Will John wake up.

John has been diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus and so far he’s endured chemotherapy and a massive operation to remove the cancer. In part three of his extraordinary fight for survival, John’s partner Lyn is still waiting for him to wake up after doctors have warned he may not survive.

Sarina’s choice Sarina is twenty-four weeks pregnant with her second child but a potentially lethal cocktail of blood types has put her unborn baby at risk. The complications mean her baby is most likely to become severely anaemic and won’t survive without a series of blood transfusions. Trouble is those procedures could have fatal consequences.

Too close for comfort Twenty-two year old Ahmad is hit by a taxi while crossing the road. He is taken by ambulance to Emergency where doctors need to find out the extent of the damage. They suspect internal injuries but Ahmad’s hoping he’s had a lucky escape.

June’s painful jaw June has been nursing a broken jaw for the past three years! Deterioration of her jaw bone is the result of radiation therapy she received after the removal of a skin cancer. Her only option now is surgery but trying to repair it could spell disaster.

Acclaimed actor Max Cullen narrates Nine’s medical reality series RPA, which follows the stories of brave patients being treated by dedicated surgeons, doctors and nurses at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.

This week on RPA at 8.30pm Wednesday, March 24, the story continues for John who is fighting for his life after complications from surgery. Doctors fear the worst and the last rites have been read.

Will John wake up?

John’s partner, Lyn, is by his side praying for him to wake up after doctors warn her that he may not survive.

Sarina’s choice:

June has been nursing a painful broken jaw for three years. Her jaw bone deteriorated after radiation therapy to remove a skin cancer on her lip. Her only option now is surgery to replace the dead part of her jaw bone with bone from her leg. But this is an operation that could spell disaster.

John’s fight for life John has been diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus and so far he’s endured chemotherapy and a massive operation that removed the cancer along with a part of his stomach. In part two of John’s story, his condition rapidly deteriorates and doctors are trying desperately to stop his downhill spiral.

Talya under pressure…

Eighteen year old Talya is being plagued by nasty headaches, weakness and fainting spells and doctors have diagnosed an unusually large cyst in her brain. The cyst has been putting too much pressure on her brain causing her symptoms. The student nurse will need surgery to fix the problem but that comes with its own set of risks and she discovers that things don’t always go to plan.

Irene’s worn out knee…

Artist Irene is passionate about her African drumming but her left knee is giving her so much grief she finds it all too painful. Doctors reveal the half knee replacement she had fourteen years ago has well and truly worn out and she now needs a total knee replacement.

All stitched up ..

Jade has turned up at the Emergency Department with the needle from her sewing machine firmly lodged in her index finger. Doctors need to make sure it hasn’t gone through the bone before they decide the best way to remove it.

Fiona’s first hurdle Twenty-eight year old Fiona has had to postpone her wedding to deal with a nasty bone cancer in her hip. In tonight’s episode she endures a marathon operation which involves removing her pelvis, blasting it with an extremely high dose of radiation, then putting it back. She also has to have a total hip replacement. And the real test of the surgery’s success is yet to come.

Abeer’s racing heart Mum to three young children, Abeer has been suffering from heart palpitations and a routine check has revealed a tumour on her adrenal gland. Tumours in this area can cause a fatal stroke and often go undiagnosed until it is too late. Abeer is lucky so far but the surgery is still risky.

Sam’s big surprise in jeopardy Ten year old Sam has arrived in Emergency with a suspected broken collarbone after a fall in the playground. The biggest concern is if he will be well enough to enjoy the big surprise his parents have in store for him.

Big trouble for Marion Marion needs to have life saving surgery on her oesophagus but before she can have that surgery doctors need to fix a faulty valve in her heart. Trouble is they don’t think the seventy-five year old grandmother will survive two rounds of open chest surgery. They are hoping some incredible new technology will be the answer.

Wednesday, March 3, at 8.30pm on Nine

Nine’s award-winning medical reality series, RPA, takes viewers inside one of Australia’s leading public hospitals to follow the dedicated medical teams battling to save the lives of everyday people.

In the next episode of RPA, narrated by Australian actor and artist Max Cullen, four brave patients aged from 10 to 75 put their lives in the hands of the remarkable specialists at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Continuing on from last week is the story of Fiona, 28, who had to postpone her wedding after receiving the news that she has a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer in her hip.

Fiona’s courage:
Tonight Fiona endures a marathon operation to remove and replace her pelvis after it is blasted with an extremely high dose of radiation. During the surgery she also has a total hip replacement. But the real test of success for this double operation is yet to come.

He is sixteen now and his remarkable journey continues as he prepares for another trip to Australia for life changing surgery.

A first for Harry When Harry came off his motorbike at high speed back in 1995, he was the first ever Emergency case to be filmed for the RPA series. At the time he had suspected spinal injuries. Fifteen years down the track, he reveals the amazing story of what happened to him before and after that trip to Emergency.

Elizabeth’s struggle Thirty-six year old Elizabeth is struggling to breathe and a scan reveals an extra large thyroid is pressing on her trachea restricting her airway to 4mm. She is sent to Professor Chris O’Brien to have her thyroid removed. Four years on Elizabeth thanks the late Professor for saving her life.

Adelaide’s knee Eleven year old Adelaide is taken to Emergency after a fall at school. Her knee is badly scraped but it is the needle that bothers her. Nine years on Adelaide is all grown up but still has vivid memories of that needle.

Lifehouse – The Chris O’Brien Cancer Centre The late Professor Chris O’Brien’s dream of an integrated cancer centre is fast becoming a reality. Since his death earlier this year friends, family and former colleagues have kept his dream very much alive.

Elizabeth Back in 1999 she suffered excruciating pain, and was admitted to RPA. She needed to have her Gallstones & Gallbladder removed.

Fully recovered and feeling fine, she now lives with & happily cares for her 96 year old mother.

Jay Last year Jay started going to the Gym & Solarium because he wanted to look fit & healthy for his upcoming wedding. It was during this time that he noticed the mole on his ankle getting bigger. A biopsy revealed Melanoma. Jay was devastated when he was told this could be life threatening.

He is now married and has recently a baby with his partner Janine. He actively petitions against the use of solariums and strongly promotes sun safety. He continues to see specialists at RPA every 3 months. There is a 65% chance it will return.

Allan In 2007, Allan, a jockey had a bad fall at Canterbury races. He was transferred by ambulance to Emergency at RPA. He suffered laceration to the head, concussion and was required to wear a neck brace for 3 months on release. A real Aussie larrikin he proved a hard man to keep down.

He is now back racing, and jokes that he never wants his kids to ride horses.

(*Note – Allan has appeared regularly on the Footy Show doing a jockey vox pop segment) Alison In 2006 at 26 weeks pregnant Alison’s twin girls were diagnosed with Twin Transfusion Syndrome. Doctors were forced to deliver the babies (Ashlea & Audrey) very prematurely. Weighing less than 500 grams their lives hung in the balance.

“RPA-WHERE ARE THEY NOW” caught up with the girls in 2007 to celebrate their first birthday and learnt the family was doing well, despite some difficulties.

Ashlea has Cerebral Palsy, has developmental delay, is vision impaired and needs a kidney transplant. Audrey is doing well.

Now three and a half, the twins are continuing to thrive with Ashlea soon to join her twin sister at pre-school. The girls enjoy swimming lessons and hanging out with their big sister Emma.

Cameron’s a walking time bomb Out of the blue 29 year old Cameron develops shortness of breath and doctors discover blood clots in both his lungs. If they are not removed he could die. His wife is about to give birth to their second child and now Cameron faces major surgery. Two years later Cameron’s family face another extraordinary challenge.

Debbie’s anguish Thirty-eight year old Debbie is ten weeks pregnant with her first child. What it shows is not what she is expecting. Twelve years on that day still haunts her.

Andrew’s thumb.

Andrew is helping a mate at home when his thumb is jammed in a trapdoor. He is rushed to RPA where doctors try to save his thumb. Nine years on, what happened to Andrew’s thumb.

A first for Les Les is eight-six and he has never had an operation. Doctors have discovered an aneurysm in his aorta in his abdomen and it must be repaired to prevent a catastrophe. Two years on Les lives up to his promise that nothing can slow him down!

Nicki’s trauma Seventeen year old Nicki is rushed to RPA’s Emergency Department after being hit by a car on her way to work. Doctors do their best to try and calm her down while they assess her injuries. Eleven years on, that day haunts her entire family.

Lyndal’s wish Lyndal is a twenty eight year old mum with three small children. She has travelled to RPA from a tiny hamlet in NSW to have a large tumour removed from her brain.

Doctors won’t know how lethal it is until after the operation. All Lyndal wants is to return home to her family.

Nearly three years down the track what has happened to Lyndal.

John’s lip cancer John has a large cancer growing on his lip and Professor Chris O’Brien has to remove a large part of his lip to ensure John survives. After some remarkable reconstruction John emerges from surgery with amazing results. Eight years on John has quite a story to tell.

Dominic’s enormous tonsils Five year old Dominic’s tonsils are as big as walnuts and as a result he keeps his entire household up at night with his snoring. Concerned about his breathing and the effect on his voice, Dominic’s mum is advised it is time to have the enormous troublemakers removed. Two and a half years later, Dominic is fighting fit!
