This week on SMASH, Ivy and Karen jump through hoops for the brilliant but temperamental director Derek Wills as they pursue the role of a lifetime.

Meanwhile, Julia and her husband Frank are frustrated by the red tape of an international adoption process, and Eileen fights to finance her new musical in the midst of an acrimonious divorce.

We open on Karen, a young Broadway hopeful, belting out a beautiful rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” As her voice soars, the sound of a cell phone ringing interrupts and brings Karen back to reality. She’s at an audition, and the director rudely takes a call in the middle of her number. Karen calls her supportive boyfriend Dev to vent about how the audition was a bust. Later, she learns from her agent that she was considered too “girl next door” for the part. Karen voices her continued frustration over not being sexy enough for any roles.

UPDATED. Smash, which Seven have promoted heavily for months, finally airs at 9.30pm Tuesday August 28, after Winners & Losers. The show aired in the US in February and soon after on Foxtel on the now defunct W Channel.

Meanwhile, there are three new episodes of Criminal Minds this week (and looks like four in the following week), as well as new Hung, Covert Affairs and Suits.

The first season of Smash ended last night with an amazing finale. Season 2 is in pre-production and will screen in 2013.
