Episode 18: Friday, September 21 at 7.00pm In this episode Joel and Nicole and this viewers question – “Where do pop singers and bands find inspiration for their top songs?” It’s been a busy year for Joel and Nicole and they’ve lost their inspiration to keep on keeping on. New Navy have noticed the negativity and send the team on an outdoors adventure. There is nothing better than a spot of hiking and getting back to nature to revive the soul.

Dropping by an art gallery along the way Joel and Nicole come across Mental as Anything, Reg Mombassa.

Reg is known for painting some truly inspired artworks that appear on walls and t-shirts across the globe.

Some canvas and paint can do wonders for opening the windows to the soul.

After some more black diamond urban hiking and the watery views of the harbour, it’s the back lanes of Surry Hills that provide a Tinie surprise. One of the biggest names in the UK music scene, Tinie Tempah, keeps everything his fans send him in a big box to keep his creative fires alight. This must be serendipity.

New Navy revisit and wrap up this episode with a spot of camping to help Joel and Nicole receive true enlightenment. They have opened their eyes, but are they truly inspired?

Episode Eight: Touring – Friday, July 13 at 7.00pm In this episode we take a road trip behind the scenes of the music industry to answer the question “What is touring?” Joel has a terrible case of the man flu and can’t get out of bed so his cousin Joelhan from Germany tags along with Nicole as she answers this question, as well as playing tour guide.

Nicole starts her tour with a visit to Darth Vegas, an uber trendy indie band who tour for more than half the year in their crazy masks. They give Nicole a good starting point on what touring actually is, but Joelhan is more intent on building up his photo collection than listening to the band. Next up is Real Estate who have played their cool music across the globe and are more than happy to share their touring stories.

Nicole continues her cut-rate tour with Joelhan around the city and they bump into Diafrix along the way.

Diafrix are dynamic hip hoppers making a big noise on the Aussie music scene and have even busted rhymes in Parliament House. Will they help Nicole answer this week’s question.

The Kids Wear Crowns have a pop queen confession and Tine Tempah reveals what question puts him in a rage in the No Go Zone.

Episode Six: Career In Dance – Friday, June 29 at 7.00pm In this episode Joel and Nicole take on this viewer’s question – ‘What’s the best way to start a career in music and dance?’ Justice Crew are holding auditions for two extra dancers to join them on an amazing world tour and Joel and Nicole think they could be right for the job. The only problem is Joel has a nasty case of the two left feet.

So off they head to the Village Performing Arts Centre to tap into some learning with Wayne Aspinal before getting a lesson from Timmomatic. He’s a singer and dancer extraordinaire and is a great help.

With their training complete the team head off to the Justice Crew auditions. Will they get the gig and a magical world tour or will Joel’s two left feet take a step in the wrong direction.

Plus You Me at Six drop in for the Confession Session and let loose on their secret musical love, and Heroes for Hire give up their kryptonite.

Episode Five: Do All Bands Get Along? – Friday, June 22 at 7.00pm During this episode, Joel and Nicole answer “Do all bands get along?” First up our hosts chat to the Getaway Plan who hatched a plan to get away from each other after their first album but now they’re back together better than ever. They dish up their personal opinions and suggest Joel and Nicole get some professional help from a head shrink, psychologist Michelle Kam.

Dr Michelle breaks down the theory of group dynamics using Ke$ha, Good Charlotte and Dappled Cities as some interesting examples. Citing references to anthropologist Dian Fossey and her work with gorillas, the head Doc recommends spending some time with a group in their natural habitat to further their insight into group dynamics.

As usual the Stay Tuned team completely misinterpret Dian Fosseys’ advice and monkey around in the studio observing the misinterpreted bonkers band Bluejuice with devastating results.

7:00pm – Friday, June 15 on ABC3

In this week’s episode Joel and Nicole find the answer to “What does it take to write a good song?” Joel has shrunk Nicole’s favourite Cody Simpson shirt, so to make it up to her he decides to write her the ultimate make up song, but where to start.

The hosts head off to triple j and get the lowdown on what makes a good song from Samantha Clode, music editor of the triple j Magazine.

She listens to more tunes in a day than most people do in a lifetime and is happy to share her secrets with our hosts.

They then head to the Australian Institute of Music and talk to electronic song writing legend Endorphin who divulges that song writing is all about finesse and detail. Pat Nellestein provides a more hands-on approach and takes the guitar riff that Joel creates and turns it into a full blown tune. All that’s left are the lyrics.

Walking the streets searching for inspiration, Joel and Nicole meet up with indie band Faker. These guys turn misery into melody and are sure to be able to help with some words of advice.

Also appearing in this show is Dan from dance band Art vs Science and Nathaniel Dean.

During episode three, Magic Flute, Joel and Nicole answer this question – ‘What’s the best way to give a performance?’ They’re excited as they head off to answer this question at the most famous performance space in the world – the Sydney Opera House! However, Joel is convinced that the Sydney Opera House is haunted so he sets out to catch the Phantom of the Opera…House.

Lost in the bowels of this iconic landmark, Joel comes across makeup artist Fiona who works full time at the Opera House and completes more than 12,000 faces of makeup a year. Joel gets the star treatment and leaves with a full face – as the fantasy lead of the Magic Flute, complete with green eyes and feathers.

Meanwhile Nicole talks to the Magic Flute puppeteers about the incredible puppets that are used in the performance as well as the show’s musical performance director Mathew Barclay. Joel also puts a call though to rock band Blue Juice for some tips.

Blues jazz singer, Lanie Lane and chillwave musician Washed Out will also appear in this episode.

Joel and Nicole chat to Australian and international artists and industry experts to discover how to build confidence, what it takes to write a good song, who is the most famous person in the music industry and much more.

The series also gets to the heart of what makes the music industry tick by sneaking viewers into the back door of the music industry; taking them back stage at festivals, clubs, venues, record offices and studios.

Stay Tuned also introduces emerging artists via their own user-generated content in Stay Tuned Presents; musicians share a secret they never thought they’d reveal in Music Confessions; and the question musicians never want to be asked again is shared in No Go Zone.

Viewers can submit their questions by uploading onto the ABC3 website a recording of themselves asking their music-related question. Joel calls Amy Meredith for help: Amy reveals the 4 T’s (Tonsils, Training, Talent and Timing) which Joel and Nicole then set off to discover.

Friday,14 October 2011 In this episode of the show that takes you behind the scenes of the music industry, hosts Joel and Nicole investigate the viewer’s question – how do you get your band signed to a record label.

With a toughie like this one, the hosts head straight to the horse’s mouth, meeting with A&R dude Peter Karpin, who’s responsible for the signing of hit bands like Short Stack, Tim & Jean and Powderfinger. Peter says that it’s important to have a great image, great songs and a certain ‘it’ factor. Furthermore, it’s important for aspiring stars to have a professional attitude towards the business, to be on time and know your stuff.

Nicole spies something in Joel that she thinks might be the ‘it’ factor and her new mission is to turn him into the latest pop sensation. She enlists the help of creative directors, The Squared Division, genuine starmakers who have helped the likes of Ke$ha, Jessica Mauboy and Dannii Minogue all get to where they are today. She then sets up another meeting with A&R guy Peter Karpin to pitch Joel as the next star in the making.

Meanwhile, Good Charlotte guitarist Billy confesses that he LOVES Disney films and knows all the words to the songs from The Little Mermaid and The Lion King while Heroes for Hire vocalist Brand reveals which question he never wants to be asked again.

During episode 11, Joel and Nicole explore Oscar’s question – “How can families make it in a band together without fighting?”.

Joel and Nicole are quick on the job to find out if blood is really thicker than water. The hosts chat with Stonefield, the winners of Triple J’s Unearthed competition, which is made up of four sisters. The rocking gals reveal that working with each other is fun, and the only way to deal with problems is to get over it.

The hosts think that a family band sounds awesome, and they want in. The only way they can join family band Stonefield is to get adopted into the family themselves, but do Stonefield even want them?

During episode ten, our viewer question is from Emily and she wants to know – “What makes a good duet?!” But before they can set out to answer the question they are summoned to the show’s headquarters by the mysterious Stay Tuned Producer. The Producer sets them a challenge – to become the ultimate duet and at 6pm that evening they’ll be facing off in a competition against New South Wales’ mixed doubles ping pong champions.

Joel and Nicole seek advice on how good partnerships work from Jessica Mauboy. She advises Joel and Nicole to trust and support each other in order to form the perfect partnership.

Joel and Nicole then meet Suzie and Justin, a couple of swing dancers who definitely rely on each other’s trust and support in order to nail their moves.

They give the hosts a crash course in swing dance and they begin to feel like they are getting the hang of being a good partnership. But after a brief moment of reflection in the bathroom, Joel’s confidence falters and he fears letting Nicole down…
