Now that Ten have confirmed more of their regular timeslots, and Nine their regular Sunday night schedule after the cricket, we get a better picture of what shows will be competing against what for viewers and ratings. All three commercial main channels will be now be offering almost exclusively new content in prime time, while some of the digitals will only add to the number of first run choices viewers will have in coming weeks.

The following programming summary uses week 9 (Feb 13-19) as an example and illustrates the battle royale between the networks for the viewer’s attention as the 2011 ratings war starts to hot up.

The following is a list of new content on commercial channels only, that has not ever been on a free to air channel in Australia before, listed by the timeslot and channel. New content on ABC or SBS not listed here at this stage.

Some of the digital channels have shows that are new to the channel, but they have aired before on other channels – examples include Law & Order and As Time Goes By on GEM. Some 7mate programming has been seen on Pay TV before, but not free to air. Stargate Universe on ELEVEN is another example.

Busiest time slots for new content is 7.30 Sunday, Monday 8.30, Wednesday 8.30 and Thursday 8.30 & 9.30. 7.30 Sunday has 7 new shows on at once, the others 6.

On top of that, there are further timeslots where there are 5 new shows on at once.

Shows marked with * have an encore at a later time, either on the same channel or another within the network (example – first on Nine, encored on GO!). Note that The Biggest Loser encores on Ten will not be ongoing, so therefore have not marked with the *.

Imagine how many more of these shows we could chose to watch if the networks would offer more encores and alternative viewing times. Maybe time to design a 5 tuner PVR…

AIR (Part 3) Season 1, Episode 3

With the air supply failing on the Destiny, a team disembarks to a desert-like planet in search of the mineral needed to scrub the ship’s air of carbon dioxide. After testing nu- merous sand samples without success, and with their window of opportunity closing fast, the group opts to split into two to cover more ground, despite the unbearable heat.

While one team presses on to nd the treas- ured mineral, the other has another goal in mind. When it is apparent that Dr. Rush (ROB- ERT CARLYLE) can’t go on, Lt. Scott (BRIAN J. SMITH) decides to go it alone and orders Sgt. Greer (JAMIL WALKER SMITH) to return to safety with the exhausted scientist.

Meanwhile, with life on the ship looking bleak, and with the aid of the communica- tion stones, Col. Young (LOUIS FERREIRA) reports in to O’Neill, and Chloe (ELYSE LEVESQUE), has one last chance to see her mother.

Like many of these Nine acquisitions, whether they are rushed to air or not will depend on how they perform in the US. THIS HAS BEEN AXED – so if Nine keep the rights, expect it on GO or GEM.

V – US Jan 2011. GO plan to fast track – so possibly on air soon after the US date.

Note: I have not yet included new shows where the Australian network the show is likely to air on is not yet known. These I will add as I find out, and hopefully keep up to date.

Some of these titles include: Lone Star, Running Wild, The Cape, Detroit 1-8-7, Better With You, The Defenders, Outsourced (possibly one for Seven), School Pride, Outlaw, and No Ordinary Family.

If you there is something left out that you know about, or have questions about any of the content, please let us know.

Fast tracking score sheet (0-7 days after US air date):

Australian ratings for 2010 ends November 27. Pretty well everything new, fast tracked or semi fast tracked after that date on the main channels will either go into repeats or disappear until 2011. Therefore, all networks revert to having 0 fast track points after that date with the exception of Survivor and Amazing Race, possibly the Event will continue on Seven due to low ratings.

Ten – 0. Comm Games sees Ten lose their fast track points.
GO! – 2. Hellcats and The Vampire Diaries
Seven - 2. The Event and The Amazing Race S17

Semi-fast tracked (between 7 and 30 days after US air date):

Nine 5 – Survivor Nicaragua, CSI, CSI: Miami, Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory. Note Mentalist now outside what I would consider fast tracked. Also Fringe on GO outside of what I consider fast tracked.
Ten 4 – The Good Wife, Glee, House, NCIS – all starting or back in the week after the Comm Games, from Sunday Oct 17. Note – I won’t count new Simpsons, as it looks like the new ep on Friday Oct 15 is a one off, and not regular programming.
Seven 1 – 30 Rock. Criminal Minds misses out as it is more than 30 days after US air date. Bones now gone into repeats from Nov 14 – so no more points there.

Here I’ll define Fast Tracking as airing within 7 days of US date. I’ll have a second category for semi-fast tracked if shows air between 7 days and 1 month of the US air date. Anything beyond a month I would consider not to be fast tracked. The networks may see it differently, but to me, the less than seven days rules is most appropriate as it means we see an episode of a show before the US sees the next one. Whereas, after 7 days, we end up episodes behind, which means it is easy to see spoilers across the internet.
