As we all reflect on 2009, the year gone, here’s our Throng voted in our best of 2009 polls.

1st Rush (Ten)
2nd Packed to the Rafters (Seven)
3rd Sea Patrol (Nine)
2. Best Australian Reality Show:
1st Master chef (Ten)
2nd Australian Idol (Ten)
3rd Beauty and the Geek Australia (Seven)
3. Favourite Crime Procedural:

3rd Criminal Minds (Seven)
4. Best Variety / Light Entertainment show:
1st Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation (Ten)
2nd Rove (Ten)
3rd Spicks and Specks (ABC)
5. Favourite Digital Channel.
In fact, this poll has run twice. The results have been the same in both cases:
1st GO
2nd 7TWO
3rd ONE HD
Other poll results in 2009.
41% of those who voted in our Hey Hey poll say they will not be watching Hey Hey when it returns in 2010.
In Australian Idol polls, the first few polls had Scott Newnham in front, with Stan Walker second. It wasn’t long though until Stan Walker was dominating the voting each week as the number of contestants reduced. Stan Walker ultimately received the most votes and his fate was sealed as Australian Idol 2009 on the last show on November 22.
28% were happy to see Rove end his long running talk show in 2009, while 29% considered this very bad news. The rest were not fussed either way.
Finally, one of our biggest polls of the year in terms of votes was when we asked what content you would like to see on Seven’s new digital channel which of course ended up being 7TWO. Throughout the year, once ONE HD and GO had launched, speculation reigned as to what Seven were going to do. Many believed their new channel would be predominantly lifestyle based, while others thought it would be a repository for dumped channel Seven shows like what GO is in some respects for Nine. Then there was the speculation of the name of the channel with trade marks depicting a “channel Mate” logo being registered. Other potential names were 7 Extra, Plus 7 and 7 Plus. Then there was just 72. And, as we now know, it became 7TWO.
Our poll suggested that most people would have like to see a movie channel with a general mix of family entertainment, lifestyle shows and classic Seven shows being the next most preferred choice. The general mix, of course, is what 7TWO became, and it is starting to now do better than GO in ratings.
2009 saw five new free to air channel launched. 2010 should see all three commercial networks launch third channels. Both Ten and Nine have confirmed that a new channel is part of their plan for 2010, with Seven yet to say anything that could be taken as definite. 2010 will also see community television go digital and also become part of FreeView. That is potentially four new digital channels in 2010 for the 5 major cities.
Ten will most likely launch first, then Nine and then Seven last again as they sit back and see what the other two do. I would have thought that the ideal time for Nine to launch a new channel would have been during the Winter Olympics, but then again, that would cause a problem for showing the Olympics in HD. For both Seven and Nine, their new channels will have to be HD, while Ten will keep ONE as the HD channel so their new channel will be a standard definition channel.
Foxtel, however, launched 30 new channels in 2009. Got to be some kind of record!
Happy New Year!
