RPA

Wednesday October 10 at 7.30pm on BIO

For over 16 years, we’ve gained an intimate and, at times, incredibly moving insight into the stories behind the frenetic emergency department, hushed operating theatres and bustling wards at one of Australia’s leading public hospitals, Royal Prince Alfred in Sydney. After so many years that have seen drastic changes in healthcare and technology, RPA is still taking viewers bedside for some of the most emotional stories on Australian television.

Sunday night features Reach Out with performances by The Voice Australia contestants. At this stage, The Voice US continues at 7pm Monday – Wednesday, with blind auditions Monday and Tuesday, and then moving into battle rounds from Wednesday. I say at this stage, because this will change if the show does not rate well in its first week – the first episode Monday July 9 was watched by just 669,000 – less than repeats of Big Bang on Nine. While The Voice is on Nine, Big Bang fans can see eps on GO! at 7pm Mon-Wed. Continue reading »

Nine programming pretty well routine now – with the exception of Wednesday night which sees RPA return at 9.30pm after a repeat of The Mentalist (why not put RPA at 8.30?).

Nine’s award-winning medical program, RPA, returns for another captivating series on Wednesday, May 30, at 9.30pm with more touching stories of courageous patients being treated by the dedicated staff at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.

In the first program we meet Sylvia, a seven-year-old girl from Africa whose story we will follow throughout the series. We also meet three new patients each facing a life-changing medical condition. Continue reading »

This week Foxtel will show favourites such as LA Law, Privete Practice Season 2 and Law & Order Season 20, while premiering America’s Next Top Model All Stars and Come Dine With Me Canada. Here are this week’s premieres on Foxtel. Continue reading »

Wednesday, September 21, at 8.30pm on Nine

Channel Nine will present another 90-minute RPA special next Wednesday night at 9.30pm when six brave patients share their real-life medical stories at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.

Con

Con has two skin cancers. The one on his cheek is quite small but he has neglected the other one for 14 years and it has eaten away the back of his head. He realises now that it could kill him if left untreated. Tonight he is told he will have to endure 14 hours of surgery to remove it.

Deidrie

Deidrie has just been told she has an eight-centimetre mass on her pancreas and needs major surgery to have it removed so doctors can find out what it is.

Bill

Breathlessness has given Bill, an artist, a big wake-up call. He blames the things he did in his teens for a failing heart in his 60s. Doctors intend to complete heart surgery on him to repair the damage but things don’t quite go as planned.

Melinda

An awkward move on the basketball court 20 years ago has come back to haunt Melinda, 38. The mother of two active boys now requires reconstructive surgery to get mobile again.

Thelo

Little Thelo is brought into Emergency after falling over at day care and hitting his head. He needs a few stitches before he is allowed to go home. But nothing is done until this inquisitive three-year-old has asked a lot of questions.

The RPA series is narrated by Australian actor and artist, Max Cullen.

Another day, another network, another night of programming amended.

This time, Nine re-arrange their second worst weeknight of the week – Wednesday.

Oceaan Giants remains at 7.30pm this Wed Sept 14 with the final of its short series to air next Wednesday Sept 21.

At 8.30 this Wednesday (Sept 14), RPA moves forward to 8.30pm with a 90 minute special. It replaces The Mentalist repeat that was to air at that time. On some Wednesdays recently, RPA at 9.30 has rated better than the Mentalist 8.30 and the 7.30 program (notably the week Same Name aired).

At 10.00 is Where Are They Now, featuring Gwyneth Paltrow – a new episode. Embarrassing Bodies follows at 11.00pm.

Next week’s Monday movie is Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.

At this stage a similar change has not been made for next Wednesday Sept 21 – but is likely to happen closer to the date.

Nine are now heavily promoting new Two and a Half Men which is set to air at 8.30pm, Tuesday September 20. This will be the much anticipated first episode of the new season without Charlie Sheen and with Ashton Kutcher filling Sheen’s void.

New Two and a Half Men will be followed by the premiere of new locally produced comedy series The Joy of Sets which is another TV based comedy show involving Ed Kavelee. While I am tempted to say “it won’t work”, based on the (lack of) success of anything comedy Nine have done this year, as well as similar shows in past years, The Joy of Sets could maybe become the exception. It airs at 9pm Tuesday Sept 20.

That will be followed by The Roast of Charlie Sheen at 9.30pm that night.

Looking at the rest of that week on Nine, the network are yet to decide what to air at 9.30pm Sunday Sept 19, with two hours of TBA currently slated at that time.

On Monday night (Sept 19), at 8.30pm will be the movie Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. Whether this remains in that timeslot will depend how this week’s movie “The Ugly Truth” (which airs 8.30pm Monday Sept 12) does in ratings.

To Tuesday night, prior to NEW Two and a Half Men at 8.30pm, is an hour of repeat Two and a Half Men from 7.30pm. Perhaps the idea here is to wet the viewers’ appetite for the new one, but honestly – my concern is that the new one will be lost in a sea of reteats and the result will be the new episode at 8.30pm won’t do anywhere near as well as it could have in ratings.

Wednesday night – Nine’s equally troubled night as Tuesdays sees the final in the Ocean Giants series air ay 7.30pm. A Mentalist repeat airs at 8.30pm, then new RPA at 9.30pm. UPDATED – NOTE: Although Nine have now changed Wed Sept 14 moving RPA to 8.30 and Where Are They Now in at 10pm, they have not yet issued an amendment for Wed Sept 21.

Thursday night (Sept 22), and Big Bang repeats fill 7pm – 8.30pm, while, in the US, the season 5 premiere of NEW Big Bang Theory airs on this night their time. Will Nine fast track and get new Big Bang on the following week? We hope so!

On Friday (Sept 23), NRL (NRL markets, plus VIC if the Storm are still in the comp and playing that night) will see the NRL preliminary final no.1 at 7.30pm, followed byThe Rugby World Cup 2011 at 9.45pm in which Australia play the USA (should be on GEM in non-NRL markets). Should be a shoe-in for the Wallabies!

As mentioned in the Ten programming post for the week Sept 18-24, I will soon be posting a tally of which Australian network is doing the best with fast tracking as the new US season takes off from Sept 19 their time.

So far Nine and Ten are equal with one each. Nine have Two and a Half Men, Ten have Glee. As for Seven, they are almost overflowing with content that fast tracking hardly seems necessary for them. Besides – Seven have well and truly won the 2011 ratings year in any case.

Programming news for the week September 25-October 1 will be very interesting! Monday September 26 for Nine will be especially interesting, as it is obvious that the movies on Monday nights now are a temporary programming measure.

Will we see new Mentalist at 8.30pm Monday Sept 26?

Wednesday, September 7, at 9.30pm on Nine

RPA continues with four more stories of extraordinary patients and their amazing medical teams at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital next Wednesday at 9.30pm on Channel Nine.

In this episode of the award-winning medical reality program we revisit Renee, who has turned to her husband for help for a new liver. We also meet three new inspirational patients with stories of strength and bravery.

Gemma

Gemma’s liver is failing but instead of waiting for a deceased donor liver she is turning to her husband Stephen for help. The live donor operation involves the removal of part of Stephen’s liver and transplanting it into Gemma. It will be only the second such delicate operation performed in Australia. In part two of her story, Gemma and Stephen say goodbye to their daughters, knowing the risks involved in going ahead with the surgery.

Max

Swimming pool builder Max, 24, arrives in Emergency after an accident with a circular saw almost severed a toe. Can the doctors save it?

Ruby

Ruby desperately wants another child but is having difficulty falling pregnant. At 35, her doctor suspects age is against her but she could also be suffering from endometriosis. Only surgery will confirm their suspicions.

Bill

Truckie Bill’s 20-year smoking habit is blamed for his inability to walk for more than 20 metres due to excruciating pain in his left leg. Doctors have found a large clot in his femoral artery and it will need to be cleared to save Bill’s leg.

Wednesday, August 24, at 8.30pm on Nine

Nine’s award-winning medical program, RPA, continues next Wednesday at 8.30pm with more captivating stories of courageous patients being treated by the dedicated staff at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.

In part two of proud grandfather Harvey’s story, surgery to remove cancer at the base of his brain proves to be much more challenging than expected. We also meet three new patients who share their life-changing medical stories.

Harvey

Harvey, 73, was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2006 and it has spread. Scans have revealed the cancer is now at the base of his brain. In part two of his incredible story the surgery to remove it is proving much more difficult than anticipated.

Tori

Tori, 17, plays representative touch football but an injury to her knee is threatening to keep her on the sidelines for some time. A visit to an orthopaedic surgeon confirms her fears: she needs major surgery to repair the damage.

Kevin

Increasing breathlessness has led 50-year-old Irishman Kevin to visit a cardiologist. Four years ago he had his mitral valve replaced and now it needs repairing. Doctors hope to do it with a minimally invasive technique.

Bao

An ulcer on Bao’s tongue turns out to be a squamous cell cancer and the table tennis enthusiast faces major surgery to remove it. Her case is unusual because she doesn’t drink or smoke – two of the biggest causes of this kind of cancer.

The RPA series is narrated by Australian actor and artist, Max Cullen.
