Aussie tennis sensation Bernard Tomic’s gallant loss to world No. 2 Novak Djokovic has ignited the best ever ratings for 7TWO and any digital channel to date.

The average national audience of 718,000 viewers was more than triple that of the same day on Channel 9 last year.

A peak audience of 909,000 tuned in after 10pm AEST to see the Gold Coast teenager go down 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to the Serb.

An average audience of 444,000 stayed up late to watch the remainder of the match on Channel 7 after 11pm.

The next best ratings for 7TWO since launch was the Royal Wedding which garnered an average national audience of 519,000.

In total the telecasts of 7TWO and Channel 7 reached more than 2 million viewers for the Tomic vs Djokovic  match.

Bernard Tomic’s great Wimbledon adventure is over.

Serbian star Novak Djokovic halted the Australian teenager’s life-changing run at the All England Club 6-2 3-6 6-3 7-5 in bright sunshine on Wednesday.

The world No.2 put their friendship to one side to overcome the Australian teenager in two hours and 35 minutes in their quarter-final clash on Court One.

At one set each with a 3-1 lead in the third set, Tomic had Djokovic scrambling for answers before the Serbian pounced on a wayward patch from the Australian.

Nevertheless his efforts in the past week and a half have provided Australia with a burst of sunshine during one of the nation’s darkest hours in men’s tennis.

He was the youngest men’s singles player to reach the final eight since Boris Becker ruled  back in 1986.

And his performance means Australia no longer needs to lean on Lleyton Hewitt’s creaking body for validation on the men’s side.

Let’s not forget that had Tomic not won his second round match against Igor Andreev, Australia’s No1 men’s singles player following Wimbledon would have been Marinko Matosevic.

He turns 26 in August and has recorded only one win on the ATP tour.

Tomic has long been cast as the nation’s great hope and his loss to Djokovic will do little to douse the excitement levels around him.

He exits the All England Club with a ranking in the low 70s, a handy STG137,500 ($A209,571.71) heading towards his bank account and sponsors keen to hitch themselves to his wagon.

His performance and ranking will open doors for him.

If he keeps his head down and remains injury-free, the days of challenger and qualifying events will soon be but a memory for him.

A win over Djokovic was always going to be an almighty task.

The Serb entered the match having won 45 of 46 matches this year, his only loss coming against a red-hot Roger Federer at this month’s French Open semi-finals.

Djokovic has won all four matches against Spanish world No1 Rafael Nadal in 2011, so expecting a kid to topple him was asking a lot.

Update at Ratings

Aussie tennis sensation Bernard Tomic’s stunning surge at Wimbledon continues tonight first up on Court 1 at 10pm AEST against world No.2 Novak Djokovic.

If Tomic, 18, can upset Djokovic, who has lost just once in 2011, he will earn a semi-final meeting with either six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Friday night.

Tomic is the talk of Wimbledon after his ruthless demolition of Robin Soderling and Xavier Malisse in his past two matches – both dismissed in straight sets by the Gold Coast-based teenager.

In Wednesday night’s other quarter final to feature on Seven, local British hope Andy Murray battles it out with Spain’s Feliciano Lopez.

Seven’s coverage will be hosted by Todd Woodbridge with special comments from a team including tennis legend John Newcombe.
