Hosted by the ebullient James O'Loghlin, The New Inventors highlights the brightest new inventions in Australia. Tonight's show features new ideas on how to keep hospital patient records up-to-date, polish stainless steel welding and halve the cost of putting slate tiles on a roof. Plus the history of the Olympic Torch.

Deciding the winner of these three inventions are agricultural scientist Chris Russell, materials engineer Veena Sahajwalla and futurist and author Mark Pesce.

Inventions featured on the program:

Invention 1: THOMM by inventors Richard Kenderes and Andrew James from NSW
One of the surprising danger times for hospital patients occurs when one shift of nurses and doctors hands over to the next. This changeover period is renowned for errors, which are often caused by poor record keeping. THOMM (The Hand Over Management Module) is software that can manage information for every patient in a ward. A handheld organiser allows information to be added at the patient's bedside as decisions are made. The next shift can view information for the entire ward, including priority tasks. Allowing for efficient handovers and well kept records. THOMM - the hand held hospital ward manager.

Invention 2: mepBLITZ by inventor Dean Klower from NSW
mepBLITz is a portable electro polishing system that does true electro polishing. Its inventor, electrician Dean Klower, wanted an easily carried polisher that could be powered by a 240 volt current. He developed a novel liquid cooling system that keeps the electrode from getting too hot, allowing mepBlitz to quickly restore a mirror finish to stainless steel welds without the need for highly toxic chemicals. mepBlitz - portable polishing for stainless steel.

Invention 3: ECOSLATE by inventor Trevor Proctor from NSW
Trevor Proctor loves slate as a roofing material but like most of us has found it too expensive. Wanting to make slate roofing more affordable he developed the Ecoslate Modular Roofing System. He reduced the thickness of the slate and then laminated it to aluminium sheets that are bonded to an extruded closed cell foam. His invention incorporates insulation, uses 50% less slate and can be installed without the need for roof battens. Ecoslate - a slate roof at half the cost.

The New Inventors will be repeated on ABC2 - Friday, August 15 at 4:30pm
