack is about to smoke his lamb in a test of skills. Hopefully it will work.

Zac is adding food colouring into salt as we see a back story of him. Jack is having a few problems with getting his smoker hot enough. He has fifteen minutes to go.

Harry is making his jus and he says it isn’t too hard. He runs through the whole process.

Jack’s smoke box is still not working and there’s only 10 minutes to go. He makes the decision to finish the dish in a pan.

Five minutes remain and his lamb racks aren’t cooking on the pan so Gary gives him ideas on what to do to make them cook faster. He just tries to maximise his time with the fry. Harry has confidently and calmly finished his dish (one that no one has ever done apparently).

Soon enough; time is up and they all seem somewhat happy.

After the break, it is time for dessert and their one hour begins. Jack will be doing a Black Forest cake and again, wee see a back story for Jack. Zac is making a rosewater meringue. Last time he tried to make a meringue, it didn’t work well. Hopefully he will have more luck today.

Harry is making White Chocolate friands and he begins to do the first few steps. George goes over to the winning streak contestant and walks through his successes. Harry thinks this dessert will knock their socks off. George says he no longer has to prove his worth to anyone but himself as he is a million miles ahead of everyone. Aww, how sweet! We see a back story of Harry again.

45 minutes remain in this challenge and George heads to Zac and walks through his successes. I’m guessing he will do the same with Jack.

Jack is rushing with so much to do, as is Harry by the look of it. Harry wants the friands to be perfect. Zac pipes out his meringues and apparently it isn’t going to work! The mixture is too runny. He begins to stress but tries to keep himself focussed. He has to start over yet again! Oh dear!

After the break, Zac begins on his second egg white batch having wasted 20 minutes on the first. 30 minutes remain and Zac has his new mixture done, but will it be good? He thinks he may be known as the demon of meringues.

It looks much better and he is happy with it, putting them in the oven.

He now goes for all the other aspects of the dish.

Jack is starting to plate up his intricate dish and he is working towards amazing presentation. Zac gets his meringues out and they are perfectly cooked. 2 minutes remain and it is all about the plating up.

Harry thinks the other two dishes look amazing and he runs us through it. Come on, Harry. Leave it to the judges.

Ten seconds remain and it was a race to the finish as the challenge comes to an end.

Jack thinks his two dishes look amazing and they all high five each other with the end of the final challenge before the finale.

Now to the challenge and Gary compliments the setting and debriefs the challenge.

Zac will be first for tasting. To summarise and he has done a Seafood Platter for a main and a Rosewater Meringue dessert.

Time to taste and Zac leaves for the process. It seems it was too salty. Matt compliments the whole dish except having the prawns on the salt which is blue, turning the prawns blue. Anna loves the story.

To the dessert and they do like it with Anna loving the meringue and George loving the combination of flavours. Still, I don’t think that’ll save him.

Harry is next and he has Pan-Fried Rabbit Racks for mains and Raspberry and White Chocolate Friand for dessert. They seem to love the main, especially the mustard marinade. Anna thinks he has cooked the rabbit to perfection. The uplifting music pretty much sums up the verdict for this show.

There is mixed reactions for his dessert but overall, they seem to like it.

Jack is last with his very big dessert which is bigger than the main. He has lamb cutlets for mains and ‘Jack’s Black Forest Garden’.

They try the lamb and George loves the presentation and calls the taste ‘glorious’. Actually, we could have 2 out of 2 finales with a ‘Jack’ in it. They do condemn the small portion.

To the dessert and they love all the individual elements. Except for the cherry with the pip. They love the rest of the meal.

Now for the results and Greta is standing there waiting for the verdict Which boy will join her. Harry wants it so bad and his constant hogging of the cutaway pretty much confirms his place in the top two.

So, who will actually join Greta.

The winner of today’s challenge and therefore the second finalist for 2011 is… Jack! Well, I’ll eat my hat! Another bloody Jack! Let’s see if he gets further than Jack Lark!

That does mean the end of the line for Zac and Harry who will leave the top four with a big cash prize. They get their prizes and we see a final recap of their time on the show. They say goodbye and hear some final comments from the finalists and the episode ends.

A very well done episode if I say so myself. Nothing much to add to the criticism but to say it was fun, exciting and a little sad; but possibly a few too many minutes of camera time for Harry and Zac and not so much for Jack. We hardly bloody saw him!

Well, that’s the final episode before the finale and a small note…

Remember parents, LET YOUR KIDS STAY UP FOR THE ENTIRE FINALE TOMORROW! I’m sure TEN don’t want no angry letters!

Courtney’s Verdict: 9.3 (just to be a bit different)/10

Phew, that was one hell of an elimination last night, wasn’t it? Tonight, we should just be able to relax and enjoy a bit of fun, light hearted cooking from the top six! Well, maybe for one of them this night will be a little special- as they are granted a position fit for a finalist… and for two it will in fact mean, ANOTHER ELIMINATION!

The kids arrive at the kitchen knowing they are in the top six. Their excitement is pumped up when they come out to see a conveyor belt hooked to a massive mystery box. As they gather at their benches, George ignores the elephant in the room and invites them warmingly into the top six. And now to business.

Matt tells them that there is no need for a scoreboard (happy for Harry, not so happy for Greta) and tells them that at days end, one of them will be into the grand final. However, two of them will be going home!

Anna asks them what their next challenge is, and it is obviously a ‘mystery box’ challenge; but Anna introduces it as the Mystery Box Conveyor Belt Challenge. Matt tells them that as usual, they will have 50 minutes to prepare a dish and tells them, 30 ingredients will come down the conveyor belt for their use.

George explains that the maximum amount of items they can take off the conveyor is 5. Matt tells them that picking ingredients early gives them longer to cook but their wanted ingredients may not arrive until later. George tells them the prize is a ‘massive advantage’ going into the next challenge.

With that, their 50 minutes and the conveyor belt begins with the first few ingredients being potatoes, garlic (a favourite for everybody but Zac), Cannellini Beans, Mushrooms, Parsley, Okra, Lebanese Cucumbers, Chicken, Tofu (Greta wants this), lamb (Alysha’s choice), cherry tomatoes (most people take this), prawns, George’s luggage (wait, what?), Brussels sprouts, Pak Choy (and at this point, Zac has nothing to cook with) and chilli (and if they want to spike George, get them! Harry sure does). Matt goes to Indigo who is making a puree for her dish. She is excited for the top six.

Back to the conveyor and Zac is still waiting for something. Protein would be ideal but the next thing to come out is Pigs Ears. Eww. To Alysha and George finds out she is doing some nice lamb chops just over well done. George hopes the lamb isn’t chewy and tough but says it smells wonderful.

The conveyor belt spits out salmon which Zac (along with Greta and Jack) grabs and begins to cook it (maybe a bit too early). Ciabatta bread comes out with no takers (of course, without Kumar in the kitchen, there probably wouldn’t have been) and baby carrots with asparagus. Pancetta is next and Zac is still waiting for a herb. The next thing to come out is basil which is the last thing to come out of the conveyor. They all have 20 minutes left.

George goes to Zac and tells him his fish is overcooked (and it hasn’t even gone in the oven!).

After the break, the heat is on with ten minutes to go. Zac has another piece of salmon to use and George walks him through the steps to cook it perfectly.

Anna goes to Harry and his prawn puree sauce thingy does have enough chilli for George.

Greta is working on her marinade for her salmon. She pours it on the salmon and chucks it in the oven. Anna comes over and is happy with her idea.

Zac is working on his salmon but with five minutes to go, there’s not too much time to oven it. Harry is a bit so, so with his sauce, but hopes the judges don’t pick up on it.

With 30 seconds to go, Greta takes her salmon out, hoping it is cooked and soon enough, time is up anywhere.

Alysha has forgotten her Pak Choy which annoys her, but it is tasting time.

Indigo and Zac are first up with Zac’s Crispy Skin Salmon dish. Is it overcooked? No. George calls it spot on. Matt echoes these compliments but tells him he could have added some acidity or something.

Indigo has a ‘Lamb Spring Garden’ for them to taste and George loved how she cooked it in her own way but says the lamb may be a bit overcooked.

Alysha and Jack are next with Alysha’s Sweet Lamb Cutlets and tells them that the Lamb is well done. No question about that. Anna loves the plating up but says it is a shame the Pak Choy isn’t there. Anna says the mushroom was undercooked.

Zac has Pan Fired Salmon and Pak Choy. Anna thinks he has put together some great ingredients but thinks the presentation could be better.

Last are Greta and Harry and Greta’s Salmon on Pak Choy but she thinks she has undercooked the salmon.

After the break, the judges taste and in pure Greta-form, it is cooked beautifully. The judges taste and Matt loves the sauce and describes it nicely with some nice piano music in the background. He gives her a few tips for her asparagus.

Chilli, Garlic & Soy Prawns are on Harry’s menu and to finish off the judging, Matt calls the dish perfectly cooked and compliments most of the dressing. Matt then condemns his other garlic sauce which is a source of laughter.

With that, it is time for the results. George tells them that the winner is…Greta. So what is her advantage? Now, onto the next HUGE challenge and a one last stop for one finalist and two eliminees.

Anna tells them that the challenge is an invention test! The theme for this invention test is… Thai Food. Anna gives them a few tips and they then have 50 minutes to work, except Greta, who will be given 5 extra minutes and gets to choose the core ingredient everyone has to use in this dish. Off to the pantry she goes.

The ingredients to choose from are prawns, duck and snapper. She doesn’t like the snapper determined by her reactions.

Out in the kitchen, she reveals her choice to be… (well, we find out after an ad break, but judging by Jack’s cutaway, it’s gonna be Duck) Duck! Yes, Jack is not impressed.

Matt gives them some tips and pointers before their five minutes in the pantry begins. Greta will then go to the bench for her five minutes before the others go for their 50 minutes. Off they go.

People are running everywhere and as usual, I will detail the dishes later on.

When they are all done, Greta’s time begins and she drops a lime; wasting a bit of time. She will be doing roasted duck if I hear correctly. Alysha is nervous watching Greta get a start on her dish. Soon enough; they are down to 50 minutes and they rush to their benches.

Alysha is happy with duck and George heads to her bench to find her cooking a Thai Duck and Coconut Curry. She has a lot of spices and herbs in there which George loves. He is amazed she is doing all this at her age.

Matt goes to Harry who is doing Crispy Skin Duck Breast with a salad and Matt calls his cooking style ‘smart’. He thinks he can win the challenge if he gets everything on his plate.

Anna heads to Indigo who is doing a marinated Duck salad and she is hoping for fresh flavours. It’s all sweets and smiles right now but there’s still 30 minutes to go, anything could happen. The judges speak about the challenge and they seem to love Alysha’s curry and the smell coming from it. George thinks his will be Alysha’s winning challenge.

Matt confirms Harry wants this to be the challenge he wants to win.

Harry found a bug in his mint and needs to wash it! Greta still thinks this guy will be tough competition.

After the break, Anna goes to Zac’s bench who is doing a smoked duck and Anna encourages him to the finale.

With ten minutes to go, Zac’s duck isn’t cooking and George gets him to fry it or his duck will be raw.

Cooking is coming to a close as plating begins in the final five minutes. Zac cuts into his duck and it is raw so he cuts it up even more and puts it back on the pan. He doesn’t have much time- only 10 seconds remain! Ooh, the pressure. Sure enough, time is up! For two people, it’ll be the last time.

Greta and Harry are first for cooking. Greta has a very dirty apron. Harry has Crispy Skin Duck and Herb Salad. The judges think it looks good and George calls his dish like ‘Santa’s Sack’ and Matt calls him confident and tells him to make Greta nervous.

Greta has Duck Laab which looks interesting and Matt says she keeps surprising them! He calls her dish, restaurant quality. Next is Jack and his Pan-Fried Duck but with little confidence going into the challenge, can he come out of it all guns blazing. They seem to love his sauce with Anna calling it a beautiful dish, finding it astonishing he has never tried duck.

Alysha is next with her curry and George calls her the curry queen. Matt loves the duck but thinks the curry needs a bit more texture.

Last two are Zac and Indigo and it is make or break for Zac. He has Tea-Smoked Duck but it wasn’t smooth sailing.

Matt tells him it is perfectly cooked and a lovely piano background begins as he gets top accolades for his duck and his top save.

Indigo is happy with her Thai Marinated Duck Salad dish. Anna calls the salad vibrant but says the duck is a bit overcooked.

Now to the all important result of the year (minus the actual winner result). The chef through to the finale is… Greta. Yeah, I should be on The One…a bit predictable.

So, she is through to the 2011 Junior MasterChef finale. Only three of them will be battling it out for the second position tomorrow. These contestants will be… Zac…Jack…and…Harry. Aww, Harry was so happy, but I feel that sometimes they make too big a joke of him. Still, he has consistency.

And with that, Indigo and Alysha will be heading home.

We see their back story and their best bits before they exit the kitchen for the final time.

A very good yet possibly too predictable final six episode there and all these eliminations are really building up the suspense for that grand final on Wednesday. For some reason, I felt the elimination was handled better tonight and I do think everything was deserved.

Courtney’s Verdict: 9.2 (yes, again!)/10

Tonight could possibly be the last time you are able to view Junior MasterChef Australia on a weekend. Sad, isn’t it! Well, tonight, it will be sad for two young hopefuls as the final eight become the final six. Yes, that does in fact mean ELIMINATION!

The contestants arrive at the MasterChef kitchen for what could be their last challenge. They enter where three of the judges (not Gary) welcome them. George points out the fact that four are boys and four are girls. He tells them that two will be going home tonight. With that, we view the scoreboard which looks like this:

GRETA: 31

ZAC: 28

INDIGO: 26

JACK: 25

LILY: 24

HARRY: 17

ALYSHA: 16

CHANDLER: 14

Nice and spread out, with Alysha and Chandler in the firing line to enter the episode. George tells them that once the next challenge is completed, the standings will change accordingly and the top four will be safe and through to Monday’s episode (the final six). The bottom four will then have one more go at making it through.

Anna tells them that the first challenge will be ‘The Perfect…Pavlova’. The contestants are thrilled, especially Zac. Anna reminds them that the scoring system will remain the same. Matt tells them that they have 80 minutes for this challenge and their time begins.

They all rush for the pantry where they collect their fruit, cream, cornflower and everything else that goes into a Perfect Pavlova.
The contestants are quick to their benches and Greta begins to separate her egg whites. They begin to talk about what Pavlova they will be making, but I will be telling you all that later. To Zac, and his meringue is not thickening but he is hoping for the best. Greta holds her meringue mix above her head. The fact she doesn’t get coated in it proves that it is ready.

George heads to Harry and eggs him on to do well, despite the fact Harry can’t do anything to get out of the bottom four. He is just going to go in all guns blazing. Very good spirit there, Harry! George then goes to Indigo who reacts very maturely when she realises she has forgotten to put some ingredients in. She runs through her strategy, saying her ‘normal Pavlova’ (today, she will be doing two smaller ones) usually takes 80 minutes. George isn’t concerned…just yet.
To the judges and Anna loves how they are doing their own perfect version of the classic Pavlova. George knows that the leaderboard will be shuffled today.

Zac breaks down when his meringue doesn’t work again. After the break, Matt comes over to help him out; telling him his bowl is too wet; it needs to be bone dry. He gets him to whip his whites BEFORE adding the sugar and bingo, it works!

50 minutes to go and Alysha is worried, having not cooked a pav before. Her meringue seems to be working but she doesn’t know how to get it out of the bowl properly!

Lily and Harry start to eat some of the meringue. Harry concedes that Lily has done better than her. Anna comes over to Alysha, who has Pavlova in her hair. She will be doing a 50/50 Pavlova which I’m guessing is half one flavour and half another.

With 10 minutes to go, they begin to remove their pavs out of the oven and George is excited with Anna loving the different types of pavlova out there. I must say, I too am surprised by the variety. George is hoping Harry does well.

Harry is putting his topping on and it cracks at the top, going everywhere. No judge needed for crying junior; Lily tells him it still looks awesome. Is she being sincere, or is this pure strategy?

Soon enough, their time is up and they take a sigh of relief; except for Harry who isn’t too happy.

To judging and Harry & Lily go up first. Against Lily’s, Harry’s classic Pavlova is a bit of a mush. George notices the presentation and Harry says he wasn’t really happy with it. The judges get Harry and Lily to come up to taste. Anna loves the texture and Matt says it tastes great. George notes that they all kept going back for more, calling it a 10 out of 10.

Lily also has classic Pavlova and we get a back story of Lily playing with her younger sister. Will hers taste as good? Anna calls her clever; loving the textures and flavour.

Next up are Indigo and Jack with Indigo quite worried. She has a Lemon Curd Pavlova and there’s not much there…

George comments about how she said she missed some ingredients and wonders if it will be a problem. She says it should still taste really nice.

Matt loves the passionfruit strawberries and Anna calls her presentation creative. Anna notes however the fact her pavlova has caved in due to lack of cornflower.

Jack has Italian Pavlova and he runs through the differences with an Italian meringue. Matt loves the presentation but not the actual Pavlova softness.

Chandler is next with his ‘Three P’ Parfait which is Pineapple, Passionfruit and Pavlova. Matt loves the presentation, the pineapple, the passionfruit however when it was all mashed up, it wasn’t as crunchy.

Zac has a Chocolate & Raspberry Pavlova which looks delicious. George can see his pavlova sitting in a fine patisserie and George tells him it backs itself up with flavour.

Alysha and Greta are last with Alysha presenting her 50/50 pavlova. Matt says if he had a hat, he’d take it off. He does think it was maybe a bit too sweet.

Last but not least is Greta with a Middle Eastern Pavlova. George wonders why she has put everything to the side of the dish and notes it gives an air for movement. He calls the presentation clever. George tells her it is a knockout and soft, tingling music plays in the background as she gets overwhelming reviews and a round of applause.

Now, to the results.

In third place, earning two points is… Indigo!

In second place, earning four points is… Greta! Wow, that’s a shock. Possibly too big a shock.

In first place, earning six points is… Harry! Hmm, disagree much?

So what does that do to the scoreboard?

GRETA: 35

ZAC: 29

INDIGO: 28

JACK: 26

LILY: 25

HARRY 23

ALYSHA: 17

CHANDLER: 15

That means Greta, Zack, Indigo and Jack are into the top six. That leaves Lily, Harry, Chandler & Alysha as the bottom four. George makes them press a fake reset button before asking them if they are ready for the next challenge…the pressure test!

They all get a recipe, the same ingredients and the same amount of time. Matt then introduces the mastermind of the dish…Guillaume Brahimi. I’ll just call him Gil.

He brings in a cloche, containing the dish I’m guessing. He then goes to lift the lid on the cloche. After the break, he reveals it as the turban of scampi. He tells them that it is simple and chose it because they know they can do it. Is he being serious?

They go to taste and Gil reads out some pressure points. Actually, George just does it for him.

They all think it tastes amazing with Harry threatening to eat it all!

Now it is time to cook! They have a whopping 2 hours and 10 minutes and their time begins. They are all trying to roll the scampi and already Alysha is having trouble. Matt comes to see how she is going and Gil tells her that her scampi is not positioned properly, showing her how to do it. Like a bullet, we only have 60 minutes to go. They are all working on their pasta, except Harry who is onto his mousse. He blends it all together and pastes it on the spaghetti. The judges go to him and he is doing quite well. Gil gives him some tips as he rolls the spaghetti. He is happy with the end result.

Chandler has finished his rolling, but he forgot to tie a knot in the glad wrap which could have ended his dream had he put it in the water. Gil asks what he has written on his hand and we see he has written ‘I am in the zone’ on his hand. We see a back story as he tells us how badly he wants to be in the top six.

They are all chopping away as Harry begins on his sauce. It seems to be a very complex sauce. Lily begins to heat her sauce but forgets to set the timer, now she has no idea how long it has been cooking for.

Anna and George come over where she tells them her dilemma. Anna talks her through what she should look for in a finished sauce.

Alysha is now ready to cook her scampi. Afterwards, she is happy with the cooking and when she unwraps it, it doesn’t look too good as it slips apart. She has another roll which will hopefully work well.

With five minutes to go, Harry is ready to plate up but he rushed with his sauce and Gil thinks it looks too thin. He gets him to reduce it and gives him some tips. Soon enough, their time is up and their dishes are done. Chandler has forgotten a few things, but hopes they will like it all the same.
To judging and Alysha is first up. She enjoyed the day, saying it was fun despite the problems. They send her away as they taste her dish. Anna can’t believe a twelve year old cooked it and Gil says she cooked everything perfectly.

Chandler is next and he says he was in the zone. They then taste his dish. Matt thinks he has done a great job but notes the amount of sauce. Gil notes the rustic look. To the tasting and Matt says it was only the presentation that let it down with the rest of it perfect. To Lily and she is happy with how she went. She wants a top six position so bad.

They taste the dish and Matt gets something undesirable in his mouth. Matt says there was quite a bit of shell but George says the pasta is cooked perfectly and the sauce was great.
Harry is last and he says his family will be proud of him. Gil seems to be worried by the pepper on the top, but overall likes the presentation. They taste it and seem to really enjoy it. Gil says it is well balanced and thinks Harry is a talented young cook. They all think he did well.
So, to the verdict, and they all stand before the judges as triumphant music plays.

Anna then calls out the safe contestants. They are… Harry and… Alysha.

That means both Lily and Chandler (who has had a drop from fame since the start) will be eliminated.

Harry is sad that two of his great friends will be going home and they leave with tears, trophies and lookbacks.

A very well balanced elimination show full of inspirational dishes, shock endings and good production. The only problem is that the elimination seemed a bit rushed. I guess with two people leaving (and I have also noticed this with four people leaving) they have to quickly go through the flashbacks and all that, but they could cut out some more of the cooking. They just seem to be pushed out a revolving door!

Courtney’s Verdict: 9.7/10

Well, it has been a huge year in reality television, and guess what- only one week left of Australia’s biggest history making genre for 2011! But, for all you reality junkies out there never fear, because reality television isn’t bowing out quietly. The final ratings week for 2011 will be a busy week if ever I saw one, and it will probably take the final breaths of your imagination out of you to ease you into a long summer ahead. I know I’m ready for a bit of a break, haha! But of course, with a week to go, this is just an ordinary Reality Highlights segment, so let’s talk reality…as usual!

It was a welcome return to the Junior MasterChef kitchen after the juniors lapped up their final moments in LA on Sunday. But before that, another elimination loomed, as you would expect so close to the final. Here, everyone was a candidate, but people were saved at periodical times throughout the episode. The exceptions to this rule were Steven, Miraede, Madi and Kieran who were eliminated amongst the World of Colour at Disneyland!

Back at home and a double mystery box challenge awaited them, however not everyone took it. Indigo, Harry and Zac did, and the results were mixed. Indigo, who was excited about the double mystery box, which contained offal, actually ended up not impressing the judges as much as everybody else. A second challenge had them fight in a ‘boxing ring’ one on one! No, not proper fighting, but a cook off whereby one person from a team faced off in a 15 minute cooking showdown against someone in the other team. With four people in a team, this meant that there was 60 minutes to create an overall dish which was scored in a blind taste conducted by the judges.

Colin Fassnidge and Miguel Maestro helped out on this one. Then, in a special !!!BONUS!!! episode of Junior MasterChef, contestants were asked to cook a deceitful dish; one that looked savoury, but was rather sweet. Then, after a slumber party held in the MasterChef kitchen (I know! What a cool idea!!!), the contestants woke up to a Christmas themed kitchen…and George dressed up as Santa Clause. Here, they had to unwrap presents containing ingredients and cook a classic Christmas inspired dish.

These episodes were mainly for points with the usuals; Jack, Greta and Zac all earning solid points.

To Celebrity Apprentice and it was a rocky week. The week began with a challenge which saw Pauline trade places with Shane. Here, they had to create a children’s story and play to perform in front of children. With the help of Lara Bingle, Jono Coleman and Catriona Rowntree, it was set to be a breeze…however Lara was definitely a let down. Jason’s job history pretty much secured him a win…until boardroom when it was revealed that he, along with Pauline, hadn’t actually won, sending them into the final elimination. Here, despite dislike from the safe contestants, particularly Jesinta, and clear responsibility for the team’s failure, Jason was saved at the expense of Pauline Hanson who, despite her background, became liked on the show and whose elimination was seen in a negative light. Apparently, the decision was based on her overall performance on the season which while a little unfair, did give good merit for her firing.

To the next challenge, and four contestants came back to help. They were Deni Hines, Max Markson, Polly Porter and Didier Cohen. While Didier and Polly became background support in the challenge which is still ongoing (to conclude in Monday’s final) to come up with an advertising campaign for Yellow Brick Road, Bouris’ company. Deni and Max however, were a different story. Max reverted back to ‘Mad Max’ which did actually help him before he was fired, so could be a blessing now. He continues to stuff up on set, continues to overrun everyone with his loud personality and continues to annoy the living daylights out of everyone! But, he’s a damn sight better than Deni, whose performance is out of control. When blogging Wednesday’s episode, I was thrown a little out of whack with the constant chip chopping of scene and back and forwards motion of scene changes, but also because half the episode saw Deni arguing or making problems for her team. This proved a distraction for me, and I’m thinking you too, because she was going off about NOTHING AT ALL! I was just spending the whole episode looking for evidence of how this was all fabricated, but I do think it was just the real deal; Deni trying to vie for attention by using her negative persona to her advantage. Trust me, Diva, it aint working!

The results of the challenge, as mentioned, will be shown in Monday’s final.

To The X Factor and again, not much to recap here. It was a heightened night of performances, but the results show was the big kicker- involving heavy weights Florence + the Machines, Ed Sheeran and the wonderful Stevie Nicks. Here, it was all up to the Australian public to decide on the three finalists who ended up being Andrew Wishart, Reece Mastin and Johnny Ruffo. Three Wishez were sent home, leaving Ronan actless with Mel. Gosh, all the international star judges…

To The One and Salvatore was eliminated. Despite my scepticism, it was a very interesting episode and at the very least, entertaining. We now decide who wins. See the website for voting numbers and Terms & Conditions.

Beauty & The Geek Australia Rounded off the week with the make up of Lachlan and Jordan, a challenge involving all the geeks painting a portrait to a very talkative naked blonde model and then answering questions on what she said, a fashion runway involving the beauties dressed up in hilarious London-inspired icons, Jimmy’s rejection by Helen (due to her online relationship with a Dutch person) and the re-elimination of Helen & Troy. Wow, I really thought they were going to make it to the final!

So, that’s the week that was- technically semi-final week, really. Next week, it all begins! And in the same right, it all ends as well as all your favourite reality television shows finish up the year and reality television goes on vacation!

To begin the finals week, we have Junior MasterChef, which will eliminate two contestants each night from Sunday to Tuesday to reach the final two. Then, on Wednesday, the final two go head to head for the crown (possibly last ever) of Junior MasterChef.

Celebrity Apprentice Australia however has the first final of the week where on Monday, the challenge ends in what will prove to be a big shocking conclusion most probably thanks to more bad behaviour from Deni Hines which is set to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, so to speak. Then, either Jesinta Campbell, Jason Coleman, Shane Crawford or Julia Morris will be crowned Australia’s first (and it is becoming increasingly likely that they won’t be the last) Celebrity Apprentice.

Monday & Tuesday also spell the end for X Factor season three where either Reece Mastin, Johnny Ruffo or Andrew Wishart will be crowned 2011 winner. These two episodes are two hours in length. Appropriate? Well, for a show that has KYLIE MINOGUE performing both nights, it’s sure to be big!

The One finishes up on Wednesday with either Heidi Hanley, Debbie Malone or Greg Riley being voted BY YOU as 2011’s The One.

Then, it is Reality Television’s Final Night for 2011- Thursday 24 November 2011 which will be marked by the 90 minute conclusion to Beauty & The Geek Australia’s third season. There are still four teams remaining- Jimmy & Mackenzie, Lachlan & Sarah, Jacelle & Gilbert and Julian & Julian however one by one, they will be eliminated after a string of challenges.

And that is how the final week of reality for 2011 will pan out. Next week’s Reality Highlights segment will mark the end with a special Thursday final week recap before a full ‘report’ on the 2011 reality year is published on Friday.

Also don’t forget, the Top 20 Reality Television Stars for 2011 will also be taking place between the 16-31st of December 2011 to crown this year’s Reality Television Star. Who deserved their 15 minutes of fame and then some the most?

That’s all from me tonight, hope to see you all reading along as we enter the finishing stretch!

Celebrity Apprentice fans will have to wait until tomorrow for the blog of the elimination. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Tonight; the contestants will defy obesity and dig into a sweet, chocolate burger before they set up camp in a new MasterChef challenge- the slumber party! What? What the hell does that entail? I dunno! Let’s find out.

The contestants arrive at the kitchen in what will be the final point grab before Sunday’s elimination. George, Matt and Anna are standing there and George tells them that today’s challenge is all about food deception- to make something savoury taste sweet. Harry thinks sugary curry?!

The judges reveal the special guest for tonight, a real life Willy Wonka- Max Brenner.

He is welcomed to the kitchen and is happy to see his ‘Oompa Loompas’. With that, he goes over and lifts the lid on his dish- Biscuit Tuile Nachos. He has two dishes, so when he lifts his second dish, we see a Chocolate Burger.

He tells them that the only thing to do is taste to see if they are sweet or savoury. They taste the Nachos and love them, so it is then onto that scrumptious chocolate burger- the most delicious thing I have ever seen on the show!

Matt tells them that this challenge will make them create a ‘savoury’ dish that is actually sweet. The top three dishes will be awarded the top three points. They have 80 minutes on this one, and their time begins.

They rush to the pantry to grab their stuff and Lily already has an idea together. Jack is thinking of a miniature cake. On the way out, Chandler is a gentleman, helping Indigo with her groceries.

Back at the benches and Max and George go to look at Alysha’s sweet sushi invention.

Zac will be doing a meat pie and sauce, with Ganache as the filling, yum!

Indigo will be doing meat and three veg. Peas, corn and carrot will be made out of marzipan.

They go to Lily and are amazed by her little chocolate spring rolls. Max has something similar on his menu, so wonders if she can make it better.

Alysha is rolling her sushi and George asks her to taste her rice which is a bit crunchy and she calls it disgusting. Oh dear, stuff up one!

Alysha puts some rice back in the pan to cook again, hoping for the best. Indigo is working on the apple which will be used as the bone on her meat. Her actual meat idea, made out of bread and chocolate sounds great!

The judges are amazed already at the children’s very grown up ideas and take on this deception task.

Chandler, who is quite a ladies man, tastes some of Lily’s chocolate.

Alysha is running out of time, so George gets her to make a risotto instead of sushi.

Plating begins and Indigo’s steak meat looks amazingly lifelike.

Jack realises he and Harry has done the same thing. Soon enough; time is up and some of them look really nice, like Chandler’s pizza.

Now, time for tasting. The first two to come up are Jack and Alysha. Jack has Spaghetti and Meatballs which looks very creative.

Matt tells him that his meatballs (made out of chockie) knocked his socks off. Max congratulates him. It is then time for Alysha’s fruit risotto.

It doesn’t look like a risotto in my books.

Max thinks it looks beautiful and tells her it is delicious.

Next up are Harry and Greta. Harry also has Spaghetti and Meatballs but his looks more lifelike. Anna has one question, why didn’t he make his own meatballs. Oh, did he use Jack’s? Other than that, Anna loved the dish.

Greta has lasagne which looks small, but seems to pack a lot in. It does look savoury however Max doesn’t think it tricked him however he thinks it was delicious.

Zac and Indigo are next and they love them both. Zac has Meat Pie and Ketchup and it looks as lifelike as you can get. It is Max’s first time trying ‘meat’ which is actually fudge.

To Indigo and she has meat and four veg. George wonders how she cooked the lamb. Medium, for the record.

George tells them that there is a problem; it is deception at its finest, but is there flavour? Probably, considering we are going to an ad break!

Max tells her that it tastes ‘so, so good’, saying it could be in a lamb restaurant.

Lily and Chandler are next and Chandler has a Banana Split Brownie Pizza. To me, it doesn’t look deceptive as Max says, but it is delicious. Lily’s Spring Rolls are next and will they be better than Max’s?

Matt doesn’t know if it was deceptive enough but Max thinks it was more deceptive than his. He says that he would have liked some dipping sauce.

So, who wins points?

Coming in third, earning two points is… Jack!

Coming in second, earning four points is… Zac!

Coming in first, earning six points is… Indigo!

Max thanks them for the unbelievable challenge and the kids thank him out of the kitchen!

George tells them that there are plenty more points up for grabs, but because of their hard work today, George tells them he has organized a SLUMBER PARTY! The first ever for MasterChef, they head upstairs for a pillow fight, wondering if they will get much sleep.

The next morning, the kids are asleep when they here a jingle, they look over the balcony to see the kitchen draped in Christmas attire. George is hilarious, donned in a Santa Clause outfit. He is even more so when he starts to talk.

The beard is getting in his mouth hahaha, which gives it all away.

Matt tells them that Santa has come early with a handful of presents waiting for them under the tree.

Matt tells them that they are looking for an ingredient to add spark to a dish. Lily likes this idea and we see a back story of her. He tells them to keep unwrapping until they find an ingredient to help them. Zac finds chocolate and Chandler finds strawberry.

Harry gets Mixed peel which sparks memories for him. Caviar is in Greta’s, but she doesn’t like it. She keeps unwrapping until she fins the last present. What is inside, will she like it?

She gets mushrooms and she is so happy. Indigo finds a mango and Jack has raspberries. Lily has redcurrant Jelly. George is still in his Santa outfit when he ho hos out of there.

They will have 80 minutes to create a really nice Christmas dish and their time begins. Can they match the pantry ingredients with their ingredient?

Jack has some sort of pudding in the works with Chandler working on a platter.

Lily has pulled out a huge ham- how the hell will she be able to cut that with the provided knives?

Cooking is on when Matt goes to Zac who is doing a Yule cake. Apparently, he stole it off his grandma.

With an hour to go, Chandler is already well underway with his seafood platter. The judges wonder how he will incorporate the strawberries into the platter and he just says ‘presentation’. George, wanting more, tells him he needs to incorporate it better and says it can be done.

Greta will be doing Mushroom tarts with some other things and she can’t wait to see if the judges like it. Can she pull it all off?

Chandler is cutting his strawberries up to add to his seafood sauce. It is an experiment and he hopes it all works out.

Greta is also working on her sauce and she isn’t measuring. Too much has gone in and she gets George to taste it. What is his verdict?

He says it is quite peppery, but he tries to fix it by adding salt and lemon. Will it work?

Well, only 30 minutes remain so hopefully it is good. It is still too peppery, so she just changes the dish name to peppered mushroom charts.

The judges discuss the challenge and they love the challenge, thinking the dishes look great. Anna discusses Lily’s ham idea however Matt is interested in Jack and Zac’s Yule rolls. In the end, they know the contestant’s are after points.

Lily is working on her mayonnaise and she has 10 minutes to go. Plating up should be starting. Jack takes his cake out and onto the stove which was on, burning the underside of the cake. He thinks it is just one side so it will be OK, glazing chocolate over it. I don’t think that will cut it.

Soon enough, time is up with a bit of help from the judges to finish it off! A round of relief runs through the kitchen.

With that, a very festive desk sits before the judges as they choose Harry and Lily to present first. Lilly tells them about the glazed ham they are about to enjoy. Anna tells Lily she has prepared the most beautiful ham and Matt says her salad is to die for.

Harry has Fruit Mince Pies and George tells him the bottoms are not cooked enough, still commending the innards.
Next up is Jack with his Chocolate Yule Cake. The judges cut the burnt end of the dish and he tries to explain himself but Matt tells him that while the good end tastes superb, the bad end had a burnt tinge all the way through.

Indigo has a Queensland Christmas Seafood Platter and at this point I realise ‘yes, she does look like a Queenslander, what with her hippy fashion sense and surfer hairdo’.

George tells her that the negative would be the Oyster jelly was a bit too stiff.

Next is Alysha and her Christmas Truffle Cake. Anna says it looks naughty but nice. George says it is very sweet but says that is what Christmas is all about.

Greta has a Christmas Tapas Plate for them. Matt tells her that he actually likes her peppery mushroom tart. He loves the overall dish.

They get Alysha and Greta to come up and pull some crackers which George wins but hesitantly gives the girls the prize.

Chandler is next with his seafood platter. Will his strawberries shine through?

George scrunches his face up…oh dear!

They tell him the sauce works with Matt telling him the lobster was a bit overcooked. Zac has Chocolate Yule Cake. They taste it and Matt tells him that his cake is being indulgent and loves the texture and the oozy chocolate on the inside. He LOVES it!

To share, he gets the other kids to eat a bit of Zac’s chocolate cake- yep, he’s won!

So, who has one?
In third place, earning two points is… Lily.

In second place, earning four points is… Zac. Oh wow.

In first place, earning six points is… Greta!
So what does the scoreboard look like?

GRETA: 31

ZAC: 28

INDIGO: 26

JACK: 25

LILY: 23

HARRY: 17

ALYSHA: 16

CHANDLER: 14

George then tells them that at the start of next week, only six will remain and Chandler vows to get back up to the top!

The episode ends and hats off to them for that one! That was magical! The whole Christmas theme may have been a bit too early, and if you would have done what they did just then in 2009 when this show started, I would have said ‘that’s going too far’, but today, I think it was lovely. Maybe George in a Santa’s outfit is a bit damaging to the serious credibility this show has, but I still think it was a nice touch.

The challenges were brilliant and inspiring and the production blew me away with that introduction to the Christmas themed kitchen a real movie scene quality image. Well done there- hope this show gets a few more viewers than last night!

Courtney’s Verdict: 9.8/10
