V

As the US ratings season for 2010/2011 draws to a close, US networks have been announcing the axing of numerous shows.

ABC (US) have axed Brothers and Sisters, which airs on Seven on Monday nights to a rather strong audience for that time. No Ordinary Family has also been given the chop – so far it has aired on Seven for just two weeks.

Not doing well here or in the US is Detroit 1-8-7. Here, Seven have pushed the gritty police series back to 10.30pm Wednesdays.

A show that has been pushed back so far into digital channels and extreme late night timeslots is The Event, from NBC. After failing to attract an audience early on Friday nights, it now airs at 1am Saturday nights on 7mate. The Event has now been axed – hopefully the series will have the chance to conclude, rather than leaving viewers with unanswered questions. And what of The Cape? Treated the same here by 7mate.

Next on the list is V. A series which already had its second season shortened by 3 episodes. At the end of the season, there are still unanswered questions. V aired on Nine, then on GO! who are currently replaying the first series after midnight Wednesday nights.

So far unaired, are Nine network acquisitions Mr Sunshine and Better With You. These two shows are now gone, so the chances are they will end up on GO! or Gem or on Nine during summer, if at all.

US network FOX have axed Lie to Me. On Ten, Lie to Me has been sliding in numbers so far in 2011, but that has not been helped by a raft of timeslot changes and generally inconsistent programming. In the US, falling ratings for its latest season drove the decision not to renew the show.

Other shows axed include Off The Map, Law and Order: Los Angeles, Outsourced and Perfect Couples, while Chuck – one thought definitely gone by a number of sources, will have one more season only.

Just how is 2011 doing so far in TV land? Already – there are flops as well as surprise early season finishes – like Packed to the Rafters on Seven.

Looking at the list of shows for 2011 and their premiere or returning air dates, here are our comments on just how things are going – show by show.

30 Rock – Seven – Thur Feb 3, 11.30pm
Still airing at that time.

60 Minutes – Nine – Sun Feb 13, 7.30pm
Still airing as planned.

6PM With George Negus – Ten – Mon Jan 24, 6.00pm
Still on, despite poor ratings. The 10.30pm encore nearly doubles the exposure of 6PM. The ratings at 6PM are on the way up, sitting around 400,000 at the moment.

American Idol – FOX8 – Thur Jan 20, 7.35pm
Who says Idol needs Simon Cowell to work? Enjoying this season more than many of the previous seasons.

Ben Elton: Live From Planet Earth – Nine – Tue Feb 8, 9.30pm
Flop number 1 for 2011. Poor premiere ratings, followed by even lower subsequent ratings means it only lasted 3 weeks.

Better Homes and Gardens – Seven – Fri Feb 4, 7.30pm
On and rating as well as ever.

Blue Bloods – Ten – Wed Feb 2, 8.30pm
Ten’s first high profile import casualty of 2011. Moved from Wednesday nights to 9.30pm Friday nights, where even less people are watching compared to Wednesdays.

Bob’s Burgers – ELEVEN – Wed Jan 26, 9.30pm
Doing OK for a multi channel and considering the timeslot.

Bondi Rescue – Ten – Sun Feb 6, 8.00pm
On and continues.

Bones – Seven – Mon Jan 31, 8.30pm. Sundays and Mondays 8.30m from Feb 6.
Back to once a week, then Seven caught up with episodes from the US. Rather than being a few days behind and fast tracking as such, Seven have chosen to air repeats, which will most likely remain until after Easter.

Border Security – Sun Feb 6, 7.30pm
Doing well as usual.

Brothers and Sisters – Seven – Mon Jan 31, 9.30pm
Doing OK.

Burn Notice – Ten – Feb or later*
According to TV Week, Ten have no plans to play Burn Notice in the immediate future on either Ten or ELEVEN.

Castle – Seven – Sun Feb 6, 9.30pm
Doing well.

Chuck – FOX8 – Sun Jan 23, 6.30pm
Flopped in that timeslot, although, this season is no where as good as previous ones. They have moved Chuck to Friday nights, and are playing the season from the start again. Assuming no programming changes, first run episodes will air from Friday April 22.

City Homicide – Seven – Wed Feb 2, 9.30pm
Final Wed March 30, 9.30pm.

Cougar Town – Seven – Tue Feb 1, 10.30pm
Still on.

Conviction Kitchen – Seven – Feb 8
Played after Rafters on Tuesday at 9.30 before settling to 8.30pm Mondays where it remains. Should finish Mon April 11 (assumed).

Criminal Minds – Seven – Wed Feb 2, 8.30pm
Now the highest rating import on TV at the moment. A double episode will air Wednesday April 6 (and presumably 13th as well).

CSI – Nine – Thur Feb 3, 8.30pm
Amazingly for Nine, it has stayed in that timeslot. There were two weeks of doubles though in February

CSI: Miami
New episodes air again from March 28, after being in and out of Nine’s schedule a number of times in 2011.

Desperate Housewives – Seven – Thur Feb 3, 9.30pm
Doing fine.

Fat Family Diet – Seven – Mon Jan 31, 10.30pm
Series has finished.

Fringe – GO! – Wed Jan 19, 9.30pm
After GO! Played a double episode recently, Fringe has disappeared from the schedule. GO say they will play them once they have enough episodes built up to go to the season final without a break. Possibly some time in April.

Getaway – Nine – Thur Jan 27, 8.00pm
Still there in its new half hour format.

Glee – Ten – Mon Jan 31, 7.30pm
Last new episode for a while airs March 21. A break in the US means we probably won’t see any new ones until May 2, after Easter non-ratings.

Grey’s Anatomy – Seven – Thur Feb 3, 8.30pm
Doing well.

Hawaii Five-O – Ten – Sun Jan 30, 8.30pm
Doing OK, and picking up 15%-20% more audience on timeshift figures. A double episode back in February didn’t help the audience build.

Home and Away – Seven – Mon Jan 24, 7.00pm
Doing well – reaching over a million on some nights.

House – Ten – Feb – Wed Feb 2, 9.30pm
Moved to Mondays 8.30pm in response to poor ratings of other shows.

How I Met Your Mother – Seven – Thur Feb 3, 7.30pm
The double episodes means we have nearly caught up

Keeping Up With the Joneses – Ten – later in year*
No news on this one.

Law & Order: SVU – Ten Thur Jan 20, 9.30pm
Doing OK.

Lie to Me – Ten – Feb*
Went to Wednesdays at 9.30pm. Last new ep aired Wed March 16. Currently not in the schedule due to comedy specials on Wednesday nights March 23 and 30.

Mike and Molly – Nine – Wed Feb 9, 8.00pm
Also airs on GO now – not performing as well as Nine would have hoped, but still is there in the same timeslot.

Modern Family New – Ten – Sun Jan 30, 7.30pm
Not attracting the number of viewers it used to, bit still doing well.

Murphy’s Law – 7TWO – Wed Feb 2, 9.45pm
Still on.

My Kitchen Rules – Seven – Mon Jan 31, 7.30pm. Continues Tue Feb 1 and Wed Feb 2 at 7.30pm. Airs Mon – Wed – 3 nights a week from then on.
Rating through the roof – so much so that a third series has already been commissioned. MKR alone is causing most of the problems that Nine and Ten have with their 7.30 show ratings Mon-Wed.

NCIS New – Ten – Feb – Tue Feb 1, 8.30pm
Always does well. May pick up more viewers now that Rafters has finished.

NCIS: LA New – Ten – Sun Jan 30, 9.30pm
Ten should play this on Tuesday night after NCIS. NCIS: LA does not do as well as it should, being after Hawaii Five-O.

Nikita – GO! – later in year?
Still no sign of this show.

Packed to the Rafters – Seven – Tue Feb 8, 8.30pm
Finished already (but will be back later). Last new episode aired March 15.

Parenthood – Seven – Tue Feb 1, 8.30pm (double ep, then Tue Feb 8, 9.30pm)
On again, off again, on again. Interruptions to its timeslot with Conviction Kitchen in February, then another next Tuesday March 29 has not helped its figures – which are down on last years’.

Private Practice – Seven – Thur Feb 3, 10.30pm
Still there. Obviously not the same number of viewers as it got at 9.30, but still not bad for its time.

Rescue Special Ops – Nine – later in the year
Possibly to air in May but not confirmed.

RPA: Where Are They Now? – Nine – Wed Feb 9, 9.30pm
Continues as scheduled.

$#*! My Dad Says – Nine – Mon Jan 31, 8.00pm
Flop number 2 from Nine. Out of the schedule already, not even on GO yet.

Sunday Night – Seven – Sun Feb 6, 6.30pm
It’s success so far in 2011 has prompted Nine to put ACA on Sundays as well.

Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation – Ten – Tue Feb 8, 7.30pm
Nowhere near as successful as it used to be. Too many repeats have affected the shows performance this year.

The Amazing Race Australia – Seven – Later in the year*
Most likely to air soon after the conclusion of the US series currently airing on 7mate Sundays at 6.30pm.

The Big Bang Theory New – Nine – Tue Feb 8 and Wed Feb 9, 7.30pm
A stable timeslot would help. New eps have now been on every possible combination of Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

The Biggest Loser Families – Ten – Sun Jan 30, 6.30pm Then Wed-Fri 7.30pm.
Doing better than the previous year.

The Farmer Wants a Wife – Nine – Wed Feb 9. 8.30pm
Series 6 about to conclude. There will be a 7th, applications are open. Ratings so far lower this season than previous ones.

The Force – Seven – Sunday Feb 6, 8.00pm
Still on and doing OK.

The Good Wife – Ten – Thur Jan 20, 8.30pm
Doing OK for its time.

The Mentalist New – Nine – Sunday Feb 13, 8.30pm.
Doing OK, but not as well as previous years.

The Vampire Diaries – GO! – Mon Jan 31, 9.30pm
Has stuck to the same timeslot but is currently off due to a break in the US. Should return April 12.

Top Gear New – Nine – Tue Feb 8, 8.00pm
Now has moved to 8.30pm. Ratings are down on last year.

Two and a Half Men New – Nine – Mondays Jan 31, 7.30pm
Figures are down, but the show remains on Nine, same time for the new episodes, repeats as well. Nine calls a double new episode, a “Two and a Half men Event” – goodness – if that is an event, what would they call the Olympics?

Underbelly – Razor – Nine – later in the year
To come later in the year.

Underbelly Files – Tell Them Lucifer Was Here – Nine – Mon Feb 7, 8.30pm
Underbelly Files – Infiltration – Nine – Mon Feb 14, 8.30pm
Underbelly Files – The Man Who Got Away – Nine – Mon Feb 21, 8.30pm
All have aired, they were also encored on GEM. All did over a million on Nine.

V – GO! – Wed Jan 19, 8.30pm
Final March 23.

Winners and Losers – Seven – Tuesday 8.30pm, from March 22.
About to premiere.

Now that Ten have confirmed more of their regular timeslots, and Nine their regular Sunday night schedule after the cricket, we get a better picture of what shows will be competing against what for viewers and ratings. All three commercial main channels will be now be offering almost exclusively new content in prime time, while some of the digitals will only add to the number of first run choices viewers will have in coming weeks.

The following programming summary uses week 9 (Feb 13-19) as an example and illustrates the battle royale between the networks for the viewer’s attention as the 2011 ratings war starts to hot up.

The following is a list of new content on commercial channels only, that has not ever been on a free to air channel in Australia before, listed by the timeslot and channel. New content on ABC or SBS not listed here at this stage.

Some of the digital channels have shows that are new to the channel, but they have aired before on other channels – examples include Law & Order and As Time Goes By on GEM. Some 7mate programming has been seen on Pay TV before, but not free to air. Stargate Universe on ELEVEN is another example.

Busiest time slots for new content is 7.30 Sunday, Monday 8.30, Wednesday 8.30 and Thursday 8.30 & 9.30. 7.30 Sunday has 7 new shows on at once, the others 6.

On top of that, there are further timeslots where there are 5 new shows on at once.

Shows marked with * have an encore at a later time, either on the same channel or another within the network (example – first on Nine, encored on GO!). Note that The Biggest Loser encores on Ten will not be ongoing, so therefore have not marked with the *.

Imagine how many more of these shows we could chose to watch if the networks would offer more encores and alternative viewing times. Maybe time to design a 5 tuner PVR…

Timeslots and shows will be listed here as confirmed only when made official by the networks.

There will be shows missing from the list, but listing every single show is not the intention! Let us know if there are any you’d like to know about that are not listed.

This post will be updated regularly as information comes to hand.

The mystery as to what will be on GO on the day Eleven launches Tuesday January 11, 2011 has been answered – well at least for now.

GO! Will be hoping that Harry Potter will keep some of the younger viewers from trying out the new channel Eleven.

The first of the Harry Potter movies – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will air from 7.30pm Tue Jan 11, 2011. That will be followed by the movie The Covenant at 10.30.

Good news for Fringe fans – perhaps feeling a little ripped off after GO yoinked this week’s episode out of the schedule at the last minute – Fringe returns to GO at 9.30pm Wed Jan 12, after the premiere of season 2 of V which is at 8.30. Fringe is followed by the movie Elektra at 10.30.

Now that sounds like a good night on GO! Fingers crossed it doesn’t change…

The GO Guide has been updated.

Programming subject to change.

No sign of a TV guide for Eleven yet!

 VS

GO! have released their program guide for the week starting January 9, 2011 that therefore covers January 11, the day of the launch of Ten’s new channel Eleven.

In a schedule that is screaming for amendments as January 11 draws closer, there are large chunks of TBA’s on the night of January 11 and also most of January 12 as well. There are chunks of programming that utilise episodes of The Big Bang Theory and The Middle, while a number of new shows return that week.

On Monday January 10, there will be a new episode of Hellcats at 7.30pm, followed by new Pretty Little Liars. New Hellcats is being promoted on GO now, as is The Vampire Diaries which won’t return until Mon Jan 31 as the next new episode of The Vampire Diaries in not even seen in the US until Jan 27.

On Wednesday January 12, the premiere of season 2 of V comes to GO. It airs at 8.30pm. On Thursday, new The Inbetweeners is scheduled to air at 9pm.

Full details in the GO Guide.

The first TV guide for Eleven is expected to be released close to Christmas. Only then will we have an idea of what will be on Eleven each night, and it will prompt GO to fill in the blanks on their schedule for that week as well as tweak the guide so as to reduce any effect Eleven may have on the GO audience. The demographics of both channels have a huge overlap.

Meanwhile, 7TWO and 7mate schedules for that week (based on highlights anyway) appear much the same as usual. While the launch of Eleven is not likely to affect 7TWO, there may be changes to some 7mate programming to keep viewers on their channel. A possible 7mate Thursday night revamp is likely, with the finale of Stargate Atlantis airing Thur Jan 13.

Updated November 9, 2010

The US ratings season 2010/11 started on Monday Sept 20, 2010.

Here is the Throng guide to what shows are starting when in the US and when they might be likely to be seen in Australia.

The list of shows is presented with the date they premiere or return in the US, followed by if or when we are likely to see them in Australia, in alphabetical order.

30 Rock – US Thur Sept 23. New season on Seven, 10.30pm, Thur Oct 21.

90210 – US Mon Sept 13. Will be shown on Eleven in 2011, but we have a lot of catching up to do.

Grey’s Anatomy - US Thur Sept 23. Seven in 2011. No fast tracking likely.

Undercovers – US Wed Sept 22. Another one part of Nine’s 2010 shows but not known if it will air in 2010 or not. Like many of these Nine acquisitions, whether they are rushed to air or not will depend on how they perform in the US. THIS HAS BEEN AXED – so if Nine keep the rights, expect it on GO or GEM.

V – US Jan 2011. GO plan to fast track – so possibly on air soon after the US date.

Note: I have not yet included new shows where the Australian network the show is likely to air on is not yet known. These I will add as I find out, and hopefully keep up to date.

Some of these titles include: Lone Star, Running Wild, The Cape, Detroit 1-8-7, Better With You, The Defenders, Outsourced (possibly one for Seven), School Pride, Outlaw, and No Ordinary Family.

If you there is something left out that you know about, or have questions about any of the content, please let us know.

Fast tracking score sheet (0-7 days after US air date):

Australian ratings for 2010 ends November 27. Pretty well everything new, fast tracked or semi fast tracked after that date on the main channels will either go into repeats or disappear until 2011. Therefore, all networks revert to having 0 fast track points after that date with the exception of Survivor and Amazing Race, possibly the Event will continue on Seven due to low ratings.

Ten – 0. Comm Games sees Ten lose their fast track points.
GO! – 2. Hellcats and The Vampire Diaries
Seven - 2. The Event and The Amazing Race S17

Semi-fast tracked (between 7 and 30 days after US air date):

Nine 5 – Survivor Nicaragua, CSI, CSI: Miami, Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory. Note Mentalist now outside what I would consider fast tracked. Also Fringe on GO outside of what I consider fast tracked.
Ten 4 – The Good Wife, Glee, House, NCIS – all starting or back in the week after the Comm Games, from Sunday Oct 17. Note – I won’t count new Simpsons, as it looks like the new ep on Friday Oct 15 is a one off, and not regular programming.
Seven 1 – 30 Rock. Criminal Minds misses out as it is more than 30 days after US air date. Bones now gone into repeats from Nov 14 – so no more points there.

Here I’ll define Fast Tracking as airing within 7 days of US date. I’ll have a second category for semi-fast tracked if shows air between 7 days and 1 month of the US air date. Anything beyond a month I would consider not to be fast tracked. The networks may see it differently, but to me, the less than seven days rules is most appropriate as it means we see an episode of a show before the US sees the next one. Whereas, after 7 days, we end up episodes behind, which means it is easy to see spoilers across the internet.

Updated as at Nov 9.

At the end of this week, there will only be 12 weeks left of the ratings year for 2010 – yet Nine still have a list of shows still to come in 2010 that simply will no longer fit in their main channel line up unless they start doing some serious overhauling of the schedule or moving more shows to GO! and the imminent third channel.

I would go as far to say, that a number of these shows simply won’t be seen at all until 2011.

Here is the list, with updated comments.

Shows to come in the remaining 12 weeks of the ratings season on Nine include:

AFP (Australian Federal Police) – Seen in promos, possible late September start.
The Ashes – cricket – Starts November 25, continues through summer.
Australian Masters – Golf – November 11-14
Big – similar to Ten’s Biggest Loser – Will air in 2011.
The Block 2010 – Premieres Wed Sept 22, 7.30pm
The Boss Is Coming to Dinner – Premieres Wed Sept 22, 8.30pm
Cops LAC – premiere September 2, 8.30pm
Nikita – will now be seen on GO late September.
Panic at Rock Island – possibly in October
The Politically Incorrect Parenting Show – possibly in October – a 3 part show.
Random Acts of Kindness – possible in October, maybe in a new timeslot – depends what they do with the Block.
The Real Hustle – Premieres Tuesday Sept 14, 9pm, after Top Gear.
The Secret Millionaire – Currently airing, 9.30pm Mondays. Not a long series though.
Top Gear Australia – launching “with an international event” – Tuesday nights soon.
S***! My Dad Says – comedy – Been promoted, should air soon. Maybe If they got rid of the 7.30pm Two and a Half Mens on Monday and Wednesday they could fit more new shows in.
Survivor: Nicuragua – premieres in US Sept 15. If Nine fast track, possible late September date.
Underbelly Files – 1st of them possibly airs Sunday Sept 19 or 26, 8.30pm
Hey Hey its Saturday – returns to Saturdays from October 16. Final November 27 will be a big party for Nine, as that Hey Hey will be the last show EVER made at the historic GTV-9 Melbourne Studios.

National IQ Test – I left this off the list, but have heard of people being emailed to attend – so maybe possible for November 2010.

The following shows are all possible to air in 2010, but without any promos, its hard to know when or even if they will end up on Nine in 2010:

Chase
The Enforcers
Harry’s Law
Mike and Molly
Mr Sunshine
Undercovers
The Whole Truth
When I Grow Up

And on GO!

Community – Possible for October.
Dark Blue – Already airing, Wednesday nights 9.30pm
Fringe – season 3 fast tracked – Will be on late September. Possibly Sept 21.
Glory Daze – not sure.
The Hard Times of RJ Berger – not sure
Hellcats – Stars Monday Sept 13, 7.30pm.
The Middle – Seeing they have taken this show off again, it is hard to say.
Pretty Little Liars – Definite for late September or October.
Southland – no news
The Vampire Diaries Season 2 – fast tracked
V – season 2 fast tracked – October or later.
Wife Swap – new episodes – possible for October, or even the third channel.
Wipe out – new episodes – already airing.
Human Target – currently airing Wednesday nights.

The woman who played the visitor queen in the original V series has confirmed she will have a role in the reboot’s second season.

Badler will return to the screen as Diana, the same name her original character had, but will play Anna’s mother who has been imprisoned in a Vistor homeworld habitat on one of the V ships.

Nine are busy promoting to the media what to expect to see on their network for the rest of the year – listing shows for both Nine and GO! – who recently on Facebook have been telling everyone that all their recent programming changes have been to make way for “hot new shows”.

Shows to come in the remaining four months of the ratings season on Nine include:

AFP (Australian Federal Police) – locally produced drama
The Ashes – cricket
Australian Masters – Golf
Big – similar to Ten’s Biggest Loser
The Block 2010 – renovation reality competition show, last seen in 2004
The Boss Is Coming to Dinner – the title says it all!
Cops LAC – locally produced drama based on a local police station
Chase
The Enforcers
Harry’s Law
Mike and Molly
Mr Sunshine
Nikita
Panic at Rock Island
The Policially Incorrect Parenting Show
Random Acts of Kindness
The Real Hustle – catching out con artists
The Secret Millionaire
Top Gear Australia – launching “with an international event”
S***! My Dad Says – comedy
Survivor: Nicuragua
Underbelly Files – telemovies
Undercovers
The Whole Truth
When I Grow Up

And on GO!

Community – season 2 fast tracked
Dark Blue
Fringe – season 3 fast tracked
Glory Daze
The Hard Times of RJ Berger
Hellcats
The Middle – season 2 fast tracked
Pretty Little Liars
Southland
The Vampire Diaries Season 2 – fast tracked
V – season 2 fast tracked
Wife Swap – new episodes
Wipe out – new episodes

Notably absent from previous Nine 2010 show promotions include Human Target – which has been promoted on Nine, Money for Jam, What’s Good For You, Flashpoint (why don’t they just put that one on GO!?) and The National IQ Test.

Nine seem to list all of the shows they have available whether they end up on air or not, while Seven keeps things more secretive and Ten tells it as is in the sense where if they say it will be on, it will be.

Meanwhile, RPA returns to Nine 9.30 Wednesdays from August 4 and Hot Property 8pm Wednesday July 28.
