For another year, Rage Goes Retro is back on Saturday nights in January.

Rage goes retro brings you a full night of music from the past, old music based shows seen on ABC and rare interviews and moments. Shows include the legendary COUNT DOWN, Flashez, Rock Arena, Recovery, 10.30 Slot and more.

Rage Goes Retro shows FULL episodes of the shows – not just clips or snip-its as is the case elsewhere.

The play list for each weekend is posted on the Rage website www.abc.net.au/rage each Friday afternoon around 3pm eastern.

This year, Rage Goes Retro actually started last Saturday, January 1, 2011 and continues on Jan 8, Jan 15, Jan 22 and Jan 29, 2011.

Last Saturday night included Countdown from Sept 1980, Dig we Must from 1966, Countdown 10th Anniversary from 1984, Renee Gayer Live at the 1975 Music Industry Awards, Rock Arena with the Kinks Live from 1982 and The 10.30 Slot from 1999. In between was music from Roy Orbison, the Models, The Rolling Stones, Diana Ross and The B-52’s.

This Saturday promises three episodes of Countdown, featuring interviews with Rod Stewart, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, performances by La Femme and Uncanny X Men as well as heaps of amazing clips. There will also be an episode of Hurricane from 1970 and some Recovery from 1997.

Retro highlights are on ABC1 at 10.00am Saturday morning, with the full show from 12.10am Saturday night on ABC1.

It’s back! After the huge success of the first ever Rage FIFTY last year, Rage viewers are once again getting the chance to vote for their absolute favourite video clips of 2010.

Last year, Aussie bands ruled supreme with Karnivool in third place, Art vs Science in second, and the hilarious ‘Broken Leg’ by Bluejuice taking out the number one spot!

Rage has had another huge year, receiving almost two thousand new video clips from all over the world, and now’s the chance for viewers to choose which ones have had them tuning in, freaking out, awed, inspired or simply jumping around the room dancing!

From Saturday 13th November viewers can vote at abc.net.au/rage, and on Saturday 25th December rage will count down the year’s fifty most popular music videos as chosen by its devoted audience. Which videos will make the cut this year?

Join in the celebration from the show that’s had you covered with all things music video for over two decades.

Voting closes at midnight on Tuesday 14th December.

The Rage FIFTY 2010 will screen on ABC1 on Saturday 25th December as all is revealed live. There’s your post Christmas day feast relaxation sorted!

In the fourth and final week of Rage Goes Retro in 2010, the first hour is a one hour special on 2000’s Big Day Out, but after that it’s a feast of mid to late 70’s with five Flashez shows from that time as well as songs from the era.

The first of the three Countdowns for the night comes from July 1979. Two more follow soon after, one from October 1982 and the third and final from March 20, 1983. Ganggajang fans can see (again) the Nov 1985 Rock Arena special on the band after 5am.

It’s week 3 of Rage goes retro, this week featuring Recovery with the best of 1998 (I can’t believe 1998 is considered Retro already!!), followed by an assortment of music and shows from the mid 70’s to early 80’s.

This week, there are three Countdown episodes. The 1st at around 2am comes from a time when a music video was rare and most songs were performed “live” (or I should say mimed) in studio or played with Countdown dancers bopping away to them – July 3rd, 1977. The next Countdown episode in June 27, 1982 and the 3rd August 14th 1983. A GTK segment with Split Enz from 1975 is there in the mix as well as Flashez interviews with Little River Band in 1977, Alice Cooper in 1976 and David Cassidy also in 1976.

Rage airs on ABC1 from 11.18pm Sat Jan 16. Note that if you are recording from an EPG, be sure to add in the 5am and 6am splits in the program schedule to ensure you don’t miss anything.

Countdown season is upon us again! And no, I am not referring to the barrage of “best of the year” lists and reflection over the past year stories that typically fill our media this time of year! Countdown season is that one month that ABC’s Rage goes retro playing old Countdown episodes in their entirety, unedited, as they were when they originally aired.

For those who do not know, long before iTunes, iPods, 24 hour music channels and the internet, Countdown was the staple music show for tweens, teens, and the young at heart running from late 1974 to May 1987 usually airing at 6pm Sunday nights with a repeat on Saturdays on the ABC. Fittingly, Europe’s hit “The Final Countdown” closed the final ever episode in May 1987.

Hosted by Molly Meldrum, the show played all the hits of the time, introduced new songs, had “live” performances, interviews and counted down the top ten of the week as well as highlighting the “chart Busters” – songs which were racing up the chart. Famous Molly Meldrum quips like “Do yourself a favour” and “this is going to be number one” originated from Countdown. The show was also responsible for breaking many artists that otherwise would not have been given a look in, considering the fussy conservative play lists of radio stations of the day.

For almost as long as Countdown’s run itself – almost 13 years, Rage has been playing out Countdown episodes on Saturday nights in January, and 2010 will be no exception with “Rage Goes Retro” nights planned for January 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd 2010. Rage itself has been on air since late 1987, with the retro nights running on Saturdays in January from 1999.

But it is not just Countdown. Other shows like Countdown Revolution – the ill-fated replacement for Countdown which itself disappeared in 1990, GTK – a music show from the black and white early 70’s pre-dating Countdown, Rock Arena – a mostly rock oriented show from the mid 80’s that would highlight a few artists each week, and Recovery – an ABC music show from the mid-late 90’s all get a look in during “Rage goes Retro”.

Coupled with retro music videos, retro artist music blocks and selected clips from ABC’s retro music show library, Rage’s Retro January Saturdays will bring back memories for those who were here to see them all first time round. And those who weren’t, an interesting – possibly humorous look at what your parents were probably into.

Rage Goes Retro airs on ABC1 late night Saturday Jan 2, Jan 9, Jan 16 and Jan 23 2010. Check the Rage web site late Friday afternoons preceding each Saturday for play list details as well as your local TV guides for the time Rage starts each night. The Rage website also features play lists for every show since January 1998.
