A new television series from the highly successful producers of Underbelly and Crownies will be made in NSW, Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Hospitality, Racing and the Arts, George Souris, announced.

Mr Souris made the announcement last night at the annual Screen Producers Association of Australia Conference (SPAA) in Sydney – the largest screen industry event in the country attracting more than 600 professionals.

Mr Souris said Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms – which will tell the story behind the 1984 Milperra bikie massacre – will film in Sydney later this year.

“This Government is serious about its commitment to the screen industry,” he said.

“This series will be made in NSW as a result of funding through the Screen NSW Production Fund.

“The latest investments by the Fund will also see four factual series and a highly original feature film being made in NSW.

“A total of $585,000 is being invested in these six productions, which are expected to contribute $10.7 million to the NSW economy in direct production expenditure.

“In addition to the Production Investment Fund, Screen NSW has also granted $180,000 across six projects to the latest recipients of its Emerging Filmmakers Fund (EFF). This highly successful program funds the production of short films, often a critical step in the career development of our State’s filmmakers.

“Since 1996 more than $3 million in support has been granted to 136 NSW film crews and their projects. Their films have been viewed in more than 1000 local and international festival screenings, including Cannes, Los Angeles, Berlin, London, Tokyo, New York, and Barcelona, and have received over 200 awards and nominations.

“This year alone, EFF films have screened in almost 60 festivals worldwide. I’m sure the six new short films that have been funded will be equally successful when they are screened publicly in 2012 and will herald bright future careers for the filmmakers.”

In more good news for the local screen industry, Mr Souris also announced that Screen NSW has appointed a panel of service providers to deliver a screen production attraction, facilitation and local industry development service across regional NSW.

The five Regional Screen Offices are Screen Illawarra South East, Screen Hunter Central Coast, Screen Central NSW & Western Sydney, Northern Rivers Screenworks and Film Broken Hill.

“Regional Screen Offices (RSOs) play a critical role in ensuring regional NSW enjoys the cultural and economic benefits of screen production in our State,” Mr Souris said.

“They also work with local, state and federal agencies to provide an invaluable one-stop-shop for filmmakers looking to shoot in regional locations.”

Mr Souris also highlighted the NSW Government’s support of film industry relatedevents including the SPAA Conference.

“Listed alongside the SPAA Conference on the NSW Events Calendar, developed by Destination NSW, are the ACCTA Awards, Sydney Film Festival, Movie Extra Tropfest, Dungog Film Festival and the IF Awards,” Mr Souris said.

“The NSW Government through Destination NSW is committed to a creative industries strategy that ensures we are recognised globally as world leaders of creativity and innovation.

“Through our State screen agency, Screen NSW, we continue to invest in the development and production of local projects.

“This financial year to date, $2.25 million has been invested in 14 screen projects, which will generate $33.94 million expenditure in NSW over the coming months.”

The groundbreaking ABC TV series, REDERN NOW (working title), the first contemporary drama series produced by Indigenous Australians, will create over 250 job opportunities and make a vibrant and exciting contribution to the Australian television industry.

The series, which is set to start filming in Sydney in early 2012 and will air later that year, will employ Indigenous Australians in various roles from producers, directors, writers, actors to production and post-production staff.

REDFERN NOW (working title) will be produced by Blackfella Films (First Australians, The Tall Man), in collaboration with award-winning and internationally acclaimed creator Jimmy McGovern (The Street, Cracker, The Lakes), who is currently working with the writers on scripts.

ABC TV’s Indigenous Department, in partnership with the Indigenous Department of Screen Australia and Screen NSW is leading the way with this landmark series, which tells the explosive and dramatic stories of six households in Redfern. Nestled in the heart of Sydney, Redfern is one of Australia’s most famous suburbs – an area full of contradictions; Aboriginal icon, centre of black struggle, and a real estate goldmine.

Sally Riley, Head of ABC TV’s Indigenous Department said; “REDFERN NOW is a turning point in the Australian television industry. We are providing the finance and infrastructure for real career opportunities for creative Indigenous Australians, which is very exciting. This contribution to the industry will hopefully have an amazing impact for years to come. ”

Erica Glynn, Head of Screen Australia’s Indigenous Department said; “The series will provide an opportunity for Indigenous Australians to tell their contemporary, urban stories on our small screen for the first time – and that is a significant cultural turning point as well.”

Jimmy McGovern, who came to Australia earlier this year for a series of workshops with the writers said; “We’ve all been working hard on the scripts and this is a wonderful reward for our efforts. I think it’s going to be a brilliant series.”

Darren Dale from Blackfella Films said, ”As Samson & Delilah and Bran Nue Dae created excitement for Australian cinema, I am positive that REDFERN NOW will be a bold and adventurous television series.”

Cast and directors will be announced at a later stage.

$22.5 million of new NSW film and television production was announced today by Screen NSW.

Two new television series, three telemovies, a feature film and two factual programs are to be made in NSW following the most recent investment decisions by the Screen NSW Board.

“The Government’s investment of $1.66 million in these eight projects will result in production expenditure of $22.5 million in NSW,” said Tania Chambers, Chief Executive of Screen NSW.

“Significant among these projects is Redfern Now, an outstanding drama series written, directed and produced by Indigenous Australians, and the second series of the hugely entertaining and successful television drama Rake.”

Ms Chambers said that the productions will see some of the NSW’s most celebrated creative talent working in the State, including actor Richard Roxburgh, Director Peter Duncan, Producers of the recent ratings phenomenon Go Back to Where You Came From, Bran Nue Dae Director Rachel Perkins, First Australians Producer Darren Dale and leading production company Southern Star.

“This is great news for the NSW economy, with screen productions attracting significant direct investment in our State and jobs for our highly skilled film and television professionals,” Ms Chambers said.

“Coming on top of the recent news that the major international production Paradise Lost has been secured for the State and that The Great Gatsby begins filming in Sydney very soon, the NSW screen industry is sustaining its reputation as Australia’s Number One production destination.”

Twenty new Australian films and television programs have been secured for NSW, including new productions by Academy Award winners Jane Campion and Emile Sherman, Minister for the Arts, George Souris, announced at the opening of the Sydney Film Festival tonight.

“The Government’s investment of $4.2 million in these 20 projects will result in production expenditure of $66 million in NSW. The productions will generate hundreds of jobs and see some of our top film and television creators, cast and crew working in NSW,” Mr Souris said.

Mr Souris said that the 20 projects included seven feature films, two television series, two children’s animated television series and eight documentary programs/series, providing a range of employment opportunities across the industry.

Mr Souris pointed out that the announcement of these new productions coincided with news of several high profile screenings of films from NSW at the upcoming Sydney Film Festival, Australia’s premier film festival.

“Two films backed by the NSW Government through the Screen NSW production investment fund are competing at this year’s Sydney Film Festival – Ivan Sen’s Toomelah and Julia Leigh’s Sleeping Beauty – both of which have also been acclaimed at the recent Cannes International Film Festival,” Mr Souris said.

“The other NSW films screening at the Festival include 33 Postcards, the first official co-production between NSW and China; I’m Not Dead Yet, the story of country music legend Chad Morgan and the powerful documentaries Hungry Tide, Dancing With Dictators, Scarlet Road and A Common Purpose.

“The latest funding by the NSW Government brings the total investment through the Screen NSW Production Investment Fund in the 2010/2011 financial year to $9.6 million across 48 film, television and cross-platform productions.

The total expenditure in NSW across these projects will total $143 million, money injected directly into the NSW economy.

“The Screen NSW Production Investment program is great value, with every dollar invested by the NSW Government generating around $15 in direct production expenditure into the State,” Minister Souris said.

“It’s fantastic that some of our State’s most creative talents are involved with these new film and television programs, including Academy-Award winners Emile Sherman and Jane Campion and Indigenous directors Wayne Blair and Catriona McKenzie, who will be making their feature film directorial debuts.”
