It took four trips and 117 days of playing “Survivor,” but “Boston Rob” finally outplayed, outwitted and outlasted everyone. And in the show that aired Sunday night, he was crowned the winner of “Survivor: Redemption Island. He won an additional $100,000 for being voted the fan favourite. But Mariano is no stranger to “Survivor” winnings. His wife, Amber Mariano, also won $1 million on the show, in 2004.
But he did have his doubts when he left the game in Nicaragua. “That final tribal council I had a good feeling, but with everything in ‘Survivor,’ you don’t want to get overconfident,” he said. But Mariano’s did say his experience on the show helped him on his fourth go-round. “I used what I brought to the game from my past experiences, was able to get my foot in the door, and the people were responsive to that,” he said.
Mariano lost to his wife – then fiancée — in the 2004 all-stars game of “Survivor.” They now have two daughters. Asked if Mariano thought the vote would go against him because his wife had already won. Mariano joked, “Listen, I’m glad they haven’t. Because for the past seven years, I’ve had to hear it in my own house, OK? It wasn’t so much about the money. She’s getting the check anyway. But now, I’m at least on a level playing field with my wife when it comes to winners in the ‘Survivor’ household!”
In fact, Mariano said he kept it secret that he was even in the final round. He said, “You know what was great? Was that we finished filming this back in September, and I didn’t tell Amber the end-result. I actually led her to believe that I was voted off at the final four. So it was a great surprise for her last night. And you know, I had to keep it a secret for a long time. But I was happy to be able to do that for her.”

Programming Amendments Update Wednesday April 6, 2011
1. Another Big Bang / Two and a Half Men swap on Nine.
Next Wednesday (April 13) at 9pm on Nine, will be a repeat of Two and a Half Men instead of The Big Bang Theory. Programming for the night now looks like this:
7.30 NEW The Big Bang Theory
8.00 NEW Mike & Molly
8.30 Two and a Half Men
9.00 Two and a Half Men
9.30 NEW RPA: Where Are They Now?
This, of course, is the night of the My Kitchen Rules finale and the Masterchef Media launch in Sydney.
2. Another Survivor Encore late Saturday night.
I don’t know why they don’t just program these in advance – we’re up to the 5th and 6th episode now, so anyone who is going to watch Survivor already is, while anyone who watches it on Tuesday night, doesn’t need to again on Saturday night. The encore will, of course, help anyone who missed out, but if it is programmed in advance, more people may chose to tune in on Saturday night, then some of those may come back to Tuesday night, thereby helping in ratings.
Anyway, this Saturday, April 9, the Survivor Redemption Island encore plays from 11pm.
3. The Big Two and a Half Bang Men Theory on GO!
Yep. Another change relating to these two Chuck Lorre sitcoms – two in the one day!
GO! loses some Big Bang episodes, and gains more Two and a Half Men episodes, while Nine is losing Men for more Bang.
This time, the change is for the 8.30pm Big Bang on Sunday (April 10) night to give way to Charlie Sheen, and the same also for Thursday (April 14) night with that night’s second Big Bang episode also giving way for some more Men. These changes are already in place for the following week.
Go to the TV Guide for GO! for full details.
Programming Amendments Update April 4, 2011
1. Million Dollar Drop on Thursday again.
Nine decides once again to air the Million Dollar Drop this Thursday April 7 as well as Monday. New CSI is out until April 14 (which will mean, that unless Nine play new episodes during Easter non-ratings, there will be another two week gap before new CSI returns on May 5).
2. Tuesday night movie changed on GO!
Tomorrow night – Tuesday April 5 – the movie is now Ocean’s Eleven from 9.30pm. Underworld Evolution is out.
3. Double Survivor continues on GO! next week as well with the TBA on Tuesday April 12 8.30pm being confirmed as another episode of Survivor. That means we will have caught up with the US, as episode 9 that airs on the US April 13 will air here April 19 at 7.30pm.
At this stage, the TBA for 8.30pm Tuesday April 19 remains.
Programming amendments update April 1.
A quiet day for last minute programming changes – just the one from GO! With another Survivor encore on GO!
Episodes 3 and 4 of Survivor Redemption Island will be replayed on GO!, late Saturday night from 11pm. Freddy Vs Jason follows at 1am, while Two Door Mansion is out.
See the TV Guide for GO! for more details.
Thank you, GO for solving a supersized new content conflict tonight.
GO! will be encoring Survivor Redemption Island on Saturday night, from 10.55pm.
The first episode at 7.30 tonight is up against My Kitchen Rules on Seven, New Big Bang Theory on Nine, Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation on Ten, 7.30/Foreign Correspondent on ABC1, Insight on SBS ONE and Homes from Hell on GEM.
At 8.30, the second episode is against new Top Gear on Nine, the Winners & Losers premiere on Seven, NCIS on Ten, Wonders of the Solar System on SBS ONE, How Earth Made Us on ABC1, Degrassi the Next Generation on ABC3, Raising Hope/The Office on ELEVEN and Hoarders on GEM.
That’s a lot of new content on at once. While many of them appeal to very different demographics, the audience will still fragment over the channels as viewers make choices of what to watch, record or possibly leave out.
I have said it before, and will say it again – the main channels will always draw the crowds compared to the digitals. It is crazy to put a high profile show like Survivor in the same timeslot as some of the weeks’ top rating shows on main channels without having an encore later on.
Most of GEM’s prime time new content is repeated later, so it usually doesn’t come into the equation. GO also typically repeats prime time new content later that night as well but, until issuing the Survivor amendment for Saturday night, GO had not yet slated a replay of Survivor Redemption Island.
The die hard Survivor fans will tune in at 7.30 Tuesday – but for many of us already choosing between offerings on the other channels, the encore will be an opportunity to continue our Tuesday routine as it has been while catching Survivor on the weekend – even if it is late night Saturday.
When Nine aired the last series of Survivor, we always chose the weekend encore to avoid working through the conflicts on Tuesday nights.
Despite the number of fans Survivor has, and the constant bombardment of TV forums, blogs, and websites questioning when Nine will air the series, I would be very surprised if more than 250,000 end up watching the show on GO tonight. Even though Nine have promoted on both GO and the main channel, people will still end up watching their usual shows on Tuesday night.
Thank goodness for the encore.
Survivor Redemption Island Tuesdays on GO! at 7.30pm from March 22. Premiere episode is a double.
Encore Saturday March 26, 10.55pm.
Next Tuesday March 22, from 7.30pm, GO! will be airing the first two episodes Survivor Redemption Island – which premiered in the US back on Feb 16.
The double episodes, should they remain in the schedule, should mean we will catch up with the US.
For weeks, fans have been asking Nine when they will air the show, and why they have not been airing Survivor on GO! or even GEM if they could not commit to airing it on Nine.
This means, however, that Hellcats and Pretty Little Liars are now out of the schedule.
Ep 1: You’re Looking at the New Leader of Our Tribe: The 22nd season begins with 18 castaways, including Russell Hantz and “Boston” Rob Mariano, arriving in Nicaragua and learning that ousted players are sent to Redemption Island, where they live in exile and are given a chance to reenter the game if they can defeat other banished players in head-to-head competitions.
Ep 2: You Own My Vote. The first ousted player settles into Redemption Island while others enter into confrontations. A second person is voted out, destined for Redemption Island.
