Some parts of the structures contain valuable components that must be extracted carefully, while other sections can be smashed up or blown to bits. There are also toxic materials, from asbestos to highly corrosive chemicals, that make this process extremely dangerous. Hazards abound, and one false move could cost a worker an arm, a leg – or his life. Megastructure Breakdown explores the complicated mechanical processes that get the job done.
